Religion has been a theme of many a fashion editorial, but it’s rare that a magazine with as broad a reach as W would publish two similar stories in a three year span. Read more »

It’s the first day of New York Fashion Week! We’re optimistic, wide-eyed, and really looking forward to the rest of the week, even though we know by Monday we’ll be grumpy and our feet will hurt.

Today, though, was a great kick-off to the AW12 season. With shows from Richard Chai to Creatures of the Wind, today was a day for great fashion, and we rubbed elbows (and arm parties) with our favorite fashion friends like Leandra Medine and HONOR designer Giovanna Randall (who happened to be standing next to Shailene Woodley).

Take a look at NYFW from our perspective. We’ll be sharing our photos with you all week!

Mandy Coon has the innate ability to mix things that are cute (bunnies) and things that are badass (leather) with ease. From diaphanous dresses to body-conscious jumpsuits, Mandy Coon knows what a woman wants. The eloquent and meticulously organized Texan invited me into her studio to get a peek at the behind-the-scenes life of her young fashion brand. Let me tell you, it’s quite amazing.

What was the inspiration for you to start your own label?
I always wanted to do it, but I was unsure of myself for a long time. Growing up in Texas being a fashion designer wasn’t a thing you could be. I went to college for computer science, if that gives you any idea. Then I ended up in the fashion industry and knew I wanted to design, but I was kind of unsure of myself, so I went back to school at FIT and learned everything technical I could possibly learn. Afterwards I started working for Camilla Staerk, and I knew I wanted to start my own thing, but I was being hesitant. Camilla was the one who really pushed me to start. She was like, “You’re ready. You’re going to do this.” Her believing in me that much was what pushed me to actually do it.

What moment in your life made you want to go back to school?
I think I was running out of excuses of telling myself why I couldn’t do this. And “I don’t know everything about pattern making,” was the last one. So I went and took all the technical and nerdy classes.

What sort of things inspire your designs?
All kinds of things: Art, music, film, books, people, movies, a lot of animals and biology. It could come from anywhere really. Most seasons it’s like several different things that may not seem to have anything to do with each other, but somehow in my head they do.

What’s a typical workday like for you?
It depends on the time of year, but these days I get up at 7am, have coffee, feed the animals, and take my dog out. I’m usually in the studio at 8:30am and it’s go-time from then on. I have an hour or two to work on drawing or patterns before everyone else gets here, and then it’s a lot of managing. That’s also when the emails start. The workday is a lot of managing and a lot of answering questions. Around 5pm it gets quiet again and I can work on designing.

On a cool-kid block of the Lower East Side is a white shop that is so meticulously orderly, it might make your head spin. Envelope clutches rest upon a white piano. Minimal gold rings sit beside crystals on the countertops. Shoes are perfectly paired on the floor. Of course I’m talking about Assembly New York.

The child of Greg Armas’ love of fashion and art, Assembly New York is an aesthete’s wet dream. Not only is it a clothing store, but it’s also its own label, launching womenswear at fashion week for fall 2012. With his calm demeanor and soft-spoken nature, Greg Armas is the thoughtful brains behind Assembly New York’s success. I sat down with him to discuss his budding business and exactly how he makes it in fashion today.

Fashionista: How did Assembly New York, the store and the brand, come to exist?
Greg Armas: Originally it was a continuation of a store I had in LA, called Scout Los Angeles. October, three years ago, is when I started Assembly NY. It was originally two doors down, and then October of last year we moved into this location, and it really grew into a men’s and women’s store. When Assembly opened it was pretty much for the guys, but then we started getting more and more women coming in and buying the mens stuff, so when we moved we decided to do both.

What inspired your move from LA to New York?
LA has a certain speed, which is great for living, but for work and breaking new ground and getting things done, I felt like I was running through molasses sometimes. At the time, it just seemed like all my direction was to be here. I guess I came here to make it big, like everyone else. [laughs]

Did you have any previous design or business experience before?
No. I mean I owned the store in LA, but I have no particular design knowledge. I do have an art background, I actually had galleries before I opened a fashion store. The design is really new to me. That process was like learning backwards, learning from the clothes. I’m fortunate enough to be able to surround myself with knowledgeable people and assemble a really good team to fill in all the gaps.

Today is the first Friday the 13th of 2012, which if you’re very superstitious, makes today a very ominous day. (Add this traditionally unlucky day to the purported ending of the world in 2012, and you have a panic attack on your hands.)

If you’re going to be superstitious, you might as well look good while doing it, so put away your garlic cloves and old rabbit foot and invest in some of these fashionable items that will bring you luck and ward off evil spirits in the new year.

There’s everything from cross shaped sunglasses (for fending off vampires and/or Twilight fans) to a Wednesday Addams inspired dress that’s just plain adorable.

The past weeks have seen a flurry of SS12 campaigns come pouring in, from Givenchy’s moody beach scenes to Chanel’s acrobats. In the mix, we couldn’t help but notice a few resounding trends, some stranger than others.

On the more expected side of the spectrum are beachy seascapes and smiling models – typical summertime tropes. But more unusual trends are emerging, like models standing around cars. If the auto industry needs a reboot, maybe they should just get Gisele to stand in front of a Chrysler?

Click through our gallery of trends in the spring 2012 campaigns, so far. With ads still to be released from Stella McCartney, Alexander McQueen, and Céline, there are sure to be some more kooky trends, though maybe none as weird as Helena Bonham-Carter’s sickly spots for Marc Jacobs… We’ll just have to wait and find out.

2011 was definitely the year of the model. Models gained influence in pop culture, with new TV shows, documentaries, and larger features in magazines. It looks like editors will have to fight for their right to call themselves the “new models.”

And there were certainly enough big news stories to keep models in the headlines. From Kate Moss’ wedding to Jamie Hince, to a crop of new girls who instantly zoomed to the top, to both Karlie Kloss’ and Andrej Pejic’s topless photos that caused minor scandals, there’s been a lot to talk about in modeling.

We’ve collected the models that created the most industry buzz in 2011, from Moss to Muse. Click through to see them all. Read more »

The street style bubble that started in 2010 has yet to burst, with the personal style industry only growing and gaining influence in 2011.

Street style bigwigs like Anna Dello Russo, Giovanna Battaglia, and Shala Monroque continued their dominion over the internet, but 2011 also introduced the world to a new crop of editors, stylists, and buyers who have envy-inducing style.

The best part is watching someone’s style grow dynamically in front of the lens. These aren’t the girls putting on full looks from the runway, they’re pulling items from their own wardrobes and mixing them with new trends. If there’s anyone to idolize for having great style, we think it’s this new bunch.

Our group includes Julia Sarr-Jamois, the fashion editor at Wonderland, who you may recognize by her amazing hair and round sunglasses, and Kate Foley, a buyer at Opening Ceremony, who’s known for her platform shoes and red lips.
