Things I Learned at DvF

DVFDiane Von Furstenberg and Blake Lively.jpg1. Security guards at the tents are meaner than ever this season.

2. This season’s cadre of Diane admirers included Blake Lively, Tina Brown, Candice Bergen, and every editor on the planet.

3. Diane needs a bigger venue and I have some serious personal space issues.

4. Safari prints and crochet will be worn this spring by many, many twenty-something girls investing in perhaps their first pieces by a proper designer.

5. DvF’s grandkids are ridiculously cute (seated between both their parents) and jumped up to give her a hug and flowers as she made her walk. I am dying to know what they call her, because you know it’s not Grandma.

6. My runway pictures were not so good—get thee to Style.com to see the clothes, but click through to see the models play with their hair for Jeremy.

Fall 2009 New York

Ali Skips the Season, Too

ali michael.jpgThe next Fashion Week rumor will be a good one, we swear,

Because we just got word that Ali Michael’s sitting this one out, too and next to Marc’s cutbacks and Abbey’s knees and Alex’s lack of parties, well, this is just depressing.

Lucky for Ali there’s no surgery on the horizon. In fact, if we had to guess/hope what’ll keep the major model off this season’s runways we’d bet on a cosmetics contract or something equally exciting.

Is it too much to hope she makes a cameo at Luella? Because Ali and Luella go together like peanut butter and marshmallow fluff…

Adventures in Copyright: Buckle Down

jeffrey campbell does marcs boots.jpgThe worst rip-offs are the ones that hit particularly close to home.

Take, for example, these buckled Marc by Marc Jacobs boots. Our good friend developed a not-harmless crush on them after she watched Tanya D and Abbey Lee storm the Fall 08 runway.

But then they cost almost $1000 until she stumbled upon what the Barney’s salesperson told her was the “last pair in the universe” for one third of the original price just a week before Christmas. Of course, the rest is history.

Or was, until she discovered this Jeffrey Campbell copy at Oak. Campbell’s straps are a bit thinner, the toe is pointier and the heel’s not as chunky, but they’re the same and barely $50 less than she paid for Marc’s.

Of course, she also has the thrill of waiting, lusting, craving and finally getting the original - it’s like ice cream and frozen yogurt, no matter how hard you try to convince yourself otherwise, the real thing is always better.

Models

Abbey Lee Out of NYFW

abbey lee kershaw hope youre ok.jpgThose of you already thinking about seeing your favorite models on the runways later this month can count out Abbey Lee, at least for New York Fashion Week, anyway.

The Australian model won’t be able to walk because she’s just had knee surgery and obviously needs to recover before setting foot in any 6-inch platforms.

Abbey had a rough show season for Spring 09, tripping on the Rodarte runway due to ridiculously high shoes, and then fainting and falling the next month at McQueen due to an overly tight corset.

We’re hoping the baby-faced girl gets better in time for the European shows at least - In the meantime, it’ll be interesting to see which models take her slots at the top shows.

Rag & Bone’s Drama

ragandbonestory.jpgHave you guys seen this?

Simon Doonan wrote an entire story for Rag & Bone’s spring collection: A Saga of Hope, Drama, and Miniskirts.

The “saga” features Abby Lee suffering a career crisis in some very cute, very preppy outfits with some very rock ‘n roll makeup by Gucci Westman, (who in case you forgot is married to the David Neville half of Rag & Bone).

Lee considers both physics and sabotage until declaring, “I could just stick with modeling and laugh all the way to the bank.”

Yes Abbey, or you could pair a poison ring with your trench and do both - wouldn’t that be the most fun?

Campaign Roundup: Lily and Natasha Swap Styles!

181.jpg You may have noticed that Whole Foods is (once again) crammed with lithe spirits named Irina, Anabela, and Kinga.

There’s a reason for that and it’s simple: Campaign season is officially here!

If you don’t have time to camp out at Milk Studios all day to watch the girls, here’s a little cheat sheet of what’s happening so far:

Fanorexics will be psyched to hear that Lily Donaldson is now Gucci’s main girl. She’s pairing up with a few backup dancers - including Abbey Lee, the Aussie upstart who got the Gucci exclusive in Milan - for their next big campaign, which is something of a Gypsy-Chic explosion.

But what happened to Gucci’s main face, Natasha Poly?

Funny you should ask - she’s taking the reigns at the Dolce & Gabbana campaign, which Lily D. ruled last season with Gemma and Jessica Stam. Now it’s Natasha, plus Kasia Strauss and maybe Jessica Stam again as the fearsome threesome.

And remember the cute new blonde, Agnete? She’s bumping Kate Bosworth out of her CK Jeans billboard this Fall. Steven Meisel is shooting the full campaign this week, but he’s got a little bit of trouble: They’re trying to book 8 boys and about 16 girls for the ads, but so many girls aren’t in town that the number might have to go down.

Is the New: Models ‘08 and Jenny Humphry

Classof08.jpg

Style.com just came out with their seasonal list of It models. While we definitely concur, we thought we’d share our picks including an AusNTM alum, some relative newcomers, and some faces we’ve all seen for a while now - but that we just don’t think have reached their pinnacle (yet).
