Trendspotting: Bra Tops, Not Just For Oh Henry! Heiresses

bras as tops all over the spring 09 runway.jpgIt’s pretty evident that the 90s have made a come back - we all know about the crop tops, but now we’re seeing its big sister, the bra as top, all over the runway.

But the bra top raises a couple questions, like:

1. Is it a bra - as in, an undergarment made to wear under one’s clothes - or can it actually be considered a top? Cushnie et Ochs certainly thinks the latter, though we wonder what happens in cold rooms or in the rain.

2. Is it really ok to show not just a sliver of your midriff, like with a crop top, but the entire thing?

3. Where exactly is the line between “bra” and “bra top”? Is it in the construction / coverage / use of lace?

I’ve personally attempted this look with a structured bathing suit top, and another time with a cotton bandeau - BUT, only with high waisted pants. However, the runway’s been showing more skin than the new 90210, and, well, unless it’s hiding under a blazer, is anyone really going to have their six-pack hanging out like that? (Do regular girls even have six packs?)

So what’s the verdict: Runway or reality?

At Ben Cho, Make Clothes Not War

2849349060_97fd601ac8.jpgAnd now, a note from Faran…

Ben Cho’s runway was a little more subdued this season - no winking pranks at the end like a knit dress complete with knitting needles and severed hands, etc.

But there were two looks that I couldn’t stop replaying, over and over in my head, and they were similar: Silk sheaths with a long and winding tassel, half unhinging across the shoulder or the bodice, swinging crazy and loose in the light.

It was cute, and it was cool, but there was something more:

I couldn’t get out of my head that the tassels looked like war decorations, the kind captains use to fringe their shoulders; the kind admirals don during weddings, funerals, and Fleet Week.

It was almost as if those uniforms had dissolved, leaving bits left over for a new generation that had never known war, or martial law, or organized and patriotic death. And that future pack of people picked them up off the floor and went, “Oh, these are pretty, let’s put them on our clothes!” Without a care or a reference to rifles in the world.

Will those kind of dresses ever really be in style? Guess we’ll find out in November.

Love you guys.

First Look: Bejamin Cho

ben cho.JPGBen Cho’s show seemed to start extra late, even for Fashion Week. Luckily, we didn’t mind. It gave us plenty of time to scope out the front row which consisted of an unlikely list of young celebs: Run DMC’s two daughters, Lil’ Bow Wow, Cory Kennedy and, not to mention, MK. And we can see why they were all there.

The clothes were an interesting mix of wearable dresses, pants and tops with some innovative details (read: keys adorning sleeves and waistlines) thrown in for good measure - we could totally see MK wearing one of the form fitting black dresses with messy hair, those Balenciaga’s, and her usual quirky aplomb.

Unfortunately, we experienced some technical difficulties with our camera, so along with the pics, we’ll do our best to describe. The first look to come out was all Spring - a rainbow of colors interlacing; almost forming a plaid-like pattern and purple skirt.

The beige dresses were no less interesting - instead of keys, bright blue and dark green chains were affixed in various strategic places. More interlacing beribboned outfits came down, and in accordance with this season’s theme - a sheer white jumpsuit with bright pink underwear on full view. Actually, the whole show stuck to what we’re suspecting to be the it colors of the season: mostly black and white (white on the sheer side) and some shocking pink to really make it Spring.
