A Kiss From Chris Benz

chrisbenzlancomephoto copy.jpgWell, not exactly.

But Lancôme is partnering with the darling designer for the next shade in their Pout-à-Porter series. Past collaborations include ones with Behnaz Sarafpour, Thakoon, Proenza Schouler, and Peter Som.

This time around the cosmetics company is giving all you guys a chance to help name the shade (which will be worn by models at Chris’ show in September.)

If you win, you’ll also snag a $500 gift certificate and a bunch of the lipsticks which is a very good thing as all the others have sold out almost immediately. One of the Proenza Pinks even sold for over $120 on eBay!

Just head over to Chris’s Facebook fan page to post your suggestion by 5 pm EST on July 12th.

Mid-Day Snack

brucewillisemmahemingWshoot.jpgDie Hard: Do you think Tallulah’s getting ribbed about these pics over at her Bazaar gig? We’re just super glad that’s not our dad doing all those things because this is definitely more uncomfortable than anything her stepdad has ever Tweeted. {W}

All Tied Up: We’ve been rocking out old school knot bracelets since Memorial Day and plan to all summer long. Behnaz has a different spin. {Elle }

Thank You Selma: Charivari creator Selma Weiser passed away this weekend. We have her to thank for giving Marc his first fashion job and basically reinventing merchandising and retail. {WWD}

This is…Fashionair: Manager and producer Simon Fuller (he of American Idol and Spice Girls fame) is taking his wily media ways to the internet in September by way of a fashion website called Fashionair. Will VB be blogging? {Grazia}

Sophia Kokosalaki Goes Clubbing

sophia aw09 .jpgOn Friday night, I stared at my suitcase trying to figure out what I could wear that would work for a hipster dinner in the 10th arrondissement followed by a black tie event in the 1st. I ended up with a weird mix of Marc Jacobs & Abercrombie - but one of Sophia Kokosalaki’s Fall 09 dresses might have been better.

Last season’s Grecian warrior princess knocked a couple of years off her age, shortened her skirt and threw on a sick jacket - cropped, plated in metals, sequins - that was like fashion armor.

A handful of dresses were constructed from sheer black fabric draped over nude jersey and silk - they reminded me of Alexander Wang. And the beribboned details brought to mind both Behnaz and Nina Ricci. Or it’s just that time of the season where everything starts to look alike.

The sturdy shoes caused a stir in rows one through five and I decided Olga Sherer’s one of my favorite runway models.

Also, Karlie’s deathwalk still makes me giggle.

Trendspotting: Leg-of-Mutton Sleeves

leg of mutton sleeves trend for fall 09.jpgThose Balmain shoulders, the sharp eighties silhouette Christophe Decarnin so successfully reinvented last season, popped up on almost every runway, from Behnaz to Topshop, from Herve to Pringle. But a few designers weren’t satisfied with mere shoulder pads and actually ballooned their silks into real life leg-of-mutton sleeves.

Roksanda Ilincic’s silver, almost angular sleeves added an edge to her glamourous pastel shifts while Dolce & Gabbana’s worked in the opposite direction. Their rounded shoulders gave linear dresses womanly curves.

Julien Macdonald’s steroid sleeves are a bit less dramatic but maintain the bubbly upper arm that skinnies at the elbow - because a sleeve of Dolce’s proportions on Macdonald’s already 80’s-loving, zippered, bedazzled mini might be a bit much.

Trendspotting: There’s a Ribbon on the Runway For Our Love

ribbons at fall 09 fashion week trendspotting trends.jpgCuriously, amid knee-high boots, neon, cut-outs, and body-con dresses, some designers were thinking of present packaging for their Fall 09 designs.

Behnaz Sarafpour, Badgley Mischka, J Mendel and even Christopher Kane worked ribbons into a few of their looks - A touch that seems rather girly for a season that also saw three pairs of actual pants from Marchesa, no?

Trendspotting: Peplums

fall 09 trenspotting peplums behnaz sarafpour chris benz j mendel.jpgThe New York Fall 09 runways saw a curious mishmash of trends - More “downtown” ideas like neon, cut-outs, and what could only be referred to as hooker boots, alongside more “uptown” looks like fur, cascading ribbons, and peplums.

Behnaz Sarafpour, Chris Benz and J Mendel all worked in that last one, which makes us wonder, was Pretty Woman on everybody’s inspiration board this summer?

Way Early at Behnaz; Or, Nobody at Behnaz

behnaz sarafpour fall 09 1.jpgWhen we got to the Behnaz Sarafpour show at Exit Art at 2pm today, we thought it was strange that hardly anyone was there. Slowly, people started to trickle in, but even by 2:30, most of the seats were empty, and it looked like almost everyone had inexplicably blown off the show.

Which is kind of a shame - The clothes, though mostly somber and gray in keeping with the current mood, were invariably covetable, with a few choice little dresses we know everyone will want to wear to the Spring 2010 shows.

But the half-filled venue still bothered us all day. We know there’s a recession, but what was keeping everyone from getting up the West Side Highway? During the Narciso show (more on him later), Fashionologie pointed out that the Behnaz invitation actually said 2:30 (the official show schedule had her at 2pm, and we’re pretty sure that’s what everyone else only pays attention to, too) and so many people likely skipped to head over to Conventry (yes, more soon), thinking they wouldn’t have enough time between the two.

This could definitely be the case for some, though since Coventry was only ten blocks away, we wonder if it’s possible that 40% or so of the seated guests just didn’t come. Luckily for Behnaz, both Julie Gilhart and Meredith Melling-Burke (who ripped her name tag off her seat and stood by the door once she realized how late the show would start - guess she goes by the show schedule, too) were in attendance, and that’s probably all Behnaz needed anyway.

Fall 2009 New York

Is the New: E-vites and Invitations

band of outsiders spring 09 invite.jpgWe used to love comparing all the Fashion Week invitations that come in right before the big Month, but that’s gotten a lot harder this season because of one tiny detail - A lot of designers aren’t sending out invitations in the mail anymore.

So far, Behnaz Sarafpour, Costello Tagliapietra and (our usual invite favorite - at left is their Spring 09) Band of Outsiders have all opted for e-mail only invitations this season, surely a sign of the economic times but also what the upcoming Fashion Week is looking like (fewer parties and cardstock invitations - probably less drink.)

On the bright side, this could be taken as an exercise in green - we’re just waiting for a clever e-vite, and then we’ll believe that’s the case.

Adopt a Designer Ballgown!

payless 027.jpgI’d like to introduce you to some old friends.

I’ve known them for a while, but I still like to go visit them from time to time. They all live together in Soho, and they’re really chic. They only hang out with designers. They used to be on the runway but they haven’t been getting out much lately.

They’re the clothes on the basement sale rack at Kirna Zabete, the pioneering Soho boutique.

Let’s meet them:

There’s the Behnaz Sarafpour dress Natasha Poly wore down the runway in the Spring 2006 collection. Originally, $1645. Now: $412.

The dress Isabeli Fontana wore in the Spring 2005 Behnaz show: originally $1255, now $315.

The Lanvin tulle blouse from Fall 2005 that Ann Catherine Lacroix wore on the runway, marked down from $1665 to $166.

The yellow and white Nina Ricci gown, $5265 to $1317.

And my favorite twins:

The pumpkin colored silk bias cut dresses from Rodarte’s first collection (Spring 2006). Once, $1380, now $345.

There are others (the gaggle of Rick Owens sweaters, the Zac Posen family), but the pieces listed above have the most seniority and are thus closest to my heart. They’re so familiar. They’re always there… like for the last two years.

Why? Keep reading.

Panic! At the Proenza

proenza1.jpgNo doubt you’ve heard the rumors - Proenza Schouler’s Target line is already available on the internet, and all it takes is some savvy clicking to find it…

Well, Fashionista’s done some investigating, and here’s the real deal:

For about four hours yesterday, the Proenza line was available on the Internet, thanks to a handy loop in the web called “Shop Local,” where you can place orders at a specific Target store instead of their national database. Once Target realized that thousands of shoppers were already buying Proenza, they pulled the entire line from the web, and it remains hidden until Thursday, when it will be properly sold on Target.com.

The truly crazed can go to eBay, where some sneaky (unethical? gross?) shoppers are already reselling their ordered goods. Or you can camp out in front of Opening Ceremony in New York City, where the line debuts this Friday morning.

Until then, if you’re really itching to buy some designer Target, here are your options: shop the Behnaz Sarafpour clearance sale on the national website now… or go here and take your chances
