Seven years ago, The British Fashion Council set out on a mission to make fashion just a little bit more ecofriendly. In order to do so, they established Estethica–an exhibition of innovative designers committed to working sustainably.
After seven years of success at London Fashion Week, Estethica and the BFC have decided to make the eco sustainable design exhibition available to consumers world wide through a collaboration with ecommerce site YOOX.com. To coincide with this week’s London Fashion Week, YOOX created an online retail space specifically for a selection of Estethica designers called Yooxygen. Read more »
Bedbugs Swoosh: The bed bugs are back (were they every really gone?). Their latest victim? The 95,000 square-foot Nike store on 57th Street and Fifth Avenue. While Nike has released a press release addressing the bedbug problem, none of the signs outside let passersby know that the store has been infested with bedbugs. Sneaky. {The Cut}
Taylor Momsen Is on Fire, Literally: Taylor Momsen and her band The Pretty Reckless have released their new video for ‘Makes Me Wanna Die.’ In it, Momsen strips down to her underwear while walking through bits of burning debris and leaping flames. Shocking. {Huffington Post}
Giles Comes To NYFW: Maybe. Following the steps of other UK designers such as Preen and William Tempest, Giles Deacon wants to show his eponymous label in New York next season rather than London. {Fashionologie} Read more »
We love this look–and so do designers. Everyone from Rachel Roy to Matthew Ames to Marc by Marc Jacobs experimented with it. But it’s not the easiest to pull off. How will you style your below-the-knee skirt?
On Tuesday, at around 7pm, I made my way over to Sarah Roosevelt Park in Chinatown for threeASFOUR Spring 2011. I pass this park several times a week. But instead of being full of the usual screaming kids, it seemed to have been transformed into the inside of a space-age museum. In the center of a cement lot–a basketball court?–was a spiral-shaped installation, which served as a backdrop to several projections of some very Warhol-esque movies.
After about twenty minutes of waiting around, the models appeared wearing garment bags. The bottoms were cut out, allowing them to walk. They carefully lined up against the installation and waited for their cue to unzip and remove their garment bags. And voila! With the nod of some girl standing next to me, the clothes were visible, the music began, and the show was well on its way.
As usual, threeASFOUR took an avant-garde route. With embellished bodysuits and a plastic-looking textile draped on some of the models, the pieces seemed like something Lady Gaga might wear if she planned on relaxing on her couch all day. There was very little color variation, as almost every piece was either white, black, or gray. However, that doesn’t mean the collection lacked variety. The different textures, cuts, and draping seemed to make up for the lack of color.
This show was by far the most interesting I’ve seen this week.
Canadian brand Complex Geometries showed their Spring/Summer 2011 collection at Pier 59 Studios on Tuesday, September 14. Click through to see the looks from the show.
Theft At Lincoln Center: Apparently there was a theft during the Michael Kors show on Wednesday. A photographer and his assistant, who were sitting in the photographer’s pit, were robbed of their credit cards, cash, and metro cards. Soon after, Hollister reported a significant spike in sales at their Soho location. We kid. {Styleite}

After the brand’s successful foray into online streaming with its Resort 2011 show, Oscar de la Renta will once again be offering the opportunity to watch their Spring/Summer 2011 show live at 5pm EST with backstage coverage beginning at 4:30pm EST. You can tune in here to Fashionista at 4:30pm to watch the livestream. After the show, there will be special items that can be purchased right off the runway.
The mass of livestreams this and last fashion week foreshadows Lauren Santo Domingo’s online trunk show concept, which will livestream shows and offer items for purchase almost immediately after the models step off the runway. She and her business partner just scored over $1 million from a private equity firm, which is pretty exciting.
McQueen’s Final Collection now in New York: Three pieces from Alexander McQueen’s final collection–his Fall/Winter 2010 collection–have made their way to windows of the late designer’s Meatpacking District store. {Racked}
Lady Gaga and Her Meat Dress: Last night was the MTV’s Video Music Awards. While accepting her award for Video of the Year, Lady Gaga came up on stage sporting a wacky meat dress. She also had a matching clutch and and platform shoes that were actually made of real meat. PETA, where are you? {JustJared}
Rebecca Minkoff Likes Bloggers: Rumi Neely of Fashion Toast was noticeably present at Rebeca Minkoff’s S/S 2011 presentation. However, she wasn’t there observing, she was actually one of the models. {Fashion Indie}
Alex Wang Killed A Cockroach: According to The Cut, Agyness Deyn wasn’t planning on walking any shows this season. However, that all changed at the Coachella Music Festival where Alex Wang saved the day when no one else wanted to kill a pesky cockroach in Deyn’s house. According to a friend, she owed him one and therefor walked his show. {The Cut}
Judith Leiber Shops For Her Own Bags: Judith Leiber–the designer best known for her iconic jeweled up clutches–has opened up The Leiber Museum in the Hamptons. While the museum already has 900 handbags on display, the designer says that is not enough. That’s why she has been searching eBay and other places in order to find the rest of the 3,500 styles she has created. {Wall Street Journal}
Lorick has had my heart since its Spring/Summer 2009 presentation, where models were elegant, beautiful, and refined yet playful as they dug into pastel-colored cakes. It looked like a scene out of Sofia Coppola’s Marie Antoinette, which by the way, happens to be my all time favorite movie. Every season since then, Abigail Lorick –the mastermind behind Lorick–has been producing beautifully tailored pieces as she strives to embody the ‘Lorick Lady,’ a woman who has eternal style while trends come and go.
As I made my way to Tella Design Studio, I imagined what Lorick might have in store for us this season. Named Linear Dawn, this season’s collection consists of subtle simplicity. Of course I expected beautiful clothing but once again, I was taken back by the attention to detail Lorick offers. From afar, the color palette–soft pinks, light blues, and soft grays–looked whimsical. However, once I moved up close it could be seen that the organza, chiffon, and georgette had been all hand-painted with lines and grids, giving life to the name of the collection. There were lovingly-draped dresses, skirts, and head-pieces, which seemed to be made for the models, who looked like they were all planning to go to some modern tea party after the show.
So, even though there was no cake involved this time around, I was pleasantly impressed by the aesthetics. It was everything I expected from the designer. Très bien!
