Confessions of a Mark Addict

markrings.jpgI don’t wear tons of jewelry but I do love big rings. I also happen to lose them quite easily, especially the more expensive ones.

Over the past few years I’ve had a couple of rings that without fail get multiple compliments every time I wear them to a fashion event. (Of course the one I loved most, I’ve since lost!)

Editor and stylist friends always ask me what they are and my answer is simply, “Mark” No, not that Marc. But Avon’s Mark. Seriously. They do fun cocktail rings so well and the price (usually around $14) couldn’t be better.

I highly suggest giving them a try. Really who doesn’t love that many compliments? And they certainly won’t set you back financially the way the other Marc does.

We Weren’t Kidding About Fragrance Week

demivcoverofv.jpgOkay, not to beat the dead horse on perfume. But when we read in WWD that both Demi Moore and Fergie are launching fragrances, we must write something.

Let’s start with Fergie. I will fully admit that as much as I wanted to hate Fergie Ferg, The Dutchess had some really catchy ass songs on it. “Big Girls Don’t Cry”, anyone? Do I ever, ever think I want to smell like her? That would be a big old no.

So Avon, I’m not really getting where you’re coming from. Reese, I get. This…not even one little bit. Also, will it have a name as inane and meaningless as Black Eyed Peas lyrics have become? Seriously if there is one called Boom Boom and one called Pow, I can’t be held responsible for my actions.

Smell Like Reese

reese_witherspoon.jpg.jpegReese Witherspoon has joined the ranks of the celebrity perfumer, thank to her relationship with Avon. She’s been an ambassador for the brand for the past two years and will now launch her first fragrance in November, In Bloom by Reese Witherspoon.

We often question how involved these famous people get in the production of the scent that bear their names, but we’re guessing Reese isn’t lying when she talks about her part in the process to WWD.

Her inspirations come from steamy nights in the south, her momma, and lots of white flowers. And even daughter Ava got a say, “I asked her which one smelled the most like me.”

So while some of these collaborations rub our cynical selves the wrong way, this one just doesn’t. It kinda seems like a natural fit and a genuine partnership.

And we’re guessing Jake must have liked it too. Which is pretty much enough reason for us to give it a spritz.

Trend Test: Cream Stick Blushes

NARS CREAM STICK BLUSH.jpgI’ve always been a powder blush kind of girl - creams scare me.

But come summer, I’m loathe to put more powder on my already sweaty face and since there’s been a recent spate of cream stick launches, which are so much more appealing than compact creams, I was willing to try again.

I started out with Avon’s Be Blushed. It has a gel-like consistency and comes in eight different shades. It didn’t take much to blend it in, but once I did it was practically invisible. I had to reapply for even a hint of color and even then there was more pigment on my fingertips than my cheeks.

The next day I tried Bobbi Brown’s Sheer Color Cheek Tint. I loved all six sheer shades, the flush looked natural and stayed on all day though it wasn’t nearly as easy to blend. I had to rub it in so violently that I couldn’t tell whether or not my cheeks were red from the tint or from the rubbing. But once the redness subsided it had the most natural look and feel to it.

Lauren Conrad Launches First Accessory Line for Avon

Lauren Conrad Not since Stella McCartney and LeSportsac teamed up has there been such a “what?!” in the accessories world:

Today, earlier rumors were confirmed that Lauren Conrad will pair with Avon, the makeup brand, to launch a new line of accessories for their youth-geared line, Mark.

These bags (and presumably, these makeup cases) are different from the collection Lauren already designed for Linea Pelle, and aren’t connected to her own fashion line.

They’ll debut to the press in mid-June, so until then, we’ll have to imagine:

Will the bag named after “Lo” be big enough to edge the bag named “Audrina” off the shelf? Is the lone male messenger tote named “Stephen” or “Brody”?

And will People’s Revolution be doing their press?

Stay tuned!

Gucci Gets a Freak

jamesfranco.jpgNo wonder male models have such a hard time.

While high fashion brands eschew the Cocos and the Chanels in lieu of actresses and It girls for their clothing campaigns, designers continue to use models as the face of their fragrances, (most of the time).

But it doesn’t hold true for the boys. Matthew McConaughey struck an awkward pose for Dolce, McDreamy’s doing Avon and WWD guesses Frida Giannini’s already signed James Franco for Gucci.

An interesting choice because:

- We bet most people who shop at Gucci don’t even know the mostly indie actor’s name, even if he was the bad guy in Spiderman.

- We’ll forever picture him circa 2000 in Freaks and Geeks - and we bet Frida hasn’t seen it.

- After seeing a couple of men’s shows in February, we know there are some seriously Gucci-esque male models out there.

But billboards with Franco’s face on them? Well, we’ll never complain.

Patrick Dempsey Likes Avon

patrick dempsey.jpgIs Avon getting to be kind of… cool?

A couple summers ago, they got Derek Jeter to pose glossy headshot style. Then they got Hills idol Lauren Conrad to smile for mark. Then, not even two weeks ago, the beauty monolith announced a limited-edition makeup range with Marimekko.

And now, they’ve snatched Versace frontman and television heartthrob Dr. McDreamy for an as-of-yet unnamed men’s fragrance that launches this November.

We’re pretty sure Dempsey’s wife, Jillian - Avon’s Global Creative Color Director - had something to do with Avon convincing him to pose for a scent - and yet, we can’t help but think that Avon has come a long way since our first memory of the brand from Edward Scissor Hands.

We have a feeling this is going to be the most gifted fragrance among junior high couples come December.

Marimekko to Avon

old marimekko print.jpgIt looks like Marimekko has been up to more than just their collaboration with H&M -

The Finnish company has just announced a collaboration with beauty giant Avon. Marimekko has agreed to license its signature pattern, Unikko, to Avon for the makeup range, which will consist of just four products - an eye shadow, face powder, lip gloss and mascara, in addition to accessories.

We know we’re going to start seeing girls whip out bright pink Marimekko/Avon makeup bags on the subway come October, when the line debuts. But we’re hoping the print isn’t just relegated to cute packaging. We’re hoping Avon takes a cue from our favorite limited edition compact ever, YSL’s Opium palette, and make the actual makeup in the favorite print and colors of Marimekko.

We’re not sure how wearable a bright fuschia and yellow eyeshadow duo would be, but wouldn’t it look so cute on our dresser?
