Okay, not to beat the dead horse on perfume. But when we read in WWD that both Demi Moore and Fergie are launching fragrances, we must write something.
Let’s start with Fergie. I will fully admit that as much as I wanted to hate Fergie Ferg, The Dutchess had some really catchy ass songs on it. “Big Girls Don’t Cry”, anyone? Do I ever, ever think I want to smell like her? That would be a big old no.
So Avon, I’m not really getting where you’re coming from. Reese, I get. This…not even one little bit. Also, will it have a name as inane and meaningless as Black Eyed Peas lyrics have become? Seriously if there is one called Boom Boom and one called Pow, I can’t be held responsible for my actions.
Despite this week’s rescue attempts, Escada filed bankruptcy in a German court this morning.
The label, which was founded in 1978 has been better known as the target of the anti-fur movement than for its clothes these past few years. Aside from the red asymmetrical dress Katherine Heigl wore to the Oscars two years ago, and an occasional number on Demi Moore, it’s dropped largely out of the limelight which can’t help its cause when asking for financial salvation.
According to Bloomberg, the brand was once the largest women’s clothing brand in the world. Today, over 2,200 people will lose their jobs as a result of the bankruptcy and the company’s unlikely recovery.
While it’s difficult to watch such a formerly strong brand fail, we’re still impressed that so few high fashion labels have reached that point.
Adventures in Copyright: 2 Downtown Bags, 1 Uptown Price
There are certain places we expect to see rip-offs of Stams, Goyards, Balenciaga motorcycle bags etc. - like the carts on Broadway in Soho for $40, not on not well-respected shopping sites selling for almost $1000.
The bag on the far left, by Italian designer Giorgio Brato, is great - roomy, simple, basic. We like it.
But we’ve been liking it for almost two years - since YSL debuted the Downtown Bag and everyone from Demi Moore to half of the Upper East Side slung it over their shoulder.
The Downtown’s shape, both chic and large, is very distinct - it’s the reason we found it appealing in the first place. Brato’s version might lack the three gold buttons and side buckles from the YSL, but it’s essentially the same bag, and yet for only a couple of hundred dollars less - why buy the knock-off when you can actually afford the original?
The bag’s web page says, “Please note: Each Giorgio Brato creation is a unique work of art.”
We beg to differ.
Shirley Maclaine will play Coco Chanel in an upcoming biopic, and it just gets weirder:
The project is a Lifetime TV miniseries, which chronicles Chanel’s later years returning to Paris, after exiling herself in Germany and Switzerland during World War II.
According to Variety, the project is completely endorsed by both Chanel and Karl Lagerfeld, with costume designer Stefano de Nardis even getting archival research from the company.
The program will run next year on Lifetime. Meanwhile, the Chanel feature-length movie, Coco Avant Chanel, has begun production in Paris, with Audrey Tautou as the lead.
Demi Moore is still rumored to be in talks for an American Chanel movie, and we think that would be fantastic - but Angelina Jolie would be cool for the part, too.
We’re not sure we believe this tip, but we certainly like it:
We hear Rumer Willis will be attending some select shows at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in February.
The Rumer rumor certainly makes sense, as Ms. Willis will take the stage as Ms. Golden Globe in January - a position often undertaken by Hollywood aristoquettes looking to break into movies.
Having photos snapped at Rag & Bone or Temperley would definitely help a public profile get raised, without any scandal, seduction, or shocking pregnancy (ahem).
If Rumer does attend New York Fashion Week in February, we hope two things:
1. That she takes tips from her mom, Demi Moore, on front-row posing, since last season, Demi was a total pro.
2. That she gets rid of her hair extensions and goes back to the bob. It was so, so chic.
WWD is all excited about the Gucci / UNICEF auction, and with good reason. While they raise funds for Malawi orphans, they’ll also raise their own profile with Madonna, Drew Barrymore, Adrien Brody, Salma Hayek, Alicia Keys, Demi Moore, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rihanna, and Sting.
But the party takes place on Wednesday, February 6th in New York City - and that’s smack in the middle of Fashion Week.
If all of these stars are in town during Tent season, does that mean they’ll actually show up for some shows?
We doubt Madonna will attend anything, and after sitting dangerously close to the photo pits in Paris this Fall, we can’t really blame her.
But if we were betting girls, and sometimes we are, we’d say a definite seat filler in February will be Lucy Liu (who will need tons of PR for her new TV show, Lipstick Cashmere Jungle Fight (isn’t that the name?).
Demi might return to subtly brag (again) that she just looks better with age. It would be fun to see her again, even though we don’t know which big magazine is left to interview her (maybe W?).
And Drew Barrymore?
Well, we doubt it, but there’s always wishing on stars… or in this case, wishing on Chris Benz’s inspiration board.
When we saw Bergdorf Goodman fashion director Roopal Patel in YSL’s splatter paint dress, we were so excited.
The dress is age appropriate for almost everyone. The shape flatters almost every body type. The pattern is fresh and exciting without being overbearing. In short, the whole thing was cool.
So cool, in fact, that the outfit’s already happened.
Intern Britt pointed out that in June, Demi Moore wore the YSL splatter paint dress in Los Angeles, when Stefano Pilati paid a visit to the Hollywood Hills to present his latest resort collection.
We love the way both women wear the dress, because it’s an amazing dress, but who wears it better?
(Actually, better question - if we bought a white shift at H&M, and some good acrylic paint at Lee Art Supplies, could we make the same one?)
