Celebrity Child Inspires Adult Clothes Craving

attachment.jpeg A few months ago, we went to the Marc by Marc store on Bleecker St.

“All the Little Marc clothes are on sale,” said the Shop Guy, “and if you pick out the large and extra large sweaters and shirts, they’ll fit you!”

We’ll confess we do this at Gap Kids (in the boys’ section) all the time, but we’d never thought to do it at MJ - despite the fact that fashion editors have bought little boy’s blazers at Ralph Lauren and Hickey Freeman for years.

Now it seems there’s another little kid craze sweeping some fashion women, and it’s all because of Brooklyn Beckham.

The little cutie was photographed with his mom in a Ben Sherman checkered shirt, and we hear that hordes of British birds realized they could buy it, wear it as a three-quarter sleeve blouse, and maintain their status as a secret Posh worshipper.

You can see more photos of Brooklyn on Just Jared ; you can see more plaid shirts at Little Ben (or, we guess, Big Ben).

Such a Little Punk

kids_mainpage.jpgTwo years ago, New York Magazine explored the curious phenomenon of children-as-hipster-accessories.

Among the shocking discoveries - that kids don’t like their parents’ indie rock; that kids don’t like their parents’ wacky haircuts - there was also the notion that kids’ clothing doesn’t translate into the too-cool adult world, especially without an infant line from Urban Outfitters.

Bu all that is about to change, thanks to Ben Sherman.

The British sportswear brand just launched Ben Sherman Kids, a wee line that makes skinny jeans, stovepipe suits, and tons of houndstooth available to first graders.

They probably still won’t like their moms’ Sex Pistols albums, but oh well… the conversion from Spongebob to *Stellastarr has to start somewhere.

Ben Sherman Pairs with British Label PPQ, Clones Lily Allen

Ben Sherman PPQ Dress.JPGIt seems like it’s all about designer collaborations these days. Adidas and Diesel, Stella and Notify, everybody and H&M.

Now Ben Sherman is jumping on the bandwagon, partnering with design and record label PPQ for a diffusion line. Though PPQ isn’t so known in America, they’re like an upscale Heatherette in London - this October, they opened their fashion show with Peaches Geldof and Agyness Deyn (in that order), and the MisShapes played their after party.

The limited-edition collection launches this March with only five dresses, all meant to capsule decades of musical style. The outfits begin with a Mod-inspired shift for the 60’s and end with a high-necked lace frock, which references (they say) the Cranberries, KT Tunstall and other moody songstresses from today.

Ben Sherman is only making 175 of the dresses, and only 25 for the US market. We think this is a cute idea, but something else is bugging us:

If the Indie Dress at left comes in white, it’s going to look a lot like the Chiffon with Velvet Dress from Erin Featherston’s diffusion line. But the Ben Sherman version is £180 - can we still rock out to the Kills if we shop at Target?
