Backstage at VS: Breakfast & Bras

doutzen pull vs09.jpg“Everyone just expects me to jump now. I think they just think I jump naturally, like put me in great shoes and I jump,” said Caroline Trentini backstage at the Victoria’s Secret show this afternoon.

“Will you ever not jump?”

“No! I mean, as long as people ask me to jump, I’ll jump!”

Once I got that all-important question out of the way, I ran around the room and asked a handful of our favorite girls two critical questions:

1. What’d you have for breakfast?
2. What are you wearing to tonight’s after party?

Chanel Iman said she ate eggs, bacon, potatoes, cereal and fruit. I would have said, “Don’t lie,” but I wasn’t in the mood to pick a fight with an angel and she followed with, “I think eating is sexy.” She wants to wear the Valli dress she wore down his runway, but if it doesn’t show up, she’s sure she can find something “super sexy to wear with my fabulous boots.”

Julia Stegner’s wearing Herve Leger, surprise! (There were two camps of girls, the ones wearing Herve and the ones specifically not wearing Herve because everyone else is wearing Herve.) She’s not a breakfast person, but “I had pomegranate seeds this morning! Only because I’m on antibiotics and I have to eat something.”

Alex’ll Have His Cake & Eat It, Too

alex wang wins swiss textile.jpgLast year, Alexander Wang won the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund award and this year he’s won the Swiss Textile award.

The prize, which comes with 100,000 euros (about $150,000) was given to Rodarte last year. The money’s meant to help younger brands develop their international presence though really, aside from the runners up who are given Swiss fabric vouchers, it can be used for anything. The judging panel included Isabel Toledo and i-D’s Ben Reardon.

Alex said, “I’m so honored to take this award…This year has been an amazing year for us as a company and as a family. Taking it forward and growing as a business has helped us realize a lot of things. The monetary component [of this prize] is always a big help, no matter what size business you are. The most important thing is to keep improving what you do and keep on moving forward. [It’s] like the cherry on the cake.”

Is there anything else left for him to win?

We’re On An Online High

ryan korban launch.jpgWe’ve anticipated the launch of two websites this week - one came crashing in and the other’s quietly arrived.

Interior designer Ryan Korban celebrated the debut of RyanKorban.com at the Soho Grand last night with a crush of familiar faces including hosts Alexander Wang, Natasha Poly and Victoria Traina. Korban’s best known for designing Alex’s studio, Tribeca’s Edon Manor and after last night, for gathering more models in one place - Iris, Daiane, Stam, Rose Cordero, Vanessa Traina (semi-model?), Angela Lindvall, Erin Wasson, Natasha - than we’ve seen since fashion week. You can’t actually buy anything on his site, except maybe his services, but just glancing at his portfolio will certainly make you rip your apartment apart in disgust and buy lots of other things. Consider yourself warned.

You can, however, buy plenty from AllSaints.com. The British brand’s been quietly creeping stateside this fall. Their Bloomingdale’s concession launched in August and they have tentative plans to inhabit part of the empty Virgin space in Union Square. But they’ve finally launched an online site for the US full of perfectly rock n’ roll leather, slouchy sweaters and studded accessories. As for their dresses, one of their head designers came from Vivienne Westwood. So again, consider yourself warned.

Quote of the Day

“Barneys has a 400 person-long waiting list for the [new version of the] Rocco bag already. We had three samples when we first came up with it a couple of seasons ago, decided off-hand to send one to Mary-Kate, and it’s just crazy. We had retailers calling about it before it even hit the runway the first time around [for Fall 2009].” —Alexander Wang to Fashionologie on the crazy demand for his Rocco bag. We suggest trying his website on November 1st!

Five Things I Learned From DvF

dvftvu.jpgThanks to the magic of television, I’ve seen Rachel Zoe die after Diane von Furstenberg told her “she’d become the woman she’d always wanted to be,” and watched Whitney Port stare blankly as the fashion icon dished out invaluable career and relationship advice. Now, thanks to Teen Vogue’s Fashion University, I’ve heard DVF for myself.

As the program’s keynote speaker, Diane walked out to so many flashbulbs that she had to tell her overly-eager audience to cut it out and listen. Here are some highlights of her lively, inspirational speech.

1. She takes pride in understanding women. Diane believes that clothes should be like close friends: “When you’re standing in front of the closet in the morning, and you feel like shit, you should go for the reliable one that makes you feel good.”

2. She always has a camera with her. Her close-ups of leaves, bark, or anything else she finds beautiful in nature can end up a pattern in one of her collections.

Online with Alexander Wang

wangresortshoe2.jpgThis fall Alexander Wang’s website did a bit of a soft launch. Much like with everything else the designer does right now, the people wanted more. And come November 1st, they shall receive.

There will be way more e-commerce—so put a sticky note on your computer monitor if you want to get your hands on the latest batch of Rocco Mini Duffels or any of the resort shoes which we’ve got a little preview of. Also on the way is lots of web exclusive merchandise, T by Alexander Wang, and behind-the-scenes videos which are guaranteed to be fun given the lively Wang sensibility.

No guarantees on how long supplies will last but at least you’ve got another venue to go after all the Wang a girl, or boy, could want.

Adventures in Copyright: Corset Clone

bebealexwang.jpgI’m still obsessed with the Alexander Wang corset dress from his pre-fall collection - the one that’s made the rounds from Rihanna to Julia Restoin-Roitfeld, and sold out almost as quickly as the Coco Duffel.

So is Bebe. They’ve created an exact copy of the dress for their upcoming Holiday line.

I spotted this impostor as soon as I opened my November issue of Elle. My heart broke a little bit when I saw this ad sprawled across two whole pages. I know I shouldn’t be surprised, since Bebe’s garnered quite the reputation for their ‘designer-inspired’ clothing, but there is nothing “inspired” about this.

Would You Wear Clogs?

chanel ss10 clogs.jpgIn Vogue’s April issue, Sally Singer hung out with Zoe Kravitz and Olivia Thirlby while they searched high and low for clog boots.

Though no one, from Alex Wang to Opening Ceremony knew what she was talking about, Olivia insisted, “I’m bringing back the clog.”

To which we thought, “No thank you.”

And then of course they stomped their way down Chanel’s runway and forced us to think about them again. So here we are a couple of weeks later, split down the middle. Last night over post-party pizza I told Faran I’d never ever wear clogs. Ever. She gave them a resounding, “Hell yes.” (Though she’s had this debate before.)

Intern Alyssa says no, “They’re ugly and unflattering. Maybe a step up from Crocs,” and intern Kate agrees, “When I was little I had them in lots of different colors to match my outfits. But my mom dressed me, so I had no free will.”

Trendspotting: The Luxurification of Basics

luxurification of basics.jpgThis season’s all about the leather pants - a wonderful change from last season’s wannabe leather liquid leggings - but it looks like next season’ll welcome the leather top.

In New York, Phillip Lim showed leather tanks and tees over slouchy pants and tucked into little skirts. In Paris, Phoebe Philo showed more structured leather tees in both black and brown and Daria Werbowy poured herself into Christophe Decarnin’s studded leather top at Balmain.

I squeezed Frankie’s Alexander Wang look into that graphic because, though there is leather on top, it fits the trend of turning a total basic - t-shirt, sweatshirt, legging - into a luxury item; a successful runway idea that always earns the “comfortable chic” label. But practically speaking, leather tops sound miserably uncomfortable and unflattering unless made out of the absolute best leather.

We’re praying to the high street gods to leave this one alone.

Trendspotting: Head, Shoulders, Knees & Socks

head shoulders knees & socks.jpgWearing socks with sandals is usually listed near the top of any fashion don’t list.

Last fall, everyone welcomed tights with open toes. But it looks like spring’s headed in an even less practical direction pairing socks, whether ankle or knee high, with your favorite sandals. You can do it with platform wedges a la Topshop or Burberry, flats like Marni, shoe booties like Wang and Charles Anastase or studded party shoes like Louise Goldin.

Marc’s fall 06 show was the last time we even considered trying this (though alas, we aren’t Karen Elson), but we’re still not sure about its resurgence for spring.

Would You Wear a Letterman Jacket?

hanne alex wang letterman jacket.jpgOr we should say, will you break out any of your official high school gear just because the runways tell you to?

Even Alexander Wang, god to the too-cool for school crowd, embraced the iconic American jock in his all-American SS10 collection. He sent Hanne down the runway in a letterman inspired jacket, albeit one with a side zipper, v-neck and flattering waistline. Then in London, though Topshop’s Unique collection was pretty scattered, a good portion of it was sporty, including a letterman-like sweater (but with a number) on Anya Kazakova.

I spent my last day in London wandering through Regents Park and up to Camden Market where almost every rack of vintage featured a handful of jackets I last saw in my high school halls (until these recent runways at least) and they’re just as unflattering now as they were then. Which means of course you’d have to buy an Alex Wang one or get yours, or your boyfriends, taken in.

Worth it?

Grown Up Little Girls

natashapolypigtailsprada.jpgSo far my two favorite runway hairstyles take their inspiration from little girls, as far as I can tell. And I mean that in a good way.

Braids and pigtails remind me fondly of my carefree days playing tag and tetherball, and doing penny drops off the monkey bars—with shorts underneath my skirt, of course. (None of us could let the boys peek. And now of course we’re giving up pants altogether. But that’s a whole other matter.)

From the much-beloved Alexander Wang braid to the pigtails yesterday at Prada, elementary school hair is making a comeback. And I like it. A lot.

This isn’t the properly combed look that your mother painstakingly did for every morning. The styles are a little more f***ed up, with teasing, flyaways, and that perfect version of messiness that editorial stylists are so genius at. And of course, a power glossy bright lip wasn’t really in the mix on the playground.

Trendspotting: You Say Gaga, We Say Stella

no pants trendspotting.jpgStella McCartney sent pants-less looks down her runway as early as her Spring 2008 collection (September of 2007, when Gaga was still just a noise babies made). She carried the look through to last spring’s line-up of pants-less suits and rompers, but this season almost every designer jumped on the bandwagon.

Charles Anastase showed a killer nude and black playsuit; Marc layered pants-less options under military jackets; Miuccia showed hotpants in Milan last night; Brian Reyes’ opening look was nothing but a white bodysuit. As if a lack of pants wasn’t enough, Alex Wang sewed sheer panels into his and Jenni Kayne added a matching leather bandeau, conservatively draped with a grandpa cardigan, of course.

But, well, you know which question remains.

The Long and Short of It

twang2001812867_p1_v1_m56577569831772253_254x500.jpgOne thing that I spotted on girls all over NY during Fashion Week that I couldn’t wait to get my hands on was the long-sleeved mini dress. I loved that the simple piece was versatile enough to look striking in both daytime street style shots and each evening’s party pics.

Everywhere I turned, this style seemed to pop up. Hanne Gaby Odiele paired hers with a leather jacket and black booties at the Alexander Wang after-party, and Harley Viera-Newton wore a blue velvet Erin Wasson x RVCA dress to Wasson’s show at the tents.

Possibly the greatest thing about this dress is that there are so many affordable versions of it. The T by Alexander Wang style is on Shopbop for $90, and there is also this Velvet option for $86 that comes in three colors.

If we are in for a few more weeks of warm weather, I can’t wait to wear this dress on its own, but I’m sure it will work just as well with tights and a cozy sweater as soon as the temperature drops.

Would You Bare Your Midriff?

baremidriffgraphic.jpgEach day of NYFW presented more and more examples of belly baring for S/S 2010. From Alex Wang and Brian Reyes to Yigal and Charlotte Ronson, and about a dozen other in between, skinny model tummies were everywhere. And this got me quaking in my booties, no doubt.

First, my midsection is not my favorite area of my body on the best of days. But more importantly, I’m not sure that someone like myself, nearing (gasp!) 34 years of age needs to be baring anything even close to my belly, unless I’m in a beach/pool type setting.

Unless, that is, I suddenly become Gwen Stefani overnight.

Sure, they look cool on the models. What doesn’t? But I don’t think I’ve worn a half shirt since the 80s and I’m thinking I never need to again. I’ll leave it to the rock stars and the supermodels.

What about you?

Good Braid vs. Bad Braid

goodbraidvsbadbraid.jpgThe minute I saw the hair at the Alexander Wang show last week, I was pretty certain it would end up being my favorite, and I was right.

That super long, messy thick side braid was at once totally runway edgy and completely wearable, even if you’re not a supermodel. Though Frankie Rayder was spotted rocking hers at the gas station party later. You know it’s good when the girls don’t want to change after the show. It’s sure to become a major beauty trend and I cannot freaking wait for my hair to be long enough to properly pull this off.

Now let’s take a look at the dark side of the trend, as evidenced by Blake Lively last night at the Emmys. I like to think that, perhaps, she had taken note of the Wang moment and was trying to make it her own, but it was just a massive fail in my opinion. And she could do so much with her amazing head of hair. It was pulled too tight in the front and the braid itself look like a bit of a stiff mess. Plus, everything starts out neat and tidy and then…I just don’t know what happens.

I’ll be sticking with the looser Wang version, for sure.

Shop Talk at MAC & Milk

mac&milkpaneldiscussion.JPGYesterday afternoon MAC’s John Demsey and Milk’s Mazdack Rassi hosted a panel discussion for Parsons and FIT students in the studio that was the site of so many shows this past week.

First, let us just say kudos to the two. MAC & Milk was a huge success in my opinion. It was such a more serene atmosphere than the agita-inducing tents. The staff was incredibly helpful. PR people told us it was drama-free and easy to stage their shows and presentations. There were no nightmarish elevator or temperature situations (two of our big concerns). My only real complaint was the patchy internet service I sometimes got inside on the second floor. A girl’s gotta Tweet!! But all in all, it was a job very, very well done. Let’s do it again in February!

Back to yesterday’s interesting panel, moderated by the hilarious Suzy Menkes and including Rassi, Jack & Lazaro, Humberto Leon and Caral Lim from Opening Ceremony, Parsons Dean of Fashion Simon Collins, and Alexander Wang.
