photo courtesy WWDI’ve already professed my deep love for all things Australian. Apparently Steven Alan shares my opinion.
He’s currently working on a project with V Australia (that’s Richard Branson’s new airline, not a spin-off of the magazine) where he’s creating the “perfect” travel bag. He just finished traveling around Oz (specifically New South Wales and Queensland) getting inspired.
And he’s Tweeting about it too. No sketches have been released yet, but he has put up some materials he’s thinking about using and color choices like reds, tans, blues, and oranges. If you feel like weighing in, now’s your chance.
The bags will be available exclusively at Steven Alan stores in New York and Los Angeles. If we can get over our jealousy of what sounds like a ridiculously amazing trip, we’re sure we’ll love them.
Last night Aussie sisters Nicky and Simone Zimmermann hosted their resort presentation on the roof of the Empire Hotel.
Nicky told us that she likes to design various patterns and color groups to reflect different moods of the same girl. Our favorite was, somewhat surprisingly, the purple set. It made us feel like we should be lounging poolside in the Hollywood Hills and of course the maxi dresses were an instant favorite.
I love Australia so much. Granted, I haven’t been there since 1996 for my semester abroad. But it still holds a special place in my heart.
In fact, my parents and I have decided my obsession began in childhood with the book Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day, where little Alexander says he’s going to move to Australia when things don’t go his way.
That Oz obsession translated into fashion too. If only I could afford more Colette Dinnigan? Sigh.
If you thought the magazine industry’s problems only existed in the US, here’s some info for your news diet:
Glamour just folded before it could even launch in Australia.
The magazines was licensed from Conde Nast by News Limited (the Rupert Murdoch-owned subsidiary of News Corporation with a big presence in Australia) but has been shut down before their planned March debut issue could start, due to the “downturn in advertising and falling magazine sales.”
Fifteen staffers are affected by this, and the launch is postponed “indefinitely.”
Back on the block and sporting hand-me-downs from NYLON, we bring you another set of bag interrogations.
We stopped a web editor-in-chief while she was making her boutique rounds, another Aussie who takes joy in our economical toil, and the spat-sporting Posso (“P-O-S-S-O”) girls on their vacay from LA (to DJ a Chloe party at that).

PS - We hear Britney was in Soho that day, too bad we didn’t spot her. This could have been her comeback moment!
This week was particularly sweltering in New York City.
But what the street lacks in AC, it makes up for in cute, friendly people who are surprisingly willing to entertain us by letting us search their bags.
No puppies this time - instead, we stopped a Melbourne visitor with a Chloé wallet and a model with some serious Sudoku skills.
Stalked her: Because it’s the first wintery outfit we’ve seen in awhile. We miss black tights!
Shot her: Because with her black patent leather shoes and smart, black plaid mini, this high schooler’s dressed like a quintessential New Yorker. Plus, this is a good lesson that a monochrome outfit doesn’t have to be boring - her shoes and the texture of that dress add just the right amount of interest.
She says: “I just moved from Sydney. It’s only my fifth day in the city!”
Apparently, rumors started that the fashion glossy was folding, but actually, Editor Charlotte Scott and Creative Director Trevor Stones have resigned - but Russh isn’t going anywhere.
Instead, it’s launching a new issue on February 27th.
Whether it can live up to past issue favorites - like their Julia Restoin Roitfeld interview, their Agyness Deyn cover, or the Abbey Lee editorial that lead to her Testino-shot D&G campaign - isn’t something we know… yet…
Vintage has come back into fashion in more ways than one:
We hear on February 8, old-school supermodel Elle MacPherson will hit the catwalk for an Australian round-up show that includes clothes from Josh Goot, Jayson Brundston, Camilla + Marc, and other Aussie labels. The presentation is designed to raise awareness of Australian fashion in the States, and also quite possibly to pave the way for Myer, a massive Oz department store, to open a New York outlet - they’re the party’s biggest sponsor.
Brands like Sass + Bide and Willow come from Sydney and already show in New York, and Australian models like Catherine McNeil and Tiah Eckhart are also big fixtures in the Tents - so it’s nice to see a shipment of fashion mavens from their home country will come support them.
But February 8 is also the night of the Marc show, which means New York’s modelizers will have to make a hard choice: See the spindly nymphs of MJ glory, or “The Body” Elle MacPherson in all of hers…
That rumor we spread about Mark Fast doing a line for Topshop? It's true. And it's in last week's Sunday Telegraph magazine which means it was true before we even said anything and we've had it in our lap since... Read More
