B and b meets Bloomies

bumble and bloomingdales.jpgWho wouldn’t want Mary-Kate Olsen’s hair?

Right. That’s what we thought. You might think it’s impossible to achieve without a stylist by your side, but don’t despair, we’re here to help. Or Bumble & bumble’s here to help. This Monday, October 19, from noon to 2 pm and 4 to 7 pm they’re kicking off their new Bb.StylingBar and in-house shop at Bloomingdale’s flagship store on 59th.

One of their editorial stylists (and MK’s go-to hair guy) Rolando Beauchamp will be on site doing live makeovers featuring looks from Bumble’s “styling menu.” He’ll style one model’s hair over and over using Bumble products to teach shoppers how to achieve the different looks. Onlookers who want a more hands-on experience can walk in and get a fresh look for just $35.

Shopping + Good Cause = Love

glamours fashion gives back totes 09.jpgLabor Day weekend used to mean back to school shopping. Now it means beer and BBQs and maybe, if we can stand it, back to Fashion Week shopping.

But if you’re still looking for a valid excuse to spend money in the next few days, how about for charity?

Each October, Glamour asks six designers to participate in their Fashion Gives Back project. This year, they’re recruited Jason Wu, Alejandro Ingelmo, jewelry designer Pamela Love, Brian Reyes, Bensoni, and Lorick, (Abigail, of Gossip Girl fame) to design a series of limited edition totes. They range from sketchy black lines from Wu to a dreamcatcher heart from Love and are exclusively available at Bloomingdales.

At $35, they’re not only affordable, but adorable. And the best part is one hundred percent of the proceeds go to Dress for Success.

Unless of course you are still in school, in which case these are way cooler than the last book bag we carried.

Life With...

Life With Who What Wear!

WWW katharine and hillary.jpgWe’ve interviewed stylists and editors and publicists and designers, but we’ve never entered the world of blogging, or even the internet for a Life With.

So welcome to the world of Who What Wear.

We know you love their site. We love their site. And I made it a priority to sit down with Hillary Kerr and Katherine Power while in LA at the end of July to learn how they left the world of print and moved onto the internet. And more importantly, how they ended up putting together one of the most successful fashion sites among the millions.

Inside, how they blew up, where they’re going and what the launch of their book means
to them.

September Nightlife

mfl-fashion[1].jpgWe are so excited for September.

While the official list won’t be released until August 17th, we just received a huge rundown of events for Fashion’s Night Out, the New York City fashion celebration this September 10th. Over 300 retailers in all five boroughs have already signed up to party from 6pm to 11pm. We’re a little overwhelmed by it…in a good way.

We already told you about Alex Wang at Barney’s. That’s just the tip of the iceberg. Also at Barney’s? The Olsen twins (girl crush times two!), Jonathan Adler and Lisa Perry, on hand to teach you how to knit. After you learn, you can knit a square to be included in a blanket to be sold to benefit the September 11th Memorial Fund.

Adventures in Copyright: Kerr to Explain?

miranda kerrs lingerie ads.jpgI’m 99% sure that’s Miranda Kerr on the left.

But I’m only half way through my coffee and three hours deep into a move from Brooklyn into Manhattan and I could be wrong. So we’ll start with a yes.

Is she even allowed to model other lingerie? For a department store? Even if she’s best friends with Elle MacPherson and actually only wears her bras in real life because they’re a million times better than Victoria’s Secret? VS has pretty iron clad contracts for their girls. Want to walk Givenchy? Fine. Want to model in another catalog? Absolutely not.

And if it’s not her, way to go Bloomingdale’s for finding the only other human being in the world who looks like that.

Meanwhile this looks just like Cat McNeil, but it’s not, is it? The url even reads, “PseudoCat.” I might need another cup of coffee.

Happy Birthday NYC

liz and james tee.jpgIt’s New York’s 400th birthday next week.

Which makes us feel wonderfully young and makes designers, including Elizabeth and James, Michael Kors, Tibi, Tory Burch and DvF feel like making one-off designs in honor of the city they love.

The pieces will sell at the two Bloomingdales in New York (where a purchase also gets you two tickets to the Museum of the City of New York) and online.

Everything’s under $128, including jeans from Seven for All Mankind, a scarf from BCBG, a Michael Stars tee and a Kate Spade tote.

It launches on Monday, but if you’re feeling patriotic today, Gerard Butler’s been filming a 4th of July parade on my street all week.

PSA: Bespoke Perfumery

memoireliquidebloomingdalescounter.JPGThese days it seems everyone has a “signature scent.” But how many of those scents are actually tailored to your specific preferences?

To celebrate the launch of their Mémoire Liquide Bespoke Perfumery Counter, in the newly revamped fragrance department of Bloomingdale’s 59th Street store, sisters Robin Coe-Hutshing and Jennifer Coe-Bakewell will be conducting one-on-one blending appointments tomorrow and Thursday from 11-7.

The sisters, who are also the masterminds behind Studio BeautyMix at Fred Segal, have been custom blending fragrances for 25 years. They’ll guide you through their 75 fragrances and help you mix and blend your very own scent, which you can then buy in the form of a perfume, shower gel or body lotion.

Or if you’re fragrance ADD like me, you can create a mini coffret of three different scents to mix and match.

I had the pleasure of doing one of these appointments and it was definitely a treat to have Jennifer and Robin guide me through the process. I listed off a few of my favorite smells and from there the sisters started to hand me different notes they thought I would enjoy. They were absolutely dead on— nine out of 10 they chose were just my type.

You can schedule an appointment by calling 212-705-2403 and get a scent of your very own.

PSA: Mark Vanderloo at Bloomingdale’s

mark vanerloo likes his undies.jpgThe facts: It’s freezing outside, you love male models, and you haven’t been to Bloomingdale’s in forever.

So? Tomorrow, in celebration of DKNY’s latest fragrance man meat, Dutch model Mark Vanderloo will be at the 59th Street Bloomingdale’s, in the men’s fragrance section, at 1pm.

Officially, he’ll be there to promote the brand’s latest men’s scent, DKNYMEN, taking photos and signing autographs. Unofficially, he’ll act as a life-size teddy bear for iPhone pictures and YouTube.

We can’t make it. But if you can, you know what to do.

Julie Haus Needs Design Interns

julie haus spring 09 interns.jpgJulie Haus would like some interns, please.

You know her name because every time you zone out in Saks or Bloomingdale’s one of her brightly colored party dresses snaps you out of it.

If you’ve been wading through the PR and magazine internships because you actually want hands on design experience, this one’s for you.

Julie needs help producing her Fall 09 collection. So, if you have a basic knowledge of fabric, you pay attention to detail and are generally enthusiastic and available at least two days a week, email your resume and cover letter to mthompson@juliehaus.com.

The internship is unpaid, but they’ll sign off on your school credit and they’d love it if you could start now.

Also, if you know your way around the garment district, this will be a million times easier.

Soho’s Holiday Stroll

tyra banks plays santa.jpgWhat if we told you that next Thursday night, you could make your way through Soho and get 25% off at Theory?

Then you could swing by Kate’s Paperie and get 15% off all the Christmas cards in the world and stop by Tibi for hot chocolate and 20% off. Or if Missoni’s more your style, you could hop in and grab a free gift with your on-sale purchase. Then you can grab some books for your dad at McNally for 20% off and a free umbrella at Bloomingdale’s in case it starts raining. But don’t eat too many candy canes because when you’re done you can collect your free margarita at LaEsquina and top it off with discounted hot chocolate and cookies from Balthazar. And all the while you’ll have been helping New York City’s homeless.

It’s the first annual Soho Holiday Stroll sponsored by A.C.E.,(The Association of Community Employment Programs for the Homeless), on December 11th from 6 to 11pm. What’s the catch?

The $20 bracelet you have to purchase for access to the discounts. But the money goes straight to charity and if that’s not enough motivation for you, it basically covers your margarita. And if you’d rather give more, you can buy the $150 VIP bracelet which grants you access to the after party, location TBA.

Click here for a list of all the participating stores and their promotions - you can buy your bracelet on line or in most of the stores.

LC Takes On Diane

whitney and lauren fight.jpgWe don’t go to Bloomingdale’s that often. Department stores are semi-overwhelming and it’s about two blocks too far down Broadway.

But we did go right before Paris because we needed bras and we did go yesterday because we needed Marc. And while there, we noticed a change.

Diane von Furstenberg has had her own space on the third floor since the first time we went to Bloomingdale’s. It’s the same size and scope as the Marc by Marc area on the fourth floor. And it’s all Diane, all the time.

Or it was, until they plopped a rack of Lauren Conrad’s dresses in the middle.

We, or I, worked in retail long enough to know how much thought goes into merchandising. In the public eye, DVF now means Whitney Port which means someone at Bloomingdale’s is getting their giggles from imagining some sort of third floor fashion-reality-show fight.

Stay tuned.

Harajuku Girls, Live

harajuku girls ad.jpgGwen Stefani’s been harping on the whole Harajuku look for a while now, and today is no exception.

Mrs. Rossdale’s backup singers will be doing a grand tour of New York’s Bloomingdale’s locations - first, they’ll perform at the 59th St location today at 12:30pm, then again on Friday at noon before they head downtown to the Bloomingdale’s Soho location for another performance at 3pm.

Their mini-concerts are meant to celebrate Harajuku Lovers’ new handbag collection, but this probably has more to do with not getting lost in the Fashion Week shuffle, being that Gwen will only attend as a guest, if that.

It’s not a bad idea - though we would have much preferred a window performance by Siri.

Ebates is awesome.jpgWhat kind of friends would we be without letting you in on some of our coolest finds?

When Jazzi told us she’s been using a website called Ebates to get paid for shopping online, we were like, “Whatever” but after hearing her out, we thought, “Woah! this could really add up.” If you’ve heard of it, you love it, and if you haven’t, allow us to explain:

1. It’s basically a shopping savings account that very simply gives you back money for shopping. Most websites make money for referring you, but Ebates just shares the wealth.

2. All you have to do is sign up (10 seconds max), then shop directly at some of your favorite stores through a link on the Ebates website.

The hardest part is remembering to go through the Ebates when you feel like shopping, but they even have a “reminder tool” for that, so we’ve got zero complaints. And the perks? Well, money for shopping and referring friends, no spam, a lot of shopping options (sorry, no Net-a-Porter), plus you get a $10 gift card just for signing up. And the best part? More shopping, less guilt.

So if you feel like shopping on the likes of Nordstrom, Shopbop, Bloomingdale’s, Old Navy, Saks, Target, Zappos, Bluefly and YOOX - to name a few - at least make some cash doing it for, you know, more shopping.

We seriously just made $39.00 on some relatively small purchases we would have made anyway. Maybe it really is magic…

Bloomingdale’s Wants to Heart Hipsters…

Image0092.JPG…the trouble seems to be that they have no idea what they are.

There’s a spread in their arty-inspired Fall 2007 catalog meant to feature four young artists - presumably to show that Bloomingdale’s is a shopping mecca for young creatives as well as polished suburban babes. But they didn’t bother to distinguish between the artists and the other models in the spread, so we have no idea who paints for a living, and who just poses.

Something else that’s fun?

The spread gets titled “Y.E.S. Williamsburg,” and yet you can find the models/artists lounging by an expensive car wearing elbow-length gloves and a pinstripe BCBG suit. Another page reveals a model (artist?) wearing a cherry-red Juicy Couture coat in what appears to be Schiller’s Liquor Bar in the Lower East Side (not quite Brooklyn).

In what’s perhaps the weirdest page, a young woman struts away from the subway in a polyester Lacoste running suit - and she’s too coiffed to be ironic, or invoking The Royal Tennenbaums.

What’s happening here?
