Mood Lifter

kimebuzzellitshirtandurbandecay.jpgIt’s a rather gray day here in New York City, and coupled with the fact that I’ve had wicked insomnia all week and that I think I have yet another stress fracture in my right foot, well let’s just say I’m rather cranky.

So when I arrived at the office this morning to find a little bag from Urban Decay with this Kime Buzzelli for Blood Is the New Black t-shirt and Urban’s new holiday palette, my mood brightened.

Urban Decay had Kime, an illustrator and installation artist from the groovy Echo Park neighborhood in LA, to do create the art for their newest product, called the Show Pony Shadow Box after her clothing line and the fashion/art gallery space of the same name. And it turned out amazingly cool. It’s making me relive all the Jem and the Holograms/Jericha/The Misfits fantasies of my youth. Plus, there are two new shadow shades exclusive to this palette and they’re named “Snatch” and “Painkiller”. Awesome.

So, thanks Urban Decay for making me less bitchy this morning and giving me some pretty new eye shadow to wear.

Adventures in Copyright: Tribute or Trouble?

rip ysl tee.jpgWhen I interned for a British designer my senior year of college, we planned a major, major, party.

The ridiculously gorgeous event planner showed up wearing a gray YSL sweatshirt with a giant navy blue logo - it was the one time wearing a logo appealed to me.

There’s something so iconic and almost graceful about the YSL logo but there’s something morbid about this t-shirt designed by artist Brian Lichtenberg. It sells on Blood is the New Black - or it did before it sold out.

Lichtenberg’s woven his own RIP label to mirror Yves’ and done both a black on white and white on black version. We get that it’s in tribute to the man but the tribute lacks taste.

Does it sit well with you? And more importantly, would you actually wear it?

Adventures in Copyrights: Blood is Thicker than Water

aic bloods.jpgFact: Blood is the New Black makes funny shirts.

Fact: ASOS waits until other people make funny shirts, then pounces.

A New Fact (to us, anyway): ASOS will copy any designer, not just the big ones, including this indie brand - as long as a star wears it.

So when a reader sent in that Blood is the New Black’s Blood Gang shirt was copied, we were a little surprised that ASOS even knew BNB, and that some star wore a shirt by them (anybody know who? Our guess goes to Ashton.) It’s also kind of funny that the copy retails for more than quadruple the price of the original.

But here’s another thought - could the actual Bloods gang claim rights to the design? Might be tough to hold up in court…
