So, About Those Shoes…

daphne mcqueen.jpgLast night, at a party in honor of Francois Nars’ new book and the 15th Anniversary of Nars, I finally spoke to Daphne Guinness.

I’d been standing there staring at her Alexander McQueen shoes and her awe-inspiring beehive and barely looked away long enough to realize that Marc’s kilt is actually just a pair of shorts with a panel in front, a skort, if you will, when I just reached out and said, “Excuse me,” I had to know how much her shoes weighed.

“They’re quite light actually,” she answered.

“Is the top part hollow,” I asked.

“Hmm…I can’t be quite sure. They’re lighter than…um, lighter than…”

“The ones from the runway?”

“Oh no! These are the ones from the runway.”

“Right. Duh.”

“They’re less weighty than the Nina Ricci’s. Does that help?”

“Yes totally!” I thanked her, though of course I have no idea how much the Nina Ricci’s weigh and she’s actually the only person in the world who’s worn both shoes in real not-on-the-runway life. But you can’t help but worship a woman who measures her life in Ricci.

Quote of the Day

“I’ve always been known for my scent, if it was in high school, or in the lifeguard truck (‘Where can I get that scent for my wife?’)…I’ve been offered fragrance contracts like everyone else and their dog (hey, that’s that good idea, all natural, of course) but all the elements never came together—the stamp of approval from PETA; the environmental aspects. (I was a bit ahead of my time). But now it works!” —Apparent scent guru Pamela Anderson to Allure on her new perfumes, Malibu and Malibu Nights. We’re gonna go ahead and stick with Daphne Guinness.

Spring 2010 Paris

Streetwalker: The Lone Prep

paris ss10 streetwalker 1 pull.jpgTanya Jones, 27, Stylist from Milan

Got her: Sitting pretty at Gareth Pugh. It’s the first big Paris show, so everyone’s happy.

Stalked her: Her stripes, boyfriend blazer and tortoiseshell glasses were effortless prep, but that red lip gave her a much needed edge.

Shot her: Because amongst all the Rihanna and Daphne Guinness and crazy London cool kid mayhem at Gareth, she stood out as being very relaxed about it all.

She said: “I just arrived in Paris today, so this is my traveling outfit, it’s comfy, it’s jersey. This is not a look for a show.”

We said: If that isn’t a look, then we are doing something seriously wrong.

daphneguinessdavidlachapelleshoot.jpgSign Us Up: Now this sounds like an epic shoot. Daphne Guinness, David LaChappelle, an 18 acre former nudist colony in Maui, and bathtubs in trees. Very good times. {Fashionologie}

Lay Lady Lay: Rachel Zoe is apparently my music twin. Her iTunes playlist is pretty much my most-played songs rotation. A hippie who immediately equates an REM song with 90210 and also swoons for Chris Martin singing “Green Eyes”? Nice. Now if only we had similar clothing budgets. {The Zoe Report}

It’s A Beautiful Life: Nina Garcia’s IMDB listing just got a little longer. Ashton signed her up for a guest spot on the The Beautiful Life. Maybe Mischa could benefit from some of her tough love. Let’s hope they had a sit-down. {FWD}

WWD: How would you describe your style?
Daphne Guinness: Regular. Stuff that fits.

Going, Going, Sold!

stevenkleinphotoforauction.jpgYou gotta love a day when you get to namecheck Candy Pratts Price, not once, but twice.

The Style.com Fashion Director is co-chairing a major charity event in the Hamptons on August 15th for the Ellen P. Hermanson Breast Health Center at Southampton Hospital. Stella McCartney, Daphne Guinness, Steven Klein and André Balazs are also on the invite.

The cheapest tickets are $250 which isn’t all that crazy for a New York charity party. But, of course, you’ll need to be in the Hamptons.

Not to fear, there’s another awesome component: an online auction going on now until August 25th.

Head Games

118629.jpgHeads are so hot right now. This summer, it started with the resurgence of the hat. Over the past few years, we’ve heard people asking, “Why doesn’t anyone wear hats anymore…like men in the fifties…like Humphrey Bogart? It’s so classy!”

Enter Mad Men, to show that yes, those hats were damn classy. Sometimes people just need a little boost to start wearing a new (or new/old) trend. Though currently the look is less business and more casual - it’s not just for company presidents and Hollywood stars.

But The Clothes…

our favorite cfda oufits 09.jpgThe Oscars are safe.

Starlets choose something long, something pretty, something with a jewel on top. But our Oscars, the CFDAs, are a celebration of all things fashion with a capital ‘F’ which means we get to choose best dressed, not US Weekly.

Smell the Couture

daphneguinnessfragrance.jpegDaphne Guinness is, in our opinion, one of the coolest women on the planet. And come September we’ll be able to own just a little piece of her when her first fragrance, Daphne, is finally available.

Frankly, at the just announced price $140, it’s probably the only bit of her we’ll ever be able to afford. But we’ll take it.

These days it feels like everyone and their sister has a fragrance and most of them don’t make one bit of sense to us. We’re talking to you, Paris Hilton and Kim Kardashian.

So it’s refreshing to see a woman who is a true arbiter of style, with a very signature presence, creating her own scent.

Guinness tells WWD, ““For me, [scent] is time travel. It takes you away from the everyday and you are transported to something in your past. It’s a very mysterious thing. It’s magic.”

We wholeheartedly agree and can’t wait to transport ourselves into the land of Guinness, even if just for a moment.

Daphne is Not Doing POP

daphne guinness looking serious.jpgIf Daphne Guinness sounded like she was distancing herself from the POP project after the world pretty much laughed at Dasha Zhukova’s appointment as editor-in-chief, it’s because she, apparently, really was.

Yesterday, in regards to her involvement with POP, she told Derek Blasberg that she would like to “emphasize that I’m completely neutral here—I’m a free agent! Fashion is my family and I love everyone just the same.” It sounded weird, but ok.

And now today, she’s blogged on the Starworks site that “it was so FUNNY to read on the web that I am on the new board of POP Magazine with Dasha Zhukova and my friend Ashley Heath. It was flattering but not true I am afraid. It came as a complete surprise. A complete misunderstanding! That is the nature of the web.”

Guess the web - er, the Guardian, actually - got it wrong…

Marios Schwab Goes 3-D, Sort Of

marios schwab aw09 .jpgMarios Schwab’s stiff white invitation was embedded with squares of red and blue film to make a handy pair of 3-D glasses.

It was also at the Topshop venue, which means food. So I hauled myself to the University of Westminster - in the battle of hunger versus exhaustion, the former almost always wins - and, despite last season’s disappointing show, absolutely loved Schwab’s Fall 09 collection.

I also loved watching Daphne Guinness in the front row - watching the way that woman dresses and conducts herself is like watching an editorial come to life, a really great one.

Anyway, Schwab’s dresses were beautifully built, creative and colorful - so much color this fall. It’s like he started with shifts and constructed frames around them, folding and dipping fabric to position the basic dress within a sort of shell. The bold prints stood on their own, without help from the 3-D glasses. In fact, everyone lifted their invite at the first sign of a psychedelic print, shook their head and put it down. You didn’t want anything in the way of you and these clothes.

And that was only the second show of the best day of the season.

Daphne Guinness, Vogue Italia Cover Girl

st_auction1.jpg Today we heard that Daphne Guinness will grace the cover of the imminent new Vogue Italia’s Couture Supplement, thanks to Steven Klein.

It sounds really exciting and interesting, especially since Daphne’s vibe matches the prim-goth vibe threading through Fall, thanks to Prada’s high-necked black lace and all the black lip gloss and pretty much any mention of Balenciaga ever.

It’s also fun because Daphne Guinness is chic, interesting, intelligent, imaginative… and over forty.

And in a world where 27-year-old Gisele Bundchen gets bumped from a lingerie campaign because she’s “too old,” that’s a very cool thing.

We’re looking forward to it, Ms. Guinness.
