Fashion Is Fun

It Looks Like the Road to Heaven…

In case you’ve been under a fashion rock this week, you know that tonight’s the night for the taping of the big Victoria’s Secret show. You may have also heard the rumor that some of the Angels are going to be recreating George Michael’s supremely awesome “Freedom ‘90” video for the occasion.

Now, we love Doutzen, Chanel, Miranda, et al. But seriously nothing will ever top this MTV supermodel explosion.

Naomi dancing in the sheer black top! Cindy in the tub! Christy and the sheet dress! Tatjana in the animal print! Super blonde Linda in that delicious oversized sweater! Throw in the jukebox and jacket from “Faith” burning and you’ve got yourself a video masterpiece.

So before it happens (or doesn’t) we thought we’d give you a little reminder of the original. And this song never fails to brighten a day. Though we’ll always contend that sometimes the clothes do indeed make the man. Just sayin’.

When Models Laughed

This should make your day.

We stumbled on a video of Kate Moss, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington and maybe Amber Valetta (but I’ve watched it five times and still can’t tell for sure) posing for maybe Mario Testino (going off the voice here, he doesn’t make an appearance) for an almost vintage Pirelli calendar shoot.

The girls look insanely young, dancing around the studio, hopping on each others backs and genuinely bursting with personality until they accidentally break their set. And I thought being a model circa now looked like fun.

You Wanted to Poke Pilati…

ysl manifesto.jpgFor this, the fifth edition of the YSL Manifesto, the brand has finally decided to take things online.

In preparation they’ve launched both a Facebook page and a Twitter account to increase their online social networking presence and prepare their fans for the launch of a ‘microsite’ on September 1st which will store archives of past manifestos, a manifesto blog monitor, links to their new online sites and eventually a downloadable copy of the manifesto.

But before you get your hands on the actual publication, you’ll have the chance to watch the behind the scenes video of Inez & Vinoodh’s shoot with Christy Turlington. And then finally, on September 12th, you can snag a copy of the manifesto mid-Fashion Week. Though honestly, we still haven’t figured out their favorite corners.

Christy Crush, Part Two

christyturlingtonandtemperleysaleforCARE.jpegSometimes I really wish I was a Hamptons girl. Not for the scene, or especially the concept of having to dress up to pick up some groceries at Citarella. But for the occasional event that I wish I was attending on some summer weekend, like this one.

I’m occasionally found in Montauk (which I so don’t consider the Hamptons despite this summer’s attempts to make it seem otherwise) and if I was on Saturday I would so be making the drive to East to meet one Christy Turlington, who I professed my undying love for just the other day.

The thing is…you can live the dream for me, as I maneuver the weekend crowds in Park Slope. The supermodel is co-hosting an event with Temperley London called Shop for CARE on Saturday, to help equip women around the world with the tools they need to get above the poverty line.

There will be a silent auction of one-of-a-kind and vintage Temperley gowns and proceeds from the week’s sales at the store will also go to the cause.

All the details after the jump!

Dear Christy, Don’t Go Changin’

christyturlingtonaugustvogueloveletter.jpgDear Christy,

You have always been my favorite and yet, you just keep getting better.

I mean, you’re obviously still ridiculously gorgeous, but also way cooler than I would have ever imagined the first time I saw you in a magazine or when I watched in the best George Michael video ever.

I love that you’re on the cover of Vogue. But what I love even more is the retrospective of your 25 year career in their pages. Oh, the memories.

Mc2 Model Management Needs an Intern

mc2.jpgMc2 Model Management’s NYC branch is looking for “highly motivated and energetic” interns to assist their agents part-time or full-time.

If you’re thinking to yourself, who?, it’s the agency founded by Jean Luc Brunel, the guy who first signed Christy Turlington when she was just fourteen.

Responsibilities include scanning pictures, answering phones, assisting with updating models’ portfolios, and working in Photoshop, Word and Excel (so you have to already know what you’re doing in those).

You Must: Be interested in the fashion, modeling and photography industries, outgoing, well spoken, and able to keep cool while five different people demand Starbucks / copies / phone calls / etc.

This is a great opportunity to get hands on experience at a smaller agency, plus they can offer a stipend and a Metrocard as well as school credit if needed. Send your resume to intern@mc2mm.com

Good luck!

Christy Turlington Likes to Read

gwyneth paltrow and christy turlington smile.jpgPlease don’t ask me why, but I’m obsessed with reading Gwyneth Paltrow’s GOOP.

So I was extra tickled today when Gwyneth said she’d be sharing her and her friends’ favorite books, and that friends list included Christy Turlington.

Christy’s favorite reads include Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury, Hemingway’s The Sun Also Rises, and Pride and Prejudice.

Gwynnie’s? Jane Eyre, Crime and Punishment and The Sheltering Sky by Paul Bowles, which she says “set [her] straight”.

[Since this newest edition isn’t on her site yet, feel free to click through if you’re really curious about the favorite reads of Louis Vuitton’s Spring 09 face. ]

So if you’re ever stuck in an elevator with Christy, consider yourself armed for ice breaking.

Marie Claire Hires Supermodel, Camera Crew (Unrelated)

Marie Claire certainly knows how to generate some buzz in this dwindling ad climate:

They’re following in the steps of Interview and GQ, and hiring a supermodel for some light editorial work. The December issue premieres Christy Turlington’s soon-to-be regular column, which will feature “topics such as politics, mothers around the world and her global travels for humanitarian causes.”

Also, MC is apparently filming their own reality show right now, Running in Heels, meant to give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at putting together a fashion magazine.

Which kind of makes us wonder - beyond hiring the pretty people and filming the crazy ones, what other sort of gimmicks will print magazines come up with to draw extra attention to themselves after every big book shoots their own prime time mockumentary and hands over page space to celebrities? Next move: pop up issues and music when you open the cover? A game show with the top prize of getting your own magazine to edit?

Interview Gets Kate, Margiela

interview magazine cover with kate moss.jpgEverybody’s dying to see the full on redesign of Interview since Ingrid Sischy’s replacement by the Glenn O’Brien / Fabien Baron / Christopher Bollen trifecta earlier this year, which starts with the upcoming September issue. And today’s WWD spilled some fun details:

1. The cover girl is Kate Moss, looking a bit like Batman

2. There’s an interview with Maison Martin Margiela, which is a lot like having an interview with Elvis - nearly impossible

3. A new flashback section called “Interview Back Page”, the first of which will feature an interview with Christy Turlington when she was just sixteen

We’re truly happy that Interview’s getting the recognition and extra push it always deserved, and it looks like everyone’s taking notice - their August issue was their best selling in a decade.

We’ll put up Kate’s spread as soon as we can get our hands on it…

Supermodel Dance Party

A supermodel loving reader sent us this fun video of Stephanie Seymour’s engagement party from 1994.

We haven’t seen this many supers in one place since an Issac runway way back when. Spotted are Naomi, Claudia, Kate, Stephanie, Helena and Christy all living it up on a roof-top terrace.

Highlights:

- Janice Dickinson’s narration and praise of Naomi’s awesomeness.

- Naomi speaking Italian and French sporadically, even though no one else is.

- The stuffed animal that Naomi calls her best friend and her lover, we’re wondering if he’s still around.

- The phrase “vodka…straight up” coming from Kate when asked what she’s drinking.

- Stephanie Seymour’s white lace gloves.

Can we come to the reunion?

Supes, Supersized

In honor of Fall 2008’s return of the supermodel, we found a fun video for everyone to watch over and over again.

Check out the clip if you want to see some majors from the 90’s do what they do best - walk the runway. There’s no talking in this one, so don’t bother with sound - it’s just smiles and trivia.

It begins icy blonde with Nadja, Karen Mulder and Elle, then come Naomi, Christy, Helena Carla Bruni, and then it finishes with Eva Herzigova doing an impersonation of Marilyn Monroe.

We don’t know if we just described the video, or some kind of culinary dish, but here goes…

Fall Ads All Suped up

eva herzigova in louis vuitton.jpgToday’s WWD had a long article on what they’re calling the ‘return of the supermodel”.

We’ve sensed for a while that there’s definitely been a shift back to the unique women of the 90’s rather than models that we can sometimes barely tell apart.

But the article brings up something of note: that the design houses giving these women (“girls” just doesn’t seem quite right here) are mostly European with the exception (so far) of DSquared, which is designed by two brothers from Canada.

Do we have a problem with older women in America?

Try not to laugh at that.

Make it a Plait

christyinchanel.jpgNatalie and I have both depended on Heidi braids to make it through humid New York summers.

The 60 second up-do is the only way, or at least the only chic way, to guarantee all of our long hair stays out of our face and off of our neck.

We never understood why Sienna Miller received such negative reviews for, among other things, pulling her wispy blonde hair up into the same look.

Now it seems the criticism has dissipated and pretty girls everywhere are catching on to the easiest and cutest way to wear long hair.

We’ve spotted Mamie Gummer, Lauren Conrad, a random fashionista at Style.com’s party, and Christy Turlington (for Chanel) with Heidi braids atop their heads - and that’s just this week, it’s not even summer yet!

So if your hair’s not long enough, start using horse shampoo, forego monthly trims, and please, please, please don’t stick a fake braid on your crown.

Donna Karan, Woman of the Year

donna dress.jpg

People says George Clooney is the sexiest man alive (sure).

Time says the most important person of the year is you (cool).

And Glamour?

They’ve submitted their pick for Woman of the Year, and it’s fashion phenom Donna Karan.

In Glamour’s glossy salute to Donna, industry titans like Calvin Klein and Christy Turlington praise the designer for her savvy business decisions, her commitment to charity and the arts, and the way her skin is always glowing but never over-tanned.

For her fabulous accomplishments, Karan gets to sit front row at Monday night’s Women of the Year Awards, and listen to Mariah Carey sing. She’ll be wearing a Donna dress, if she knows what’s good for her…

Glamour’s full article on Donna will be released on Monday night; but you can read it right now by clicking below.

I’m Gonna Be a Supermodel…

you want to v me.jpgDo you think you have what it takes to be the next Christy Turlington? Or at least the next Behati Prinsloo?

V magazine and modeling agency Supreme are here to help.

They’re running a web-based modeling search through November 1st. It’s both slightly more democratic and a whole lot cooler than ANTM:

Anyone can uphold her photos to the site, where you can cast your vote. The popular vote winner will get her own online editorial, and a judging panel including Calvin Klein designer Francisco Costa will pick five finalists to come to New York and do test photos and go sees. The winner will get an editorial in V’s print edition, a three year contract with Supreme, and $5,000 worth of Calvin Klein clothes.

Supreme is an agency with major clout, so there’s a chance that the girl who wins this contest might end up on the runway for Marc…not the Snoopy fashion show (like Jaslene).

We read the fine print so you don’t have to:

You have to be at least 13, between 5’7” and 5’11”, and a legal resident of Russia, Latvia, Estonia, the UK, Canada, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, Brazil, or the States. And if you’re a Canadian resident, you have to “correctly answer a mathematical skill-testing question” in order to be eligible to receive the prize.

So, Ukranians and those who opted out of calculus are of out of luck. Even if they’re skinny and pretty.

Life is so unfair sometimes.
