Everyday Beauty For Everyday Women: Simple Winter Skin Care Solutions

Thursday, Nov 17, 2011 / 10:00 AM

This post was underwritten by by Dove.
We all know skin care is important, but sometimes the enormous selection of beauty products can be a little daunting. And while some expensive creams and serums work wonders, there’s something to be said for the simpler things. Home remedies and uncomplicated products have worked for years, and we know some perfect routines to follow for easy, at-home skin soothers this winter.

1. Use a super food
Avocados aren’t just a tasty and super healthy food; they also have a myriad of beauty benefits. With just one giant avocado, you can improve your skin. Mash one half avocado with a tablespoon of olive oil and slather it on your face. Rinse after 20-30 minutes and revel in how dewy your skin is.

2. Tweak your breakfast
That oatmeal with sliced bananas you had for breakfast is also a recipe for a natural, gentle scrub. Mash up a banana with 1/3 cup dry oatmeal and use a portion to gently exfoliate damp skin. Afterwards, dab the remainder on and let it sit for 20 minutes; it acts as a mask and will tighten up your freshly-scrubbed pores.

3. Don’t neglect your limbs
Sure, your face gets a lot of attention but that doesn’t mean moisturizing isn’t just as important for the rest of your body; your skin is your largest organ, after all. Use the steam from a hot shower as an insulation and slather on your body lotion right after. The lotion will trap the natural moisture, working double time. Just because you’re covered up for winter doesn’t mean your skin goes into hibernation, too.

4. Gentle
Body scrubs, loofahs, exfoliators: They’re around for a reason. Dead cells build up and can leave your skin looking dull. To get your glow back, grab a basic scrub with beads or naturally exfoliating ingredients and give your body a once-over every now and again. Add a moisurizer and go. (Just don’t scrub too hard or too often or you’ll end up with red, irritated skin.)

Daphne Guinness is one of the industry’s favorite eccentrics, known for sporting towering heel-less platforms and skunk hair way before Gaga, and a wardrobe so outrageous it earned its own FIT exhibit. Though her status means she can drop millions on McQueen or use the windows of Barneys as a dressing room, the heiress is actually a little shy. In an unusual burst of publicity, the internet popped out three interviews with Guinness today, including photos of her topless in Interview magazine. Click through to see which items have given her buyers’ remorse, the hazards of trying to be ironic in print, and how current fashion is “feeding on a cadaver:”

From Racked’s Buyer’s Remorse column, where they ask if she regrets any of her thousands of purchases

Daphne:Sometimes I wish I didn’t have so many things because you have to take care of them. And I sort of think one learns from one’s mistakes. So sometimes one’s worst mistakes turn out to be the best things in life. Hmm, buyer’s remorse…I can’t really think of it, I probably have just blanked them…Blue jeans.
Racked: Blue jeans?
Daphne: Yep.
Racked: Any specific pair?
Daphne: Any pair. I don’t really like the color. I like black jeans.

From Interview
On the press

You can’t be ironic in print. Irony doesn’t translate. So the meaning of what you say can be misunderstood…I’ve been really upset sometimes when I’ve been misquoted. And it’s the one thing they use in big print. Or it’s taken out of context. Thoughts are fluid and words are sticky… But sometimes it’s like they try to tie you into knots. That’s why I mostly steer clear of the popular press. I try not to read . . . Well, I never read gossip press. I just read books. And I never switch on the TV any more.

On books

I am reading Nietzsche at the moment. But I’m always reading many books at a time. It might be quite unorthodox, but what I do is, since I’m always surrounded with books, I’ll read a page of physics, and then I’ll read a chapter of a novel that I really love, and then I’ll say, “Oh well, what does that mixture do in my head?”

On fashion trends and history

Fashion is not just about trends. It’s about political history. You can trace it from the ancient Romans to probably until the ’80s, and you can see defining moments that were due either to revolutions or changes in politics… But now we’ve been feeding on a sort of cadaver. At the moment, we’re just endlessly recycling the past.

On fashion today

How do you think the last 10 years will be defined? I can’t think of how…There hasn’t been anything real since grunge. That was the last movement led by music or an art form.

From her NPR profile
About the reasoning behind her FIT exhibit

I don’t tell anybody else what to wear. I would never dream of it. I want [the next generation of designers] not to have to feel that they have to wear this or that in order to be accepted or acceptable.

On growing up as a Guinness

I’ve always been more slight and I’ve always sort of felt that I needed to be protected, especially with so many rowdy brothers and sisters,” she says. “I always wanted to be sort of a knight of the Round Table; it sort of appealed to the idea of [Sir] Gawain and the Green Knight.

My inspiration

When I started getting into nail art, I REALLY got into nail art. Like stayed up until 3am poring over Tumblrs and blogs, eventually landing on archives from the Tokyo Nail Exposition–an annual event in Japan where nail techs turn out mural-like talons and glue anything from pearls and rhinestones to mini plastic Hello Kittys on nails. I decided I, too, needed to have bizarre shapes glued on my fingertips. Flat was not enough. It was time to go 3D.

Envisioning bedazzled, Harajuku-type bows artfully dotted across my nails, I ordered a sets of rhinestones and various colored pearls, flowers and bows, that came with their own bottles of nail glue (which would soon prove my demise).

However, my ambitions were greater than my abilities and the first attempt was a disaster. I kept dropping the tiny rhinestones and underestimated the difficulties of having normal-sized nails as opposed to the acrylic talons seen online. And did you know that nail glue is basically super glue? Dries just as hard and fast. I definitely glued two of my fingers together and ravaged my cuticles trying to unstuck myself (note: if you spill nail glue on yourself DO NOT PICK AT IT. You’ll rip your skin off. Let it sit for a few hours and just keep washing your hands; eventually, it’ll flake off). Defeated, I decided to try again when I was better prepared.

Attempt two was much better, though a learning process:
– First, I polished my nails entirely instead of frantically trying to stick things on before they dried (I used Forever 21′s Summer Salmon and Wet N’ Wild’s basic black for my two-tone look).
– While they dried, I set out the pearls, bows, and flowers for easy access.
– Because my prior battle with the glue frightened me, I decided to try sticking the pearls on with just polish. I used drops of clear coat on top of the base. This was a success, overall. But then there was the giant flower on my thumb. I braved the nail glue again, this time dipping a pin in it and lightly dabbing my nail. Easy does it. Nail glue is not to be messed with. This was also a success. When finished, I covered everything in a thick layer of top coat.

The final result

Now came the challenge of not messing it up. The pearls and bows, by and large, stayed on with just their polish bonder (provided the top coat was thick enough—on nails where I skimped they popped off and I had to re-apply). They don’t stick out too much and are only severed by banging into things (after a rather raucous night out, I only lost 3 pearls. Not too shabby). The giant flowers, however, required reapplication. After a second hefty dose of glue they stayed put, even when washing my hair. I’m usually a little rough on my nails but by paying a little attention the manicure stayed intact. Really, the polish was the big problem—I unwisely used cheapish polish, and that made it fall apart faster. Lesson: when doing a manicure meant to last awhile, choose your polish by longevity, not by color.

Overall, I deemed my DIY 3-D art a success with room for improvement. I learned nail glue is easy to chip off when it’s applied on top of polish and isn’t so scary when you’re careful, so I’ll likely do my next mani with all glue to make it last longer. And once you get used to shapes on your nails, it isn’t so hard to make it last. I can’t say I’ll be fixing cartoon characters to my tips any time soon, but at least I know it’s posible to whip up a stunning display of my own without flying to Japan (or spending tons of money).

The backstage of fashion shows are usually a hot hectic mess. But not Victoria’s Secret. When you have the budget to put on a $12 million runway show, backstage is pretty swank. As in, there was a carving station. And models actually eat from it.

The models wear very short pink silk robes while extensions and hair spray and bronzer and shimmering make up is applied in heaps. But they’re all smiles throughout. These girls are having fun. Our street style photog Ashley was there to capture the magic that is Victoria’s Secret backstage. Highlights included Kanye making an appearance and chatting with Alessandra Ambrosio, and Adriana Lima posing for an impromptu lingerie shoot on top of a table.

Check it out.

1. Can we place bets now that Shannon goes home because she won’t take her clothes off? (again?)

2. Is anyone else reading André’s live tweets? I quote: “Does Jay Emanuel have a special hairspray to keep that hair straight up. It never moves. Top Model creative Wow.” Yes, André. Yes.

3. Have you ever seen anything more appropriate than models posing in a bowl of salad?

4. Is it just me or are those bathing suits really fugly?

5. Has the word “dragalicious” really been uttered twice already? It’s not even halfway through the episode. #WordAbuse

6. How apparent is it that Jay thinks Shannon is full of shit?

7. When you look at Angelea, do you see a young Marisa Berenson? Because I don’t, but André apparently does.

8. What is “vampire vision,” Allison? Do you know you aren’t a real vampire even though you love blood?

9. So are they just not allowed to stray from their “brands” even if they take a good photo? A few episodes ago they yelled at Lisa for only having one look. Pick a story and stick to it, Tyra.

10. Why not? Another choice Tweet from ALT: “@tyrabanks That big Greek salad bowl on beach tonight on ANTM would be a great beach chair, by the pool. Tyra call it back to States, Zonk” ZONK!

The annual Victoria’s Secret fashion show taped last night, and though you’ll have to wait until November 29 to see the Angels walk the runway (as well as Nicki Minaj, Kanye and Jay-Z’s live performances!), you can check out every look from the show right now. We’ve got all the outfits, from Miranda Kerr’s $2.5 million bra to Alessandra Ambrosio’s ballerina shoes to first-time VS walker Karlie Kloss‘ disco-ball butt. Click through our gallery to see the spectacle in its entirety. Which look is your favorite?

Terry Kissing Terry from Terry Richardson on Vimeo.

Last week, Chloe Sevigny’s cover of ‘transversal style’ mag Candy, hit the internet. The cover caused a mini stir as Sevigny was dressed as Terry Richardson (and photographed by Richardson). Richardson just posted his own behind-the-scenes video of the shoot on his blog and… well, this is what apparently went on. Chloe Sevigny, dressed as Terry Richardson, making out with identically dressed real Terry Richardson.

Lie down. Now tell us, how does this make you feel?

Though Hayden Panettiere’s rococo-print Tibi dress was a hit at last night’s MTV Europe Music Awards, her moment was completely interrupted by, oh, just a male streaker running on stage during her presentation for best song. The extremely brave young man didn’t just take a naked lap though; he stood front and center and chatted with a flabbergasted Panettiere, who actually invited him to grab a pint with her after the show (I mean, I would have too…his bod is pretty good, right?). It’s hilarious–don’t you wish things like this happened at American awards shows?

The MTV Europe Music Awards were last night and, to be honest, it was such a spectacle that it’s almost impossible to do a “best dressed” list. Looking through the photos, it seemed most attendants dressed more for a night of raving in some Euro-disco club than a red carpet. There were minor highlights–such as every one of Selena Gomez’ eight outfit changes–but it’s mostly just a parade of insanity.
