Dior's Other Creative Force

idtyren2.jpgBasically what John Galliano brought to Dior’s fashion business in terms of genius, color, flair and all-around amazingness, Tyen has brought to the cosmetics side, as its Creative Director since 1980. Just check out those eyes in the picture and the rainbow shot after the jump. Simply incredible.

I’ve always been such a fan of the images created for the brand, and of course the products themselves. But I never new much about the man behind it all until I came upon a profile of Tyen in the latest issue of i-D.

In a nutshell, he obsessed over Vogue while growing up in Vietnam in the ’50s and 60s, moved to Paris at 17, and started doing makeup for the Paris Opera while he was attending Ecole des Beaux Arts. One opportunity led to another and now he’s been at Dior for 30 years.

I’ll let a few of his own quotes give you a taste of what makes him so fabulous after the jump.

Isaac, Ashley & Robin at the 92nd Street Y

92y robin ashley isaac.jpgJoyce Culver, 92nd Street Y“Fashion advertisements are hateful,” said Isaac Mizrahi at tonight’s 92nd Street Y panel discussion on the future of fashion, “but they work.”

Glamour
’s Editor-in-Chief Cindi Leive moderated the talk between The Washington Post’s Robin Givhan, Ashley Olsen and Isaac. The group discussed Michelle Obama, the economy, Ralph Lauren’s ad scandal, fast fashion and the fate of platform heels while Mary-Kate Olsen and Justin Bartha cheered from a few rows back.

Robin and Isaac spent the first ten minutes relishing the First Lady’s effect on the fashion industry. Robin heralded the example she’s setting “for women over thirty with busy careers and families who feel disenfranchised from fashion,” while Isaac finds her balance of mass and high fashion “so inspirational.”

Cindi asked the group why the fashion industry is so hated and Robin brilliantly responded that people have no problem condescending to fashion because it’s a women’s industry.

“No one ever says spending thousands of dollars on season tickets for football is a waste of money, but spending $5000 on a dress…” to which Isaac almost jumped out of his chair in agreement.

“Right on! Misogyny rears its ugly head again!”

Settled & Stuff

trovata forever 21 copies settle.jpgForever 21’s done it again. The mega-chain’s been sued over fifty times for design infringement and yet they still manage to settle out of court.

This time around they’ll be writing a check to Trovata. Forever 21 made almost $600,000 off the striped tees, sweaters and blouses they ripped off down to the last button. Between that and legal fees and other damages we can’t even imagine how much they agreed to pay Trovata to make the brand go away - and keep them quiet.

Aside from the money, the settlement means there won’t be any admittance of wrongdoing, copyright or design infringement. Their first trial ended with seven jurors siding with Trovata and one holding out which we’ll go ahead and interpret our way. Forever 21’s scared to go back to court, given their still technically clean slate, because once they lose a single trial the floodgates are officially open.

So whoever sues them next, don’t settle!

Beauty and the Divas

madonna and lady gaga.jpgSNL’s Deep House Dish may have been creating a mock rivalry between ultimate icon Madonna and current talk-of-every-town GaGa, but the sketch did illustrate that there are a few requirements to being a dominating diva.

Here, four of the key elements that led to these two conquering the charts and the monde of mode:

1. Eschew pants, of course. After dedicating unlimited hours to yoga, Pilates and the Anderson Method, assets must be placed front and center.

2. Become a blonde. Both Gaga (nee Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta) and Madge (born Madonna Louise Veronica Ciccone) ditched their brunette roots years ago.

3. Lash Out. Overdone eyes are de rigueur for aspiring performers. Rumors of Madonna sporting mink lashes by Shu Uemura on her R-Invention tour spawned the company’s new Luxe line, a synthetic version featuring criss-crossed strands for a more dramatic effect. Or try applying the individual Make Up For Ever to create a customized look. And the only-at-Sephora fiber-infused Fiberwig mascara promises fluttering—and lengthened—lashes without the hassle of glue.

4. Bestie up with MJ. Duh.

Confetti for Breakfast at Kenzo

kenzo ss10.jpgI’ve never seen as much gold confetti in my life as I did at this morning’s Kenzo show - not even New Year’s Eve can compare.

It wasn’t totally pointless - it did signal a giant shift in the collection from safari chic to just plain African inspired clothing. Everything was suddenly extra colorful, with shockingly bright pinks and blues and colorful head wraps on the succession of black models.

Post-show, I asked Antonio Marras if he was using his all black line-up to make a statement, especially since diversity in fashion is a forever hot topic, but he attributed it to more creative purposes.

“The idea of the mirage in the desert when you are just beaten by the sun, and then you see these women, all black, in all these colors, and it’s a different feeling, it’s just a like a vision given by the sun.” At least that’s how his assistant translated it, Marras only speaks Italian; but I got the idea he was trying to build some sort of desert hallucination on his Paris runway.

Next time, maybe more focus on the clothes than the setting.

Wandering Aimlessly at Issey Miyake

isseyss10-3.jpgIssey Miyake shows are always theater mashed with fashion.

Last season, it opened and closed with professional martial artists, clad in Miyake’s collection. This time around, the models (with no big names in the bunch) walked all about in different directions through the square space they called a runway—sometimes bumping into each other, which caused more than a few giggles in the crowd.

It was a cool and rather otherworldly show though, with its waning and whining music. At the end, all the girls wandered toward the middle wearing the colorful collection and looking like a school of tropical fish swimming round and round.

The clothes made me think, though, who is the woman who actually wears Miyake? Obviously, there is one since the line’s been around forever. In my imagination she is smart, very well read, definitely artsy (or at least into the arts) and maybe even a full-on scholar. Anyone else care to pontificate on this topic?

This collection was..well, for the Miyake woman. And, whoever she is, I bet she loved it.

Life With Who What Wear!

WWW katharine and hillary.jpgWe’ve interviewed stylists and editors and publicists and designers, but we’ve never entered the world of blogging, or even the internet for a Life With.

So welcome to the world of Who What Wear.

We know you love their site. We love their site. And I made it a priority to sit down with Hillary Kerr and Katherine Power while in LA at the end of July to learn how they left the world of print and moved onto the internet. And more importantly, how they ended up putting together one of the most successful fashion sites among the millions.

Inside, how they blew up, where they’re going and what the launch of their book means
to them.

Notes from St. Trop: Shoe Edition

kjacquessandal.jpgAs a veteran shopper, and of course being in the fashion industry, I had a vague notion of K. Jacques, only because some of my fave retailers—NAP and Matches—carry the shoe, or rather sandal, brand.

But having spent five days in the utterly gorgeous Port Grimaud (about 10 mins from St. Tropez), I can now say unequivocally that in this spot, K. Jacques rules. The line is a mainstay, much like cassis cocktails and Club 55.

A pair of K-Jacques is as important to fashionistas here as Louboutins are to Parisiennes and Nicholas Kirkwoods are to Londoners.

Life With Denise Williamson!

life with denise williamson.jpgDenise Williamson’s been a part of New York’s fashion industry for almost twenty years.

She made it through FIT, worked in house at Calvin Klein, fooled around with showroom ideas, networked her way into one of the most successful PR and branding companies in the city and now runs the showroom, Williamson PR and Williamson Consulting.

Our discussion was meant to revolve around her day to day life, but instead it took a few philosophical turns into the state of the fashion industry and what she sees in the future. Of course, we also talk about her clients, including Trovata, Jen Kao, Kimberly Ovitz, Raf by Raf Simons and Madeleine Thompson, her kid and the fun parts of working so hard.

Streetwalker: An Italian in Paris

italian streetwalker.jpgMariaSole, 22, shopgirl

Got Her: Strolling around the Palais Royal Boutique, taking a breather from work.

Stalked Her: It was girl crush at first sight. I’m obsessed with that blue, especially when it ruffles so perfectly. And once she started talking I wanted to listen to her exquisite accent forever.

Shot Her: Because she’s somehow managed to make DSquared2’s pointy shoulders and her own antique gems look daytime appropriate. Also, it’s really hard to pull off matching so well.

She Said: “Each person has a color that truly represents their soul. I love primary colors a la Castelbeljac and blue is mine! Oh and this jacket is my little mascot for the year.”

We Say:
Can you be our mascot?

Hope for Lacroix?

siritollerodinlacroixfallcouture.jpgThere may be a little life in Lacroix yet.

We’ve all been following the house’s financial woes and many thought the designer’s most recent (and well-received) couture show would indeed be his last. Editors were saddened. Signs were present saying “Lacroix Forever”. Even the models walked for a much-reduced fee.

But reports this morning state that Bernard Krief Consultants have put a bid in for the company, not only as a business decision but because they feel Lacroix is part of France’s cultural heritage.

Our fingers and toes are definitely crossed.

Beauty and the Forever 21 Beast

popbeautyeyecakesstilllife.jpgToday’s WWD reports that Forever 21 will be dipping their toes into the beauty and home markets this year.

This obviously leads us to wonder if beauty companies will soon be faced with the same copycat troubles that have plagued fashion designers. There have recently been lawsuits settled in Europe over the copying of fragrances and their packaging.

And it is in the packaging that we foresee some trouble ahead for the beauty bigs. As with designers, we have even greater concern for the smaller, niche brands who often come up with the cutest and most innovative packaging —and are the most financially affected by knock-offs.

Adventures in Copyright: Leaves from the Same Tree

AICgraphicbcbgf216-30.jpgA reader just sent us an email with the subject line: “Copyright Copycat F21 at it again.”

Boy, was she right.

Usually, in an Adventures in Copyright item, we’ll list one or two things that the copiers did to make it a little less obvious that they’re taking someone else’s design, but, well…if there’s some glaring difference we’re missing, kindly let us know.

The best we’ve got is that Forever 21 has put their dress on a model, and the BCBG is on a mannequin.

And we believe that’s what one would call “blatant”.

Buy Chuck Close’s Kate

chuck close kate moss.jpgEach time I move apartments (and I tend to do this often) I fight the same battle; no one understands why I insist upon moving my magazines.

“Throw them out!” they tell me. “They’re too heavy!” they insist. (Though surely they’d balk at the thought of trashing a single book.) Absolutely not. I love my magazines. And while I can be talked into tossing an issue of GQ with Leonardo DiCaprio on the cover, others, like Andre J’s French Vogue or Coco Rocha’s Numero, will stay with me forever - even if I have to pay the movers extra - because nothing beats a really exceptional magazine.

One of the best that I’ve managed to hang onto dates from 2003 (which means its lived in seven apartments). W dedicated an entire issue to Kate Moss. Inside, various artists including Richard Prince, Lucien Freud, Chuck Close and all the best photographers paid tribute to the supermodel and now, the Chuck Close photographs are going to auction.

The black and white nude is expected to sell for as much as $16,300 at Christie’s on Wednesday which means I’ll have to stay content with flipping through the yellowing pages of my original issue.

A Beauty Wonderland

annehathawayaswhitequeen.jpgThis afternoon the Daily Mail showed us the first pictures of the characters from Tim Burton’s film adaptation of Alice in Wonderland.

And while we feel that Tim’s cycle of remaking a classic in a quirky weird way starring Johnny Depp might be getting a little tired, there’s no arguing that the hair and makeup teams are doing some genius work on this set.

I’m kind of loving Anne Hathaway as the White Queen, perhaps because it’s such a very different Anne than we’re used to seeing. And I forever love a perfect scarlet lip with ultra-pale skin.

But from a beauty standpoint, this look leads us to ask the question: when you go from brunette to blond (a current topic of much discussion here at the office) do you bleach the eyebrows too, or do the more dramatic dark brow/light hair combo?

True Life: I’m A Nail Polish Addict

rescuebeautyglitterpolishes.jpgIt’s true. I can’t stop myself. I love the feeling I get when I glance down and see a flash of cool on my digits.

Abby says she would call for an intervention except that she likes seeing what I show up with every day. (She also just told me about Rescue Beauty Lounge - who make this amazing glitter polish - I might have to go directly after work.)

Currently, I’m rocking a horizontal-striped double-Essie combo (Aruba Blue topped with Bermuda Shorts). I live for the Sally Hansen nail pens, and fully see some lightning bolts in my nail future. I also love vertical stripes and painting each nail a different color.

And I will forever maintain that being the person who comes up with the names of nail polishes is undeniably the most amazing job ever. Reading the label on the bottom of a nail polish bottle brings me endless joy.

Are you as obsessed as I am? What is your go-to nail hue?

Designer Imposters

tresoradwithkatewinslet.jpgThe Trovata v. Forever 21 case may have ended in a mistrial, but it seems the beauty world (in Europe at least) is a step ahead in protecting designer brands.

WWD reports that the European Court of Justice ruled for L’Oreal and against three companies that were knocking perfumes owned by the cosmetics giant, including Trésor, Anaïs-Anaïs and Noa.

Not only had the companies created facsimiles of the scents, but also the bottles and even the outside packaging. Really, does it get more blatant than that?

Obviously, I’m no legal expert and I do realize that there are different trademark laws, etc associated with fragrances as opposed to clothing. But, regardless, it is refreshing to see legal protection being offered to a company whose resources, knowledge, and creativity are the reason the product exists in the first place.

If only we could just throw a little of that legal justice Trovata’s way. Sigh.
