i-D-less?

its the end of iD as we know it.jpgThere’ve been tweets that London’s i-D Magazine is dead.

From Derek Blasberg: Gossip at Chanel lunch in Venice: did London fashion rag i-D just close? Or did it just get really, really smaller? Anybody know for sure?

He’s in Venice for Chanel resort surrounded by people who know such things.

But then there are tweets that say it’s just shrinking.

From COACD: ID MAGAZINE to cut its issue….will publish 6 times a year….Terry&Tricia Jones/ publishers.

But we imagine its publishers know such things, too. And while we want to weep over the possible loss of the magazine’s brilliant blinking covers and its consistent devotion to models, we’ll take solace in the fact that six issues a year are better than none.

And now we’ll go buy a handful of copies just in case they need a bit of support to stay afloat.

Blue Eye Stock Plummets, Long Legs Up 3%

beautyholdingscom.jpgThis is borderline creepy and definitely strange, but we have to share.

There’s a website called Beautyholdings.com. It calls itself an “online talent incubator (eCubator)” and allows you to invest in aspiring models. We use the term “model” lightly because these girls look more likely to appear in a Frederick’s of Hollywood catalog than a Fendi ad, but basically, you buy them like you buy stock and profit, hopefully, off of their success.

We’ll ignore for a second the inappropriateness of investing in human body parts and instead focus on how this could be cool if it were applied to real models, say the ones on COACD. You’d invest in the ones with the greatest potential when they’re like twelve or thirteen and by the time they open Calvin Klein or Prada at eighteen you have enough money for a new wardrobe, shoes and maybe even a Vespa - because realistically it’s just not enough time to make enough for a house in the Hamptons or a private jet.

So, if it didn’t involve actual humans, or if it was just a game played with Monopoly money, we might think it was the coolest thing since on-line Scrabble.

But, alas, it’s not.

Changes on the Runway

d squared spring 2009.jpgWe know more than a few of you have already noticed the models at the Dsquared² show this week.

In reverse of how shows usually go, the majority of the models were black, with just a couple majorities.

Now, there’s a delightful rumor on COACD, that next week’s Lanvin show will have an “all ethnic” line up.

We’re just going to skip over the part where we debate the definition of “ethnic” and admit we know exactly what he’s talking about, so here’s the better question -

Is this in response to the upcoming Vogue Italia? Or would designers have made an effort to cast entirely non-white model line ups in their shows without it?

(And better yet, will this trend carry over into the women’s shows?…)
