How I’m Making It: Lori Leven of Love, Adorned

Walking into Love, Adorned, a jewelry and lifestyle shop on Elizabeth Street in New York, is like walking into a wonderland of incredible, unique, and truly lovely items. From selling one-of-a-kind antique jewelry to luxurious candles to handwoven rugs, Love, Adorned almost defies categorization. Just about every New Yorker I know is head over tails for this shop, including myself, so I had to meet the woman behind the magic, Lori Leven.

What I found out was that Lori is just as wonderful and insightful as her store. Immediately I got feeling that Love, Adorned isn’t just her job, it’s her love project. You’ll definitely want to hear how Lori Leven is “making it.

The Best Handbags of Fall 2012

While shoes got a bit tamer for Fall 2012, handbags have only gotten more wild.

Fur and faux furs bags were all the rage at Marc Jacobs, Proenza Schouler, Dries van Noten, and Michael Kors, and while the perspex bags at 3.1 Phillip Lim and the cute minauderies from Diane von Furstenberg may not be totally useful, they sure are cute.

Or course if you need a bag that will actually fit your things inside it, the giant leather carryalls at Alexander Wang might just do the trick.

The Best Shoes of the Fall 2012 Season

We’ve scoured the Fall 2012 collections for the most amazing shoes, and it was easy, because there were plenty. The best part? Footwear options for Fall 2012 are a lot more reasonable than their Spring 2012 counterparts. (Remember those 6 inch Versace lucite wedges?)

Fall 2012 saw lots of wide heels and mary-janes on the runway, and sometimes both simultaneously–like at Prada, Louis Vuitton, and Marni. Knee-high black boots ruled at Alexander Wang, Altuzarra, Givenchy, and Rick Owens, and ladylike pumps could be found at Lanvin, Nina Ricci, and Jil Sander. Of course, if you’re looking for something crazy, look no further than Alexander McQueen’s heel-less fur shoes. Impractical, but so lovely.

Take a look at all the amazing shoes from Fall 2012 and just try to pick a favorite. It’s near impossible.

How I’m Making It: Shane Gabier and Chris Peters of Creatures of the Wind

Shane Gabier and Chris Peters, the designers behind the amazing brand Creatures of the Wind, went from teaching at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago to winning a CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund runner-up award in about seven months. Such groundbreaking recognition is somehwat unheard of in an the fashion industry, though even more groundbreaking might be the fact that this duo’s designs actually live up to the hype surrounding them. They garnered attention for their innovative and meticulously crafted clothes, and have stuck to that vision through ups, downs, and awards.

I met up with the duo on a rainy morning just before Fashion Week to find out how Shane Gabier and Chris Peters manage their high-flying fashion life with their low-key Chicago based existence. It’s pretty unreal.

ThreeAsFour Fall 2012: Going In Circles

ThreeAsFour Fall 2012: Going In Circles

In a time of fast fashion, with trends coming and going in the blink of an eye, it can seem like nothing lasts. ThreeASFOUR’s Fall 2012 collection works to combat that feeling of temporality by touching on lasting themes.

Taking inspiration from eternal and supernatural occurrences, like crop circles and the “end of the world” rumored for 2012, threeASFOUR created a collection based on the shape of a circle. Leather was laser cut into circular fractal patterns and made into elegant headdresses and knee-high boots. Circles made their way onto the clothes as an adornment, like on some mini dresses, or as the shape of the garment itself, like in an architectural cream wrap coat. A favorite piece of mine was a mini dress in a fragmented landscape print, which while resonating with environmentalist and apocalyptic themes, was just plain beautiful.

Lyn Devon Fall 2012: New Yorkers In Love

For Fall 2012, Lyn Devon created a wardrobe for a New Yorker in love, inspired by the classic tear-jerker, Love Story.

The collection provided a ladylike take on menswear inspired items, resulting in subtle darts on a herringbone blazer and a boxy coat in the sweetest shade of pale pink. For the real girly girls there was a graphic “Love Bird” print (lilac and navy birds on white) and angora sweaters in a range of colors.

As I went through the racks of clothes, it left me wondering why Lyn Devon isn’t a bigger hit on the street style circuit.
