Quote of the Day

“Carlos, we all have to do our bit, however small. So if you love fashion, be proud of the fact and show people how it improves your life and self-esteem. Maybe they will then understand what it can do. Otherwise, maybe I just need to come to Omaha…”—Donatella Versace answering Carlos from Omaha’s question about how to interest people in fashion because it’s sorta taboo where he lives. Donatella, we would very much like to accompany you on a trip to Nebraska and record every single moment, just so you know.

Kane’s Versus

chris kane unveils versus.jpgThe fashion world’s been waiting for ages to get a glimpse of Christopher Kane’s Versus collection for Versace.

Last season, the duo teased us with a peek at killer shoes and bags, as black and studded and sexy as expected. But this Sunday, he and the boss lady finally revealed the whole thing during a presentation in Milan.

In the video, he talks to The Guardian’s Jo Jones about the process, the importance of Donatella, and why he steers clear of too much color (to showcase his almost manic attention to detail). A few of the dresses actually bear a striking resemblance to Kane’s Topshop collection, with their lace panelling and detached sleeves and of course all of them sort of scream sex.

Red carpets should be flooded in no time.

Christopher Kane’s Master Class

chris kane ss10.jpg(Ed. Note: Excuse us while we rewind a bit. We were anxious to get Burberry up as soon as possible, but we’ve still got a few pre-extravaganza things to discuss.)

There’s something about Christopher Kane where at first, you’re flummoxed by the collection, but then comes the slow burn. In time, you learn to understand and then grudgingly like it. Eventually, you don’t just love his pieces, but covet them ardently. We’ve been doing this dance with Kane for a few years now, so this time around we just went straight for the covet.

We were besotted from look one.

Kane reeled us in through simple nostalgia with the delicate pale pink gingham and beaded details. We’d bet every girl in the room (including Anna Wintour, Donatella Versace, Natalia Vodianova and randomly, Joan Collins,) returned to their five year old self, begging their mother for a pretty pink gingham picnic dress. Kane perfectly captured that sentimentality. Then he hit fast forward to adolescence, where girly-ness gave way to womanhood and a boned bust took root inside the gingham.

“Celebrities — the cult — they don’t exist before Versace. This kind of thing to go and dress a rock band — nobody did that before Gianni did.”—Donatella Versace to OUT Magazine (via WWD) where she’s on the cover with model Paul Sculfor, aka that guy who dated Jennifer Aniston and Cameron Diaz. Cult of celebrity, indeed.

Burgled: Someone robbed the Michael Kors store on Prince the night before last at 5:30am. He distracted the security guard at the Apple store before breaking iinto Kors’ store and stealing $13,000 worth of merchandise. Fashion and the Jacksons

janetandmichaeljacksonkissoncheek.jpgThe memorial service for the King of Pop is about to get under way. And until we did our morning read of WWD, we hadn’t even thought about how it would affect LA’s fashion industry, which happens to operate basically right around the corner.

I used to work in the Cooper Building in downtown Los Angeles and anytime there was a bit of a protest (or big ones like those on immigration) it turns into quite the traffic mess down there. So here’s hoping all those uber-fans don’t hinder your work day too much.

So what will the Jackson family be wearing today?

Donatella’s Art Project

donatellaversaceartsunite.jpgThe Versace family have long been patrons of the arts.

And for the second year in a row, the design house will sponsor the Whitney Museum’s Gala and Studio Party in October (co-hosted by Donatella, Penelope Cruz, and Liz Swig.) It’s sure to be as fabulous an affair as last year, but that wasn’t the point of the designer’s trip to the museum Wednesday afternoon.

Yesterday’s festivities were actually way cooler than any celeb-filled event.

Versace is also partnering with the Whitney’s Education Department to create this awesome initiative called Art Unites which is focused on bringing all the good things that come along with creativity and inspiration to kids who need it the most.

Elie Tahari’s Helping Hand

subversive necklace tahari.jpgDonatella Versace threw a lavish dinner party in Milan last night at the close of a very brief and very sobering Men’s Fashion Week. She told The New York Times that the world will re-discover its love of excessive luxury in no time.

While she holds her breath, we’re going to enjoy the ways in which the fashion industry repeatedly comes together to help out the struggling. Like Elie Tahari partnering with the CFDA to rotate jewelry designers in his East Hampton shop this summer.

Kara Ross, Me & Ro, Stephen Dweck and Subversive’s Justin Giunta are among those with mini pop-ups in the Tahari store, complete with signs in the windows, for two weeks at a time from July 1st through September. Each will make personal appearances, too.

Tahari told WWD, “I wanted to show my support for the fashion industry by giving these designers a platform from which to raise the awareness of their brands and be seen in a highly trafficked environment such as the Hamptons.”

Our House

whcd03.jpgObviously, we don’t think we’re alone in loving that President Obama is pretty much the hippest guy to hold his position, well, ever.

But we’re quite sure we’ll never tire of examples of this.

Like the fact that the guest list at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner now includes people like Chace and Ed, Jason Wu, Donatella and so many others from our little world.

And of course, the guests are all looking their chicest to impress the first fam and the fashion press, who have taken coverage of MObama’s sartorial choices to an almost stalker-ish level. Not that we have a problem with that.

With Gossip Girl and fashion designers in the mix, it is really starting to feel like “our” White House, too.

Quote of the Day

“After another successful, sexy show, Donatella Versace hosted an intimate dinner at La Bolognese restaurant, but we hear her favorite spot in Milan is the restaurant San Marco. It is so tiny that you have to use the restroom next door—now, that is exclusive!” - Vogue’s Filipa Fino, on the glamorous heights of exclusivity, in the magazine’s blog (even though they won’t call it that).

Want to be a Fashiongänger?

galliano pirate.jpgHalloween is exactly one week away, and we bet you’re clicking all over the place trying to find Karlesque shades, aren’t you? Yeah, we know.

So we thought we’d get the ball rolling for you.

Here we go:

White shirt + neck-tie chain charm + fingerless gloves + black shades = Karl

Pirate hat + eyebrow pencil (for tiny moustache) = Galliano

Floppy bow-tie + black-rimmed glasses = Alber Elbaz

Orange hair spray + loads of buttons + asymmetrical blazer + anything with a union jack on it = Vivienne Westwood

Fake tan + blonde wig + tight dress = Donatella Versace

Wrap dress + teased brown hair = Diane Von Furstenburg

Costumes are so much easier when designers dress like pirates everyday, isn’t it?

A Funny Thing Happened at Fashion Fringe

FASHION FRINGE 5.JPGFor some reason, I had big expectations for Fashion Fringe.

Maybe it’s because some super cool designers have emerged from it and I thought I might see the next big thing. Or it could’ve been because Tom Ford was a judge and I have a huge crush on him. But it could be because when I walked in, the front row names read: Jerry Hall, Georgia May Jagger, Dita Von Teese, and Princess Beatrice.

But in the end, it was about the clothes. (Well, sort of. I did get a huge kick out of seeing Emma Watson end up in Jerry Hall’s seat and next to Dita. And it was kind of amazing to watch Donatella Versace walk straight into Faran).

The competition included four designers. The first showed an all-white collection inspired by Sarah Jessica Parker which sounds doomed for failure but actually ended up the winner (Eun Jeong Hong’s line, Go By a Secret Path). The second featured super cute, super wearable brightly colored dresses. The third went on print overload with more than a little Miu Miu influence. And the fourth, well the fourth kid was banking on Donatella’s vote and showed a parade of vampy dresses set off with dark lipstick.

Do I think I saw the next Chris Kane or Gareth Pugh? No. But I had fun.

Don(atella) the Builder

donatella versace speaks.jpgIt seems like every time we hear about a designer collaborating on a building, it’s going to be in Dubai.

So we were a little surprised this morning when we read that Donatella Versace was designing the interior renovation of the Clock Tower building at 5 Madison Avenue, including 55 apartments (and one enormous penthouse), and a spa which is expected to total around $1 billion.

This is especially interesting since everyone’s expecting the cost of real estate in Manhattan to eventually go the way of the rest of the country, so clearly Versace and co. don’t expect that to happen any time soon.

The project should be done in about two years - expect leather carpets and solid gold tubs.
