What Happened at Leonard

leonardss10-4.jpgParis is kind of the only place you’ll end up at a show whose name you don’t even know.

Take Leonard for example. What the hell is Leonard?

But you never know what you’re going to find. So I sat down and waited with an open mind until they started to run so late, I mean so late, that the photogs started whistling tunes in unison; one even started belting out Nessun Dorma at the top of his lungs.

I ran out to see what Bumble and bumble was up to backstage at Guy Laroche. But that went awry so I snuck back into Leonard, where I’d lost my seat and stood in the back to watch the show.

So what was it? Simple, nothing to-it, and sort of TIbi-esque - but not as good - cute dresses and some flowing summer gowns. I imagine a Real Housewife of Dallas would love it.

And there you have it.

When Bigger is Better

larastoneforeres.jpegIf you live in New York, you know that we have been cursed with some downright nasty weather these past few weeks. It’s rainy and muggy and dark almost all day long.

Almost as depressing is what it’s doing to our hair. Fluffy, frizzy, mess is a bit of an understatement. Which makes these shots of Lara Stone for Eres all the more enviable. We’ve been ogling them ever since they were first released.

Of course, she’s ridiculously attractive no matter what, but how sexy are these? And of course the expensive lingerie doesn’t hurt either. But now we’ve begun to fixate solely on the curls. Now this is how you do big hair.

We’re thinking it might be time to bust out the big curling iron and our Bumble and bumble Surf Spray and embrace the insane humidity.

Tuesdays with Ted

ted gibson salon.jpgEven though I’m officially brown-bagging my lunch since the e-word fell into a r-word, the one thing I can’t bear to give up is my pricey haircuts. Try as I might, I just can’t cut back on them. I’ve considered trying to DIY, but I had a bad experience in my youth that left me with uneven, half-inch long bangs on Picture Day Eve, so I can’t even handle a pair of shears without having traumatic flashbacks.

I guess I’m a salon snob, but I dealt with so many horrible hair cuts back in the day (hello infamous bowl cut of ‘92), that the minute I had the chance, I plopped myself in a chair at Bumble and have refused to go anywhere less since. The unfortunate side effect of this stubbornness is that my already anemic bank account goes on life support every 6 - 8 weeks.

So, news: Ted Gibson, one of my all-time favorite stylists and an all around sweetheart, was feeling my pain. The man behind the hair of Angelina Jolie and Anne Hathaway understands that times are rough and wallets are tight so he’s launching Recessionista Tuesdays at his eponymous salon. Every Tuesday, you can swing by the Fifth Avenue location for bargain basement prices on all the basic services. We’re talking $40 for a blowout and $75 and up for a cut or color. Considering the usual base price for services is $125, that’s one hell of a deal.

Best of all, if you swing by the salon between 10 and noon on Tuesdays and drop your business card, you’ll be entered to win a free hair makeover with Ted himself at the end of the day. The economy might be a mess but Ted is apparently a firm believer that your hair shouldn’t have to be. Amen.

Backstage At Viv's Gold Show

VIV GOLD SS09 .JPGFashion’s full of tough choices. Since we already saw Vivienne Westwood’s Red Label show in London, we thought we’d swing by backstage for her Gold Label show before heading to Yojhi Yamamoto.

First, the hair. Bumble and Bumble’s Rolando Beauchamp is the nicest person we’ve ever met - and his devotion to Vivienne might only be matched by ours.

“It’s all about hot desert days,” he told me. “This girl, she’s been out in the desert, hasn’t showered or washed her hair. The products are giving me that dry dirty texture before I pull the front off of the face and wrap it all in tulle. It’s different colored tulle which I’m using as though it’s just more hair.”

Meanwhile, the models tried on their clothes. Or rather, they stood still while three people at a time dressed them, (which doesn’t bode well for our plans to one day wear Vivienne Westwood everyday) and six hands put on their shoes. Then Vivienne tweaked, someone took Polaroids, and the girls went into make up.

We couldn’t steal the shoes for you, security was insane, but we can tell you how to get that amazing black lip - on TeenVogue!

Cat Holstein Rocks My Socks

Catherine Holstein.jpgI may as well stop going to shows now.

The only thing I want to wear next Spring is Catherine Holstein’s collection, though I don’t think I could manage the 6-inch Cesare Paciotti sandals that topped it off.

Her clothes, shown on the runway at Bumble & Bumble, were my idea of perfect. The show opened with blush pink dresses, shorts and tops paired with chunky brown belts and woven knit hats worn throughout. It took a slow turn toward nautical, not Trovata nautical, but the subtler nautical of faded navy and white stripes with touches of red and mustard. Then, toward the end of the show, Holstein did lace on her own terms, in an off-white, antique pattern - and very sheer.

Often times it feels like designers try to tell too many stories in one collection with piece-y results, but Holstein’s felt like parts of a greater whole.

As in, I want the whole thing - and judging by the looks on front row faces, I’m not the only one.

W’Hair It’s At

Bumble and Bumble hair.JPGThe Bumble and Bumble space on West 13th is one of our favorite venues for the shows.

There’s good light, you can take pictures from several different points, and we love when the out-of-work model waiters serve us fat little macaroons before and after.

So it comes as no surprise that it’s kind of the place to show this season. Their roster of designers: Ohne Titel (for a third time, a Bumble first), Catherine Holstein (doing her first real runway show there), Staerk, Jeremy Laing, Vicente Villarin, Koi Suwannagate, Liz McClean and Victoria Bartlett.

The Bumble people have a way of picking out the next successful designers to show at their space. Not to mention, if you actually have time to kill between shows, you may as well be in the West Village.

Art + Commerce to Cast Runway Models

daria werbowy in black and white.jpgArt + Commerce, the powerhouse management agency that was bought by IMG last year, is stepping a little further into the fashion world with this upcoming Fashion Week.

They’ve starting their own casting division, which they’ve been doing for print and editorial, but now they’re getting into runway casting, so expect great girls at every show they get involved with.

It’s going to be kind of a soft launch - they’re starting with only one show this coming season, and don’t just expect the likes of Anouck, Lily and Du Juan - they’ll be casting their girls from all available agencies, not just IMG.

And at which show will their runway taste debut?

Ohne Titel.

See you at Bumble and Bumble! Ohne Titel’s showing there for the third season in a row, a Bumble first.

Amy Winehouse Inspires a Hair Class

AmyWinehouse.jpg Karl Lagerfeld isn’t the only one taken by Amy Winehouse:

We hear after his Chanel Paris-Londres show, which he claimed was alight with Winehouse’s style, the Bumble & Bumble University team crafted a special hair class to teach their hair flock how to make a modern beehive.

“It was amazing,” tells a model from the class. “They made this amazing beehive using only my actual hair, which isn’t that long. I looked so cool.”

Could the beehive - or maybe we should call it a half hive - replace the traditional up ‘do at proms and formal functions? Maybe, but if it needs a whole hair class to figure it out, a flat iron and a cute headband from Goody might be a saner choice for party girls without stylists.
