Gareth Does New York, Clothes Stay in Paris

DELAUREN SS10.jpgOn Sunday night (a bit delayed, sorry), I headed to MILK to watch Gareth Pugh’s Ruth Hogben produced film. I’d expected a preview of the collection, but instead I watched a giant cube in the middle of MILK’s loading dock. Each side represented an element and the top of the cube, which was essentially the ceiling, represented the fifth element, the ethereal.

It was pretty to watch, but I was too tired and too sober (and maybe not cool enough) to absorb it on any sort of philosophical level, so instead Faran and Blue and I made up Hollywood names for fashion couples - not necessarily make out couples, but we-go-to-everything-together couples. Yes, we know we’re getting increasingly delirious as the week goes on:

1. Cecilia Dean & Steven Gan: STEVELIA
2. Lauren Santo Domingo & Derek Blasberg: DELAUREN
3. Becka Diamond & Byrdie Bell: BYRKA
4. Fabiola Beracasa & Tallulah Harlech: FALLULAH
5. Keegan Singh, Kate Lanphear & Mark Holgate: KEEKARK

Who’d we miss?

Ronson Powers Unite!

cronsonss10-9.JPGThese days we all know the last name Ronson draws a crowd, though sometimes an unwanted paparazzi-type one. But not today, at least for the most part. Though there was some serious seating drama for a hot second, everything got figured out and Charlotte sent her clothes down the runway to tunes compiled by her twin sister.

Brother Mark, Byrdie Bell, Becka Diamond, Russell Simmons and his nieces Angela and Vanessa, Joe Zee, Brooklyn Decker, Tinsley Mortimer (in I Heart Ronson from JCPenney), and Olivier Zahm took it all in from the front row. The consensus in our section, and from many others we overheard while squeezing ourselves out the door, was that this was by far Charlotte’s best collection.

There were “Let’s Get Physical” braided headbands, thigh-length leggings/tights with well-placed runs, tons of the shorts (in leather and jersey) that the designer herself so often wears, and an army jacket/anorak that I must have if it kills me. Plus, lots of one-shouldered action. It’s all happening on that front, people. Embrace it.

Would You Wear

But Would You Actually Wear OTK Boots?

rodarte aw09 thigh high boots.jpgI think I spent an entire month watching over-the-knee boots march down runways.

From Rodarte in New York, to Pam HoggLondon in and Louis Vuitton in Paris - and about a million in between - they were everywhere, but aside from Lauren Santo Domingo’s turn in custom-made Brian Atwoods, we’d placed stretchy leather up to one’s butt cheeks in the runway-only category, along with everything sheer from SS09.

I was wrong, of course. Byrdie Bell broke hers out for a party a couple of weeks ago and as fall merchandise creeps its way into stores, we’re preparing for an onslaught. Stuart Weitzman’s square-toed versions, in both suede and leather, hit Shopbop this week and StyleFile is even contemplating thigh high clogs.

I remember the first time I wore almost knee-high leather boots to my suburban Catholic high school and gave everyone a heart attack. Even if this is New York City circa now, I imagine a similar, if not more dangerous reaction with those six extra inches of leather. I love the idea, am obsessed with the look, but I’m pretty sure I’d look like a hooker regardless of what I wear on the rest of my body.

Abby, however, can’t wait to rock a pair. Thoughts?

DJ Jazzy Gemma

gemma ward dj.jpgAmidst all this model madness there’s one particular doll face we’ve been missing.

We haven’t seen Gemma Ward since, well, we didn’t actually see The Black Balloon, so since the preview for The Black Balloon. Sister Sophie popped up at Australia Fashion Week, but Gemma’s all but disappeared since an Italian Vogue editorial with Lily at this time last year.

Until now - she’s DJing for the Doe Fund at The Angel Orensanz Foundation next week. Tickets, $150 here, buy you a few hours of drinking and dancing to tunes spun by Gemma, Byrdie Bell, Richie Rich, Olivia Palermo and Christian Siriano.

When you see her, tell her fashion misses her.

Breaking: Byrdie Bell for Ford Models

Byrdie Bell Finally, a logical fashion decision.

Byrdie Bell, the actress and socialite, has signed with Ford Models.

The New York native is of Norwegian descent and actually bears the name Evelyn Byrd Bell, though she’s been called Byrdie since childhood.

She has a movie coming out this Fall called Homecoming, with Mischa Barton and Matt Long, the cutie from Jack and Bobby, which never should have been canceled.

And she follows in the footsteps of fellow socialite beauties Vanessa Traina and Harley Viera-Newton, both of whom recently signed with Elite. Lydia Hearst, Amanda Hearst, Margherita Missoni, and Julia Restoin-Roitfeld are also Manhattan socialites with modeling agencies (most are on IMG’s women’s board).

It seems Ford has their work cut out for them - Byrdie’s already been in Vogue more times than Nicole Kidman.
