Doc Jean

jean paul gaultier doc martens.jpgHow does one follow up a brilliantly Bardot themed couture collection?

With something far from similar if you’re Jean Paul Gaultier.

Here’s the first peek of a series of boots he’s doing for Doc Martens. The image includes two perforated women’s shoes in both black and white with just a cryptic caption and no real information on timing, though it sounds like they’ll only be available in Gaultier stores in France.

Each time we look at the picture we see a punk-y YSL cage shoe, but seriously, if you can’t get to Paris, these might be your next DIY.

Quote of the Day

“The spot is a subtle tribute to the genius of Serge Gainsbourg and to the sensuality of Brigitte Bardot.” - So says the director of this commercial, in WWD.

Do You Icon?

g w y n e t h.jpgFashionista Debate # 749

Once again, the office was in heated debate over a super important issue: Do you have a fashion icon?

As usual, Natalie’s adamant: no, decidedly not. But I wonder, how can this be possible?

Everyone should have an icon, someone to look to when you can’t figure out which socks to wear, someone to grab ideas from, someone that just makes you smile.

When the topic came up, I stared at Britt expecting an immediate, “Gwyneth Paltrow.” But she didn’t say it, so I did. To my surprise, she didn’t say “Duh” in that funny Cher Horowitz way she has. She was on the fence about the whole icon status. Sure, she writes love letters to Gwyn, but never thought about how she loves Stella and McQueen and structured blazers and white t shirts and major shoes the same way the super mom does.

And okay, so Hayley has a Holy Trinity (Kate, Jane, Brigitte) that she loves to look at and I can’t stop staring at Ezra Koenig every chance I get, but who’s in the majority?

Do you have an icon, a couple of icons, do you even know that you have an icon, or do you march to the beat of your own stylist?

Kate for Sale

Kate Moss by Irving Penn.jpgDoes anybody have an extra $40,000 dollars laying around?

Because we’re going to need it to get a piece of Kate at next month’s Christie’s auction.

On April 10th in the middle of the afternoon, 135 prints from the private collection of German photographer Gert Elfering will go up for auction at Rockefeller Center.

Nude prints of Kate and Gisele shot by Irving Penn are among the most sought after, as are Avedon portraits of Brigitte Bardot, a semi-topless Lauren Hutton, and even The Beatles, along with prints shot by Man Ray, Mapplethorpe, Helmut Newton, Diane Arbus and Horst P. Horst.

We’re kind of wondering where some of these pieces will be hung once the lucky betters take them home. Would it be in bad taste to have a naked Kate in the entry way? How about nude Gisele in the kitchen?
