Alice Roi Goes Pop

alice roi outfit 2.jpgUsually when a designer label hits Canal Street, it’s because of a counterfeit.

Not so with Alice Roi, the New York native whose collections have modest success in Bryant Park, Bloomingdale’s, and Barney’s.

This month, the pretty-edgy designer launches her latest venture, a Canal Street pop-up store with designer Sarah Luna.

Parked on the corner of Essex, the shop stocks Roi’s usual hit list of lacy dresses, collared blouses, and a-line skirts.

It’s open through Saturday from 1-9 pm, which means after you pillage an embroidered cashmere sweater, you can walk to Joe’s Shanghai for the best soup dumplings ever… but not too many, or Alice’s body-hugging velvet clothes won’t fit right.

Streetwalker: Tie After Tie

2182614070_c7f6659ba6_b-1.jpgLaura, 22, Guggenheim staffer

Got Her: At the Louis Vuitton party for Richard Prince’s exhibit closing.

Stalked Her: Actually, yes, we did - we spotted her outfit from three balconies above the Guggenheim floor.

Shot Her: Because her silhouette was sophisticated, but her bow was gutsy. That’s a good combo.

She Says: “Most of my outfit is Alice Roi, but the bow tie is actually from a Mariachi band!”

We Say: Play on!

How Much Money Are You Wearing Today?

money money.jpg

Do you tally the cost of your clothes in your heads?

The fashion boys (and a few girls) on the message boards over at superfuture started posting the total prices of what they’re currently wearing on a thread called “How Much Was Your Outfit Today?”

The responses range from:

“3rd world tailored suit (but 1st world fabric) = ~$1,200
3rd world tailored shirt (again, 1st world fabric) = ~$75
hermes belt = $550
jm weston shoes = $650
j.crew boxers = $10?
really old socks = $0
= $ 2,485 - but i don’t feel guilty because i wear this almost everyday and everything except the boxers and socks are going to last years and years”

to:

“10deep shirt - $10, uniqlo one wash $20, vans chukkas $60. $90 total ..”

This got us thinking.

We’re kind of cheating, because we haven’t left the house today, but we’ve got on dress from Swedish designer Numph bought on sale in London ($40) and gray Gap undies ($5).

That’s only $45, but maybe when we go out later we’ll add blue Marc by Marc flats ($240 at Century 21) and an Alice Roi box purse (sort of free, part of pay after working at the pop-up store) bringing us to a total of $285.

But, how much does your outfit cost today? And was it worth it?

Punk Keeps Going

german youth.jpg
We just arrived in Berlin, where we bump into NYC-based artists on every other street corner. While trying to convince ourselves that Berlin isn’t just another neighborhood in Brooklyn, we stumbled across the charmingly low-tech local label Wasted German Youth.

Their high-contrast shirts and hoodies appear regularly in Berlin fashion glossies. We also see kids sporting them on the street – and if they’re wasting their youth, at least they’re doing it with style and panache.

Wasted German Youth sells at Apartment, one of the coolest boutiques in Berlin, but you can also order their t-shirts the old-fashioned way – by mail. It’s part of their tribute to the early punk rock and hardcore scenes, when kids headed out to the post office to send their xeroxed black and white Zines all over the world.

With Alice Roi looking to the Misfits for inspiration, Marc Jacobs whipping out the Manic Panic, and Giles taking punk rock 10,000 years into the future for fall, we say:

Trip down memory lane!

But what’s so wasted about the modern German youth?

What’s In Your Bag Book: Hilary Alexander

Ever wonder what fashion editors do in the front row? You know, after they pretend not to notice they’re sitting next to Scarlett, discretely deposit the makeup from their goody bags into their actual bags, and focus very hard on their Trio messages?

Fashionista has a lovely window inside the mind of a pro, thanks to the incredible Hilary Alexander. The style editor of the London Telegraph, Hilary may be the UK press’ most public face, and she’s a Kaiser Chiefs fan to boot (which means, of course, we love her).

Check her out with Tom Ford, at right, and then click below to see her musings on Alice Roi’s Fall ‘07 collection…
