We’re usually drooling over Christian Louboutin’s killer pumps, but the Spring 09 Adona have had our hearts beating fast since we laid eyes on their first incarnation on Phillip Lim’s runway.
Surprising to learn ASOS and Pour La Victoire are also big fans - they’ve gone ahead and knocked off the darling shoe. The Louboutins are going for $1,265 while ASOS black version’s sell for around $45 and Pour La Victoire’s for $225 on Shopbop. With the drastic price cut comes a downsized top ruffle - a shame since the brashness of the original made us love it so much in the first place. It’s like the shoe itself is embarrassed over its identity theft and is trying not to be noticed.

If ASOS stands for As Seen On Stars, Carine Roitfeld’s the newest it-girl.
The British chain’s famous for ripping off the “style” of starlets, aka ripping off the designer clothes and accessories they wear.
We’re used to clicking through cheap versions of Kirsten Dunst’s Marc by Marc favorites or Lindsay Lohan’s Stella tops, but ripping off Carine Roitfeld’s Balmain dress, and doing it so so terribly, is borderline despicable.
They’ve shortened the hem, changed the leopard spots to zebra stripes, and lost the deep red color by using £38.00 fabric.
If you’re of the opinion that rip-offs are ok because one should be able to be stylish without spending obscene amounts of money, we’re going to steer you toward this dress. It looks ten times nicer and has a Balmain vibe without stealing straight from from Christophe Decarnin.
Otherwise, we’re thrilled that even ASOS recognizes Carine’s superstar power.
Fact: Blood is the New Black makes funny shirts.
Fact: ASOS waits until other people make funny shirts, then pounces.
A New Fact (to us, anyway): ASOS will copy any designer, not just the big ones, including this indie brand - as long as a star wears it.
So when a reader sent in that Blood is the New Black’s Blood Gang shirt was copied, we were a little surprised that ASOS even knew BNB, and that some star wore a shirt by them (anybody know who? Our guess goes to Ashton.) It’s also kind of funny that the copy retails for more than quadruple the price of the original.
But here’s another thought - could the actual Bloods gang claim rights to the design? Might be tough to hold up in court…
By now, we’re all well aware that our economy is in the toilet. Well all of us, that is, except for ASOS, who reported a 95% increase in sales this past June. And they aren’t stopping there either. The online store announced plans to beef up their site with, as well as several other minor improvements, a second-hand goods market place for shoppers to buy and trade their vintage and used items.
That’s right, the people who brought you “as seen on stars” want to be your new online vintage boutique. And that’s not all - eventually other small boutiques and labels will be able to upload their products directly onto the site allowing all ASOS customers to purchase their unique duds.
We’re wondering if this means they’ll stop sketching out whatever Miu Miu or YSL Kirsten Dunst sports on the red carpet and start selling the designers’ vintage items for less, because that would be awesome. Either way, ASOS just made digging through a dingy thrift store sound a whole lot more archaic. They could just be our new favorite site.

ASOS has just put up an “in the style of Daisy Lowe” dress, also known as the Miu Miu mini that’s been everywhere recently. The “not-too-dissimilar version” (that’s a round about way of saying knock-off) is available for 38 pounds and comes in black and white.
Besides the fact that this dress is far less cute than the original, we’re wondering why ASOS would try to imitate a dress that was featured in the brand’s spring ad campaign, not to mention in several notable editorials and even some magazine covers already - aren’t they just a little late?
And besides, the silhouette and length don’t work when you take all the costume out and try to make it “wearable”. It’s just not that kind of dress. So why bother?

If there’s any sort of line, any point at which ripping off designers goes too far, ASOS just crossed it.
Right now, their homepage features Carrie Bradshaw’s laptop and her oft-repeated quote, “I like my money right where I can see it, hanging in my closet.” One click and you’re in Carrie’s closet, circa Sex and the City: The Movie, where you can continue to click on a variety of outfits “inspired by” Pat Field’s costumes.
The thing is, when you do that, you’re buying a direct Proenza Schouler runway rip-off, that studded belt, a horrifying copy of the white Ralph Lauren suit, all topped off of course with the Dior gladiators she wears throughout the movie.
The best part though - when you click on the item it says “In the style of Sarah Jessica Parker.” We too can get a bit carried away with characters, (ahem, Gossip Girl), but seriously?
I spent yesterday afternoon daydreaming about that stars and stripes romper from Topshop.
It’s an obvious knock-off of Karl Lagerfeld’s Chanel vision - but at least it’s not as direct a copy as this bag.
Designer Marc B is selling this “Oversized Quilted Chain Clutch” on the British chain site ASOS. The website likes to sell things “in the style of” Lindsay Lohan or Sienna Miller, but it rarely, if ever, rips off something as iconic as the Chanel 2.55 bag.
When we see such blatant rip-offs, we always wonder, who actually buys this stuff when there are a million adorable quilted vintage bags out there for a fraction of the price of this bad copy?
But then again, I’m buying the romper, and I bet Karl would think that’s a pretty bad rip-off…
We’ve had a crush on this top since Chloe Sevigny wore it last September.
It’s flirty without being overtly sexy and would match our whole closet
But it fell off our radar until we noticed this “Eye Print Vest in the style of Chloe Sevigny” on the ASOS website - a British chain that prides itself on selling things “in the style of”. It’s a pretty bad copy considering the factories they have at their fingertips. We thought we could do a better job.
So we ran out and bought the plainest white tank, broke out our trusty sharpies, and got to work. Less than five minutes later we had the perfect eye print vest.
It might not look as fancy as Chloe’s, but it’s a million times cuter than the one at ASOS, less than half the price and lacking those pesky shipping charges.
We think Chloe would be proud.

We loved Marc Jacobs’ flowered swing dress from the Fall ‘07 collection, but so did every other girl:
It was one of the first pieces to sell out of boutiques, despite it’s $400 price tag (which ultimately is what made us cancel our craving - well, that and we saw it on this girl during September Fashion Week and we were like… whatever, anyway).
It seems London shoppers haven’t recovered from the dress either, because (American) reader Jasmine hit us up on Facebook to show us her discovery:
ASOS, the British online retailer whose name stands for As Seen on Stars, has totally knocked it off. For 60 pounds - about $120 - you can get the same pattern as the Marc by Marc frock, but with a cheesy bet, a sloppy hemline, and a neckline lower than Forever 21’s labor standards.
Of course, $120 can also buy you a real Marc by Marc piece onsale at Net-a-Porter… or even two or three Marc by Marc pieces, if you can shove your way into the Barneys Warehouse Sale.
