Kinky Boots, the Broadway musical with music and lyrics by Cyndi Lauper, is the story of a drag queen and a shoe factory owner who make some fabulous boots together–and learn a few life lessons in the process.

The show is uplifting, and obviously has struck a chord with critics and theater-goers alike, as evidenced by its 13 Tony Award nominations, including one for Best Costume Design. Of course, the costumes, hair, and makeup play a crucial role.

If you thought BB, CC, and DD face creams were confusing, wait until you try to sort through the next generation of so-called “alphabet” products.

According to a recent article in WWD, BB cream sales alone (not counting CC creams) reached $36 million in 2012, up from $2 million in the prior year. That’s 1,800% growth. Last week alone I got samples for three new BB creams, two CC’s, and even one BBB cream. So with the skyrocketing popularity of BB creams (and its other ABC relatives), it’s not that surprising that companies are trying to expand the category beyond skin.

The Great Gatsby Hair Designer on Styling 300 Extras and Staying True to the 1920s

The Great Gatsby finally opened this weekend, and did a pretty boffo box office (although it got some mixed reviews). But no matter what you thought about the film overall, no one can argue it wasn’t visually stunning. The combination of sets, costumes, hair and makeup all made for a gorgeous two and a half hours.

We already spoke in depth with costume and set designer Catherine Martin, but we wanted to hear all about the film’s incredible 1920s hair styles too. Kerry Warn, the film’s hair designer, was on-hand to answer all our burning questions. Read on.
