British Vogue Gets To Blogging

VoguecoverNov07_XL_320x421.jpg.jpegAdd another read to your blog roll: Vogue UK is finally in the mix.

We love the site for lots of news coming out of Europe, and of course we’re known fans of what EIC Alexandra Shulman does with the magazine each month. It’s always a great read. They’ve wrangled insiders from their own staff along with others like Savannah Miller to share their insights and favorites.

Magazines, especially the American ones, have been slow to jump onto the internet in an impressive way. But we have high hopes for what the Vogue UK team has to offer. And at the very least we’ll reserve judgment for a bit.

Would You Wear

Would You Wear Sneaker Wedges?

Picture 6.jpgCan you tell we’re in a very shoe state of mind here at the office today? We can’t stop!

While Abby’s contemplating Birks, I’m feeling a very different shoe: the Adidas’ SLVR 106.

The mesh wedge sneaker has been around for a few months and getting a fair amount of attention. Both Queen Michelle of Kingdom of Style and Elizabeth of White Lightning have written them up. But even these two fashion forward ladies are skeptical in their admiration.

Personally, I love them. They’re fun and a nice combination (I think) of my two different favorite shoe looks - sneakers and heels. The wedge is orange, a color I’m loving right now. And it’s 4 1/2 inches high - perfect for a tiny girl like me. Plus (according to the website) they offer support and as some of us have foot problems, support with a heel could be a major plus.

Ed note from Abby: I fear looking like Victoria Beckham throwing out the first pitch of that Dodgers’ game on her show. But I fully support Amanda giving these a go.

For me, Queen Michelle put it best: “it’s OK to not be pretty, dammit!” Pretty can be boring, and safe, and these are, if nothing else, interesting.

So what say you?

Dazed Goes Live

dazed and confused cover with bjork.jpgWe were so busy covering the Fashion Weeks that we totally missed what Dazed Digital was up to.

They’ve launched a series of blogs on their site, featuring Fashion Week guest bloggers (Julia Roitfeld did New York and Marcelo Burlon, editor in chief of Rodeo, did Milan - the Misshapes will handle Paris) alongside the magazine’s own blogging staff, including stylist and Dazed creative director Nicola Formichetti.

Expect live information and exclusive content -

In case you didn’t already have enough to read during Paris.

Who Hearts Bloggers?

vivienne tam invitation fall 09.jpgAt the Rachel Roy presentation last season, we plopped ourselves down on a bench in the lobby of the of IAC building and posted about the show as it was still going on. Some people figured we were blogging, some people probably figured we were on Facebook, and Sessilee Lopez just smiled because she overheard us call her “gorgeous” as we typed.

At the time, it was a little like, “Why are these people on a laptop right now?” but we have a feeling things might be different this season.

Not only is Sony pushing these new blogger-friendly (read: teeny-tiny) laptops via models at the Tents, but at least one designer, Vivienne Tam, is actually welcoming those who work in real time at her show next Wednesday. Hewlett-Packard’s sponsoring live-blogging stations at Vivienne’s presentation on Mercer Street, meaning it’ll be even easier to rip or praise her designs courtesy those HP laptops for which she designed a cover awhile back.

On a side note, Interview blogged a short piece on style bloggers last week, which makes us wonder if “blog” has lost some of that “blah” in fashion.

Diane von Furstenberg, Blogger

diane von furstenberg in black and white.jpgThe people behind DVF have certainly been spending time figuring out how to reach out to the kids lately:

First, they poached Whitney from The Hills to plunk her down into The City. Then, got really savvy with their Facebook, and somewhere in there, they launched a comic book.

Now? DVF.com is launching a blog tomorrow, called Inside DVF, to be part of DVF.com.

The blog will be updated daily and will include news, shots of new items, horoscopes, cultural advice, and personal photos and posts by the Diane herself so you can die of envy over her travels and day-to-day life.

Next? We’re hoping it involves candy.

Colette’s New Outfit

andy warhol banana sweets from colette in paris.jpgWe finally remembered to check out the new Colette site, whose relaunch coincided with the end of the Gap x Colette here in New York, and with the renovation of the Paris store.

It’s kind of the same, but with a lot more components and way more shopping choices (think Lanvin by the loads).

But the best part? They’ve got a stable of blogs, one of which sometimes gives sneaks peeks of upcoming products for sale on the site, like the Andy Warhol Banana Sweets, at left, which we sincerely hope will be available before mid-December.

Because wouldn’t this be the best possible gift for people you don’t know what to get? Yes.

Parental Advisory Warning: Fashion Blogs Will Kill Your Kids

beinspired.jpgThe American media has invented its next villain, and in short, it’s us:

This weekend, the Associated Press launched a story similar to “MySpace and Facebook will sell your children into sex slavery” (remember that one?) claiming young fashion bloggers were at risk for pedophilia, kidnapping, sexual abuse, and also ruining their chances of getting into an Ivy League college - seriously. Our favorite line in the whole story is, “You are what you post online… Is it how you want to be remembered when your tuition scholarship person’s going to review you for Dartmouth?”

That’s actually in the article, and unfortunately not an article appearing in The Onion.

As for the sex abuse and pedophilia of aspiring fashion bloggers, it seems unlikely that a young girl astute enough to self-publish her thoughts about the fashion industry (like Tavi, at left) would also be daft enough to follow some grown guy into a minivan because he promises her a puppy or a new pair of Marc heels.

But we won’t lie - if you’re shipping your 14-year-old kid off to the New Faces board at an agency, she’ll probably be photographed nude, offered drugs, propositioned, and ruined as far as most major churches are concerned.

Though she would have a decent shot to make the tuition money it takes to go to Dartmouth - although if she blogs about her experiences on the runway, she’ll never get in anyway.

Michelle Trachtenberg: Blogger

michelle trachtenberg on set.jpgMichelle Trachtenberg’s newest role as Georgina Sparks on Gossip Girl has her working overtime.

America’s next favorite villainess is also now a blogger for Cosmo’s website.

Her first post is already up, and it’s pretty clear that the space will largely be devoted to rehashing what she wore on set, and, of course, to plugging her own jewelry line, Bella Veritas, which she’ll probably wear on every episode from now on.

We’re kind of hoping she’ll design a poison ring for certain scenes with Blair, but we’ll see.
