Quote of the Day

“Celebrities — the cult — they don’t exist before Versace. This kind of thing to go and dress a rock band — nobody did that before Gianni did.”—Donatella Versace to OUT Magazine (via WWD) where she’s on the cover with model Paul Sculfor, aka that guy who dated Jennifer Aniston and Cameron Diaz. Cult of celebrity, indeed.

Ch-Ch-Ch-Changes at Vogue

voguejuly2009coversiennamiller.jpegThe internet is buzzing this morning over a post on The Imagist late yesterday that said: “US Vogue is quietly getting a revamp in light of the on-going ad slump. Think a new circle of models, an influx of fresh, young photographers and a desire for ‘unpredictability’ in the stories.”

Hallelujah is all I have to say. That magazine needs a shake up in a big, bad way. Let’s just hope they actually follow through, and in a well thought-out manner - truly taking into account the changes in both America in general, as well as the fashion and publishing industries.

This can’t be about just throwing money at the situation because really, they already do that. And we’re pretty sure those McKinsey consultants aren’t going to be increasing anyone’s budgets over at 4 Times Square.

But this is a good thing. I’ve always found that tighter budgets, in the end, lead to more creative solutions and final products.

London is Definitely Calling

camerondiazandleonardodicaprio.jpgCameron Diaz, Leo Di Caprio, Mickey Rourke, Rihanna, Russell Crowe, Pharrell Williams, Michelle Williams, Jude Law - no hang on, Jude lives here….so apart from him, what are all these Hollywood’ers doing in London?

Looks like school is out in LA, as they seem to have descended en masse. Of course, the tabbies are having a ball speculating whether Cameron is here with her new “boyfriend” Leo di Cap, or if she’s dating Jude Law, who she hooked up with in the nightclub Movida. (A weird choice to be sure - it’s a bit bridge and tunnel.)

She will be happy to know, however, that Kate Moss’s hairdresser/bestie, James Brown, has finally opened up a salon in London. His staff charges, well, a snip - only £55. But to get the man himself, you need to be prepared to fork over £500.

What Are You Beyond?

Iambeyonddramabag.jpgI’m a huge Bikram yoga junkie, though my practice has certainly fallen off a bit since I landed at Fashionista. Note to self: get back to that hot room!

That said, I’m always on the lookout for cool yoga gear. Currently, I’m obsessing over these canvas totes from Beyond Yoga, which are actually not yoga-centric at all but definitely useful for carrying around my mat, clothes, and coconut water.

But really, they’re just super cute canvas bags that graffiti artist Andre Charles adorned with words selected by some A-List celebs. They were asked to complete the sentence “I am beyond…”

Cameron Diaz, Tough Girl

V60_CAMERON_WITHOUT_TEXT_5.jpgWe love when celebrities put themselves in the hands of a talented photo/styling/hair/makeup crew and let them do what they do best.

It unfortunately doesn’t happen as often as it should, usually thanks to a high-powered, but incredibly meddling, publicist.

We understand their role in preserving said celeb’s image. But we’ve been on way too many shoots where an awesome photo never got taken because someone didn’t think it was the right “message”

This makes us appreciate V’s cover story (shot by Mert & Marcus) with Cameron Diaz all the more. Cameron’s sunny California surfer girl image is great. But thank god she can still have fun and mix it up a bit too.

Edgy, early Madonna-inspired Cameron is a very good thing indeed.

Life With Rolando! Part II

rolando!.jpgSo once I got over my line of Olsen questioning I finally got down to business.

If there’s a common thread among the people I’ve interviewed, it’s their nostalgia for a time when talent was enough, when you worked hard and made your way up the chain to the ridiculously successful place in which they all sit now instead of these days when everyone wants a piece of the industry and who you know becomes more important than what you know.

In Part II, we talk about how Rolando ended up at Bumble & bumble, Fashion Week work versus editorial work, being on a plane with Charlie’s Angels and his Madonna moment - because really, everyone has one.
