My iPhone, My Vocabulary

the iphone is just so pretty.jpgYesterday, while texting, we made a discovery.

We, like everyone else, already knew that iPhone has some issues with spell checking more uncommon words. But when we texted “chanel” to a friend, our iPhone turned it into “Chanel.” Impressed, we tried some more, and learned that iPhone has some eclectic taste.

iPhone knows to correct / capitalize: Chanel, Jacobs (but not Marc), Burberry, Stella McCartney, Alexander Wang, Alberta (but not Ferretti), Calvin Klein, Versace, Dior, Stuart (but not Jill), Halston, Hermes (though, in fairness, it also knows “Aphrodite”), Posen (but it turns “zac” into “sac”), Erin (but not Fetherston).

It did not know: Chloe, Gucci, Prada, Louis or Vuitton, Vogue, ELLE (in fact, it turned “ELLE” into “role”), Visionaire, Matthew or Williamson, Martin Margiela, Coach, Balmain, Balenciaga, Lacroix, Yves Saint Laurent, Mizrahi, Galliano, Gaultier, and it turned Hedi into “Jedi”, though we could go on (we did).

It’s Friday. Have fun.

Isaac at & on Barnes & Noble

Some fun news for those of you as obsessed with Isaac Mizrahi’s VLogs as we are:

To promote his new book, How to Have Style, Isaac will be doing a a VLog on the Barnes & Noble Studio page this coming Monday, and it’ll stay there all week in honor of B&N’s Fall Fashion segments. Enjoy the clip at left, and here’s to hoping he’s as prickly with the host through the whole five-minute video as he is here.

And bonus if you live near us: Isaac himself will be making an appearance at the B&N on Fifth Ave (near 46th) on October 7th at 6pm. We know you’re probably supposed to bring copies of How to Have Style for him to sign, but we suspect there’ll be a crowd in the back with copies of Unzipped instead…

See you out there.

New Yorker Talk: Homework

new yorker outfit.jpgThe New Yorker’s put together a slide show of the work of the three designers who’ll represent fashion’s emerging talent at this Saturday’s “The Next Generation of Fashion” talk, part of their yearly Festival.

The three fledgling designers - Joeri Van Yper, Louise Markey, and Makoto Takada - will be available for commentary / questions after the panel, and so we recommend (this is the New Yorker, after all) brushing up and at least checking out the ten clicks-long slideshow of their work.

Otherwise, you’ll probably just end up doodling in your notebook the whole time. In which case, please send all clever examples to tips@fashionista.com. Thanks.

Have You Heard About Kloset?

kloset pull.jpgI have this dress that I’m obsessed with - it’s kind of tiny, with a bright floral print on the slightly tulip-ed skirt, and a cream bustier-ish top that’s tight enough to let you get away without a bra. It has detachable suspender-like straps, and huge hidden pockets at the hips. Clearly, it’s way too special for words, especially since the most typical reaction I get is “Oohh I love that!” followed by “Where’s it from?”

So here it is - One of the best small designers I’ve ever come across is Mollika Ruangkritya, the mastermind designer in Thailand behind what is possibly the most charming label ever, Kloset.

For now, her only stores are in Bangkok, and US stores have only just started carrying her designs. But I highly suggest keeping the name in the back of your head for the next time you need something whimsical, funny, incredibly detailed, and utterly different from what everyone around you is wearing.

A few choice looks after the jump - (couldn’t you see that musical notes dress on Blair? Paging Eric Daman…)

“Poetry! Sheer Poetry! A+++++”

post secret designer theft.jpgEvery Monday morning, we do the same thing:

Toast an English Muffin, pour some coffee and check Post Secret, a blog of people’s mailed-in secrets scrawled on post cards that updates every Sunday. We’ve only been doing this for a couple months, just since a reader sent in the cutest secret we’d ever read.

So imagine our delight when there was another fashion (at least, we think) related post card this week, but this time of a much less cute feel.

Guess those Parsons kids better watch their backs…

Who Doesn’t Have a Diffusion Line?

Proenza For Target The Daily just broke the news that Lisa Salzer, of the line Lulu Frost, is doing her own jewelry for Urban Outfitters. Lisa follows Steven Alan, Anna Sheffield (Bing Bang), and Charlotte Ronson in that plight.

Meanwhile, Comme des Garcons is doing H&M’s line this Fall, Richard Chai is next up at Target (followed by Jonathan Saunders), and Topshop just scored Nicholas Kirkwood as a New Gen designer for Fall.

The whole thing led to a sort of game: Who doesn’t have a diffusion line? We scrolled down Style.com’s designer list, and came up with a list of the designers most likely to pair with a big brand next:

Adam Lippes - His price points are a little low to be making clothes, but we feel like he’s the next big thing for Payless, following in Alice + Olivia and Abaete’s footsteps.

Chris Benz - Please, the boy is screaming Target commercial (and muses Eva Amurri and Kim Stolz can star).

Derek Lam - Target!

D Sqaured - H&M, but their collection might be so colorful that it could turn into a Cavalli redux. Some girls really shouldn’t wear hot pink mini dresses, you know?

D & G - H & M. Bathing suits. Can’t you see it?

Galliano - Why H&M hasn’t stolen him yet is beyond us. Does Dior have a contract clause about that?

Giles Deacon - Topshop. Still hasn’t happened. Why?

Marchesa - Can definitely see them with Target, especially because of their CFDA ties.

Matthew Williamson - Target! Chiffon! Yes!

McQueen - If H&M can get Lagerfeld, they can get him.

Peter Som - Target.

Rag + Bone - Target, but Topshop would be silly if they didn’t at least consider snagging them for their first American designer diffusion line.

And we’d love to see Ruffian on this list, but they told Faran that they’d never do a mass-market line because it contradicts the handmade ethos of their clothes. It would be cool if they reconsidered, though.

Mooka Kinney Gets a SATC Wardrobe Credit, Splits Up

Mooka Kinney This may only matter to Refinery 29 staffers, but here goes:

Last night at the Men.Style.com party (or should we call it Lohan-gate?), designer Alison Lewis said she’d split with her design partner, Rachel Antonoff.

The two 26-year-olds were the chicks behind Mooka Kinney, the indie jumper label best known for getting a romper on Lily Donaldson during a summer paparazzi shoot.

They also have a dress on Carrie Bradshaw in the upcoming Sex and the City movie, which we’re seeing tonight at a screening (we’ll let you know…).

Alison will be merging with jewelry designer Samantha House on her new label, called Lewis + House.

Marchesa Girls Get Some Lipsticks

georgina chapman face.jpgIs getting a lipstick named after you the new replacement for getting your own bag?

Stila’s following in the footsteps of Behnaz Sarafpour/Gucci Westman and Tinsley/Dior, and giving the Marchesa girls their own lipstick shades.

After doing the makeup for Marchesa’s last four seasons, Stila’s finally let Georgina and Keren try their hand at picking out some colors for the face.

The Georgina will be a sheer red, the Keren’s a nude color, and the very fall-appropriate berry is named after Talia Shobrook, the makeup artist who helped create Backstage Beauty Collection, the limited-edition line Stila’s made using the colors from Marchesa’s Fall 2008 show.

The Marchesa lipsticks are permanent additions for Stila, retailing at $22 each.

Look for them in seriously every magazine ever come August - Stila is a well-known beauty editor favorite.

People Are Talking

Heatherette Break-Up: Bogus?

heatherette duo.jpgWe all know there’s been a ton of rumors lately that Richie Rich and Traver Rains are walking on separate yellow brick roads these days, but some recent developments might prove otherwise -

First, the glitter boys shot a prom-themed spread for ELLEgirl with Lydia Hearst right after the rumors of their demise swirled Gossip Girl-style all over the internet.

Now, we’ve learned that they’re flying out to LA with Paper Magazine today as special guests at Playboy’s Playmate of the Year Luncheon since they custom designed the winning bunny’s dress - and we were told this by a concerned Heatherette fan that wanted to help “squash the rumors.”

So now the real question is - are these one-time events for the sake of the good old days?

Or can we all expect a blowout show in September?

Karl: Officially a Character

meta karl.jpgHe’s got his own teddy bear, a lead figurine, a vinyl Kidrobot - so what would be the next logical move?

A character in a video game, of course.

But not just any video game - Karl Lagerfeld’s likeness will soon appear as a radio DJ in teen boy favorite Grand Theft Auto.

The game’s in stores April 29, so you’ll have to wait a little bit to find out if any of the “politically incorrect dialogue” the game writers included (and that Karl so loved) made it into the final cut. We imagine him saying stuff like, “If you hadn’t stopped at D&D earlier you might be able to cruise through that hairpin turn a little faster” or whatever.

In other Meta-Karl news, reader Emily sent us an old Adult Swim clip we somehow missed from Metalocalypse - she thinks the fashion designer in question was drawn to look like Karl.

What do you guys think?

Rei for H&M

christian siriano's comme shoes.jpgWere you wondering who would follow up Karl, Stella and Viktor & Rolf as H&M’s next guest designer this fall?

Wonder no more - H&M announced this morning that Rei Kawakubo will design the next capsule collection, after the mega chain opens its first store in Tokyo this November.

We think this is great, because we can’t imagine another scenario in which we could afford anything designed by Rei, but we’re also a little worried - the collection is supposed to include clothes for both men and women (obviously), accessories (fine), children’s clothing (uh), and a perfume (oof).

We’re already sincerely hoping that Rei doesn’t just put out a bunch of belts with studs and baby shoes that look like Christian’s Comme kicks (at left), and actually provides college kids across the world with the fashion-forward choices they wish they could afford.

Guess we’ll see which way this one goes.

Rachel Bilson for DKNY

rachel bilson portrait.jpgIt looks like close friends aren’t the only people that trust Rachel Bilson to design clothes - now a major company is putting their faith in her, too.

Rachel Bilson just struck a deal with DKNY Jeans to design her own junior sportswear line for them - and it looks like it might be the beginning of an ongoing partnership.

According to WWD, Rachel’s line, which she’s named Edie Rose, will consist of about fifteen pieces, including sweaters, button-downs, jeans, and a color palette of black and white with occasional bursts of the very 2008 yellow.

Rachel is also set to appear in the ads, and probably lesser red carpet events in the clothes.

Edie Rose will be sold in major department stores like Macy’s and Nordstrom starting this September.

Expect to see her front row at Spring ‘09 Fashion Week wearing a cute yellow top, dark skinny jeans and a short jacket - but only because she really likes it, of course.

Target GOes Chai

Richard Chai.jpgTarget has decided which designer will follow Jovovich-Hawk and Rogan for their GO International line -

New York designer Richard Chai.

Chai made a name for himself after working for Marc Jacobs (and helping launch Marc by Marc) and reviving Tse.

We have a feeling Richard Chai is going to become a lot more well known outside the fashion community in the coming year - In the past month alone, he’s announced plans to design resort, pre-fall and a men’s line in addition to this capsule collection for Target.

The line will debut in August, so expect little jackets with rounded seams, a bright dress or two and at least one sheer, flowing top.

Paolo, We’ll miss you.

paolowe miss you.JPGWith WWD reporting that Paolo Melim Andersson and Chloe have officially broken up, we find ourselves looking back on their relationship the same way we did when we found out that Lauren and Brody parted ways. Admittedly, they weren’t together very long, but we really liked where things were going.

For us, Paolo was like a latter day Karl Lagerfeld, creating stark, startlingly cool clothes, and some of the most exciting shoes we’ve seen in a while. And ok, so we get that Cathy Horyn isn’t a fan, but really, is she a fan of anyone?

We’re sure that Hannah MacGibbon (former assistant to Valentino) will do a fantastic job in the top slot, and Phoebe Philo was herself promoted from assistant to Creative Director, so there is a recent precedent for an anonymous designer making waves at the house. We just really hope that she takes this time to create something personal and unique like Paolo did, rather than retreading on Chloe’s bestsellers (see the Paddington themed Overload of 2006).

We can only take comfort in the fact that Paolo lasted longer than Lars Nilsson at Gianfranco Ferre.

Fashion Week

First Look: Catherine Holstein

Catherine Holstein pull.jpgIt was more about the scene than the clothes at newbie Catherine Holstein’s Fall 2008 presentation at the Thom Bar Thursday night.

Almost all in a row, we spotted Amy Astley, two editors from Vogue and a photographer from Vanity Fair in the crowd of mostly New School students.

The room was so packed with people (from fashion editors to a slew of bystanders in sweatshirts,) it was almost a push/shove situation to make your way over to the little side rooms where the actual clothes (oh, it was a Fashion Week thing?) were on display.

So, the clothes? We loved it, even if the models in fake nerd glasses were a little much. As far as Cat Holstein is concerned, this fall is all about slouchy cool made up with structured bottoms and loose tops. The most striking aspect of her presentation was the use of Miro-inspired prints (Holstein decorated the space with Miro-inspired sketches of her own design,) on flimsy, worn tees - just the kind of off-hand use of something significant that the Parsons crowd adores.

Meanwhile, we’re adoring the super stiff skirts that stand up on their own (check it out after the jump) - but maybe paired with Hanes undershirts to avoid the clash look at work.

And it’s not even officially Day 1 of the Week…

Designer Studio

Inside the Designer’s Studio: Monica Botkier

Botkier Sophie.jpgReasons we love Botkier bags:

1. Most importantly, we’re obsessed with the Sophie, at left.

2. Almost as importantly, they come in every size possible, so you can carry one whether you’re packing for brunch or an 18-hour workathon.

3. Soon to be important, they’re going to look really cute with the new line of Botkier shoes out later this year.

So we wanted to chat with the photographer-turned-designer behind the name, Monica Botkier, who leads the pack of designers making a killing on the huge statement bag craze. We’ve been wondering about her ever since we started seeing her designs sold in what seems like every store possible (Barney’s, Harvey Nichols, Neiman Marcus, ShopBop…) and hanging from the elbows of the Angelina/Lindsay/Kate B/Heidi Klum type.

But despite the visibility of her bags, it doesn’t seem like anyone really knows Monica. So we thought we’d facilitate a little introduction.

Monica, Readers. Readers, Monica…
