Fashion Is Fun

It Looks Like the Road to Heaven…

In case you’ve been under a fashion rock this week, you know that tonight’s the night for the taping of the big Victoria’s Secret show. You may have also heard the rumor that some of the Angels are going to be recreating George Michael’s supremely awesome “Freedom ‘90” video for the occasion.

Now, we love Doutzen, Chanel, Miranda, et al. But seriously nothing will ever top this MTV supermodel explosion.

Naomi dancing in the sheer black top! Cindy in the tub! Christy and the sheet dress! Tatjana in the animal print! Super blonde Linda in that delicious oversized sweater! Throw in the jukebox and jacket from “Faith” burning and you’ve got yourself a video masterpiece.

So before it happens (or doesn’t) we thought we’d give you a little reminder of the original. And this song never fails to brighten a day. Though we’ll always contend that sometimes the clothes do indeed make the man. Just sayin’.

Quote of the Day

“I don’t want to stand next to a 20-year-old on the runway, even if people say you can still do it. It is like, ‘Why would I do that to myself?’ It would just make me depressed.” —Cindy Crawford tells StyleList why she quit the catwalk.

London’s Burning

cindy omega.jpg“Geez”, muttered a friend Wednesday night. We’re standing in a jam packed club - not even a famous one - heaving with human traffic and queueing for £14 drinks. “What recession?”

Indeed what recession — it’s certainly not in London. After a manic LFW, one would expect everything to calm down for a moment, for the money and champagne to stop flowing. Instead, we’ve experienced a pent up demand to party - and wear the clothes \ we so innocently bought during fashion month.

The action’s hot and heavy: this week alone saw the bash celebrating the Juicy Couture store opening (which shares a block with Matthew Williamson & Stella’s store), the Tatler 300th anniversary party and the Vogue/Bulgari party. Last night, Alasdhair Willis (Stella’s husband), threw an intimate do at his Duke Street gallery, while Cindy Crawford launched her Omega collection at the Almada club (where Anna Wintour made her LFW date with Chris Kane). The latter drew the most stars yet including Lily Allen, Rosie Huntingdon Whiteley and Jasmine Guinness whilst Rhys Ifan flirted outrageously with model du jour, Tolula Adeyemi.

Rebecca Minkoff Loves the 90's

rebeccaminkoff 009.jpgRebecca Minkoff presented her first totally complete ready-to-wear apparel collection, along with her handbags yesterday at the Metropolitan Pavilion.

The collection was influenced by “early Tim Burton films” as well as the “90’s beauty aesthetic.” Her inspiration is clear - the black, white, and prison striped pieces are very Nightmare Before Christmas, and I can absolutely see the leopard and floral numbers on Clueless’ Cher, or even early 1990’s Cindy Crawford.

While I can’t say that her rock-chic pieces were especially directional - the shoulder pads, leather, and stud/buckle accents are nothing new - they were both wearable and cute. Her body-conscious minidresses, accented with corset-shapes and lace, are perfect for a night out, while her fun, feminine separates are appropriate for day.

Judging by the wild success of her handbag line, Rebecca’s collection has potential to become the go-to for easy pieces that appeal to uptown and downtown girls alike.

Notes from London & St. Trop: Foodie Edition

lilyallenkatemosslilagrace.jpgWhere have all the fashionably fabulous people gone? St. Tropez, that’s where. Kate, Lila Grace, Leo, editors, designers. They’re here on hols where I am also quite lucky to be with my family. Post-beach they can often be found having a nibble at the resto we tried last night. I highly recommend it.

We treated ourselves to La Petite Maison (actually an hour away in Nice), a famed restaurant where they take their food very seriously. Some may know it because Gwyneth Paltrow raves about it on GOOP. I called for reservations and was told “No madam, we are booked until the end of the month.” It would probably help greatly if I was a bold-face name. But instead, I simply used my old London trick: just show up. And voila — a table for five right there and then.

Was it worth it? Yes. Pretentious? A little. The waiter bragged about Elton coming there all the time, and we did spot a gaggle of famous people, most notably Leo DiCaprio and Cindy Crawford.

Meanwhile back in London…

Magazine Whore

drew barrymore on janes first cover.jpgIf you, like us, are obsessed with magazines, welcome to phase one of the best project ever.

A friend just sent us a link to Premier Issues, a site that’s taken it upon itself to scan in debut covers of all the magazines they can get their hands on. They have obvious ones like LOVE, but hard to find, nostalgia-inducing covers, too like Cindy Crawford on the cover of George, Courtney Love on Flaunt, Drew Barrymore for Jane, Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey on Teen Vogue.

Most of the covers come with Letter from the Editor text and hopefully, soon, scans of the rest of the magazine.

For now, here’s this, from Jane Pratt in Jane’s first issue, “Drew said, ‘If you put anyone else on your first cover, I’ll kill you.’ Seriously, having one of my most beloved people on the front of the premiere issue is overwhelmingly wonderful,” because we still miss it every day.

I Want My MTV

cindycrawfordhouseofstyle.jpgAs much as pop culture invades every part of fashion these days, we’re not usually the go-to site for MTV coverage. But this WWD retrospective got me thinking about all the fashion-y things I’ve loved and lost on the once very stylin’ network over the years.

Of course, there were the awesome first two incarnations of House of Style which furthered my youthful obsession with models. Cindy was beyond. And I regularly dreamed about being best friends with Shalom and Amber.

But there were so many other style moments that seem to be missing in this era of Lauren, Heidi, et al. Perhaps because it’s hard to even catch a video on the channel.

Because its not like the entire music industry has lost it’s style, just that MTV kinda has.

Model Slash Move On

kate moss topshop tea dress.jpgOur world is full of model slash something iterations.

The original, and most common, would be model slash actress: Lauren Hutton, Cybill Sheppard, Cindy Crawford, Elle MacPherson et al. Then came model slash photographer: Ellen von Unwerth, Helena Christensen, Iekeline Stange, ad nauseam. Now we’ve been blessed with a stash of model slash designers which brings us to our point.

To the pretty faces out there making dresses, please spare us from yet another slew of wannabe vintage floral tea dresses. You know who you are, the Gail Elliots, Milla Jovovichs, Erin Wassons and Kate Mosses of the world.

Miss Moss, your Topshop disasters have reached cringe-worthy status. The ditzy, daffodil covered, forties style, matronly, smocks without a dash of cool belong in the back of musty thrift stores, not on high street racks. And you can throw as many super cool Balmain blazers on top of the floral frocks as you like but you’re still a lamb in sheep’s clothing - especially since we know you ordered eight key pieces from Poltock and Walsh this season. Nary a flower in sight, just edgy leopard prints, sharp shoulders and a heavy dose of sexy.

Come on girls, leave the designing to Alexander McQueen. Model slash model can’t be so bad.

House of Style Returns

The 90’s television revivals aren’t stopping at 90210 and Absolutely Fabulous. No, House of Style’s jumping on the trend, too.

The Post reports that the MTV show that made Cindy Crawford America’s sweetheart is back for a second try, and the producers already have their sights set on Chanel Iman and Bar Rafaeli (who already has some experience with camera crews) as hosts.

Assuming the show will be the same format of fashion and design information brought to Americans via cute girls, we’re betting it’ll be a hit, especially with those that want to further understand the decade they were born in, which is pretty much MTV’s target audience these days anyway.

In the meantime, please enjoy Cindy and Niki, at left.

One of These Is Not Like The Others

i wanna be a supermodel.jpgWe went to tap off Taxi TV this morning when we saw Cindy Crawford walking down a runway and were like, “Whoa.”

And then we watched her entire Raymour and Flanigan furniture commercial. She talked about how fashion used to be her life but now function’s more important and while she’ll always have a place in her heart for the industry that made her super famous, she’s way more concerned with furniture design these days.

And then we started thinking about how Cindy Crawford’s kind of always been around and her face has been in like every single commercial/ad since she stopped landing Vogue covers. Which made us wonder, if she’d just disappeared for a bit, could she be hawking things like Prada and DSquared and Chanel instead of denim-covered couches?

Cindy’s arguably the richest, best known name of the supers, but she’s also the only one seriously lacking high fashion cred - we’ll take a moment to acknowledge her amazing November 08 French Vogue spread, but just because Carine missed her doesn’t mean designers are going to write a huge paycheck to put their clothes on her when she’s the face of a million products - and we wonder if that bothers her.

If you were a super, would you rather be a Cindy or a Linda?

I Don’t Care What My Teachers Say, I’m Gonna Be A Supermodel

So, it’s officially 90’s flashback day, and we couldn’t be more excited. And what could be greater than supers backstage?

Here, Yasmin Lebon (yes like Simon from Duran Duran) is a new mommy, Naomi hates wearing clothes, and everyone is wearing swimsuits that would make Rosa Cha blush.

Did we mention this is from House of Style? Oh yeah, and Cindy Crawford is hosting!

Now if only Daria would interview Stam and Gemma at Marc, our lives would be complete.

Coco Speaks, Part Deux

It used to be impossible to hear your favorite models speak, unless of course you were so embedded in the fashion crowd that your best friends had names like Linda and Cindy.

But now that snippets of Tanya, Daria, Coco and co. keep popping up on the internet, we can’t get enough.

Miss Rocha sat down for an interview at Toronto’s Fashion Week last night, and, well, we like her more with each and every word.

She says hi and waves to herself on TV, exaggerates her vowels, and maybe even makes a dig at Karlie Kloss’ death walk, all in good fun of course.

Now if only Ali would film a video at her local rodeo.

Naomi: Mentor?

Naomi Campbell short hair.jpgHarold Tillman, the new chairman of the British Fashion Council, has given his first big proclamation since entering his new position about one week ago:

The fashion industry’s newer models need mentors to help look after them.

Tillman’s first suggestion? Naomi Campbell, explaining that the 90’s supermodels (like Cindy Crawford), are the kind of models that the younger girls idolize.

We’re not sure what kind of advice Naomi could give to a 15-year old girl.

Lessons in aim? How to look cute during community service?

Bollywood: Coming to America?

Suneet 7.JPG “Movies are next to religion in India,” said Suneet Varma yesterday.

The go-to designer for every Bollywood actress has outfitted India’s most glam for decades, dressing socialites and stars for every major wedding in India (and even one in Versailles,) and styling everyone from Aishwarya Rai on the cover of Vogue India (out next month,) to Cindy Crawford for Omega.

Now Varma gears up for another high-spangled event:

The Bollywood Music and Fashion Awards, which happen on Saturday. Held in Atlantic City, the festival celebrates the jewel-toned explosion of music, movies, and incredibly gorgeous girls that define the sparkly film genre - and the Indian designer is one of its defining aesthetes.

Tips, the Blockbuster-y Bollywood production house, has just signed Suneet as the exclusive costume designer of three developing films to be released next year, the first of which will feature mega-star Bipasha Basu.

And Suneet may soon become a household name in America, since he’s currently in talks to dress some Hollywood actresses for the Oscars (the rumor goes: blonde, thin, amazingly funny).

Is this the year that Carolina Herrera and Valentino get overthrown on the red carpet by a little bit of Bombay?

Lydia Hearst Hearts Nars!

00180m.jpg
Lydia Hearst is the only heiress with her own Style.com archive - and now she’s booked a beauty campaign.

The Manhattan native is the newest face of NARS, which counts Cindy Crawford, Alek Wek, and Guinevere Van Seenus as past muses.

We should have guessed Lydia was linked with the line - and its enigmatic creator, Francois Nars - this summer, when the two appeared together at an event for Henri Bendel. Now the designer confesses that he’s snapped Lydia himself, a move reminiscent of how Karl Lagerfeld does his own photography.

But did the aspiring writer - a new columnist for Page Six Magazine - get to hang out on Nars’ private Polynesian island?

And will she get a lip gloss named after her, or settle instead for one of Nars’ classic shades, like Multiple Orgasm?

Burberry Imports American Girls

083107_05b.jpg
Racks of Burberry trenches hit our shores each year - now Christopher Bailey wants us to return the favor.

The checked designer was in Chicago last week for a Burberry fashion show, and the local models used on his runway made quite an impression -

According to Time Out Chicago, Bailey booked several of them for his Milan runway next month.

Stranger discoveries have certainly happened, and remember that Cindy Crawford developed in Chicago 20 years ago - it’s also Erin Heatherton’s hometown.

Who’s next?

Maybe Shaletta Porterfield from Ford - Andre Leon Talley reportedly called the Vogue home office about her, and today, WWD runs a photo of her storming the Burberry show.

Look out, Milan!

Elite Models Makes Hair Dryers

marisa.jpg Kate Moss has a clothing line and Cindy Crawford lisences couches, so why shouldn’t a model agency make their own hair care line?

This month, Elite Models announces a new partnership with Rowenta, the appliance company sold at Sears. They’re launching a series of 8 hair styling tools like flat irons and hot brushes, all inspired by the glamour and carefully crafted beauty of Elite Models.

Will using their new “Jumbo Tong for Large Curls” make you look like Elite’s Coco Rocha, Darla Baker, or Marisa Miller, who’s staring at you on the left?

Maybe not, but hopefully one of those girls will be pictured on the box.

Also: Elite has a blog!

Vogue Sees Double

vogues.jpg
The current issue of British Vogue looks awfully familiar, because it’s something of a time warp.

The cover features a handful of major models from various decades, positioned in white oxford shirts on white wooden ladders.

But this isn’t the first time Vogue has snapped this scene:

Their American counterpart shot the famous 100th anniversary issue in the same vein, with old-school supermodels like Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington posed on the ladders now occupied by Lily Cole and Jacquetta Wheeler.

The irony:

This cover is called “the age issue,” and indeed, readers can date its main image back to 1992, when Lily Cole was a toddler and Vogue did it the first time!
