Backstage at VS: Breakfast & Bras

doutzen pull vs09.jpg“Everyone just expects me to jump now. I think they just think I jump naturally, like put me in great shoes and I jump,” said Caroline Trentini backstage at the Victoria’s Secret show this afternoon.

“Will you ever not jump?”

“No! I mean, as long as people ask me to jump, I’ll jump!”

Once I got that all-important question out of the way, I ran around the room and asked a handful of our favorite girls two critical questions:

1. What’d you have for breakfast?
2. What are you wearing to tonight’s after party?

Chanel Iman said she ate eggs, bacon, potatoes, cereal and fruit. I would have said, “Don’t lie,” but I wasn’t in the mood to pick a fight with an angel and she followed with, “I think eating is sexy.” She wants to wear the Valli dress she wore down his runway, but if it doesn’t show up, she’s sure she can find something “super sexy to wear with my fabulous boots.”

Julia Stegner’s wearing Herve Leger, surprise! (There were two camps of girls, the ones wearing Herve and the ones specifically not wearing Herve because everyone else is wearing Herve.) She’s not a breakfast person, but “I had pomegranate seeds this morning! Only because I’m on antibiotics and I have to eat something.”

The Seven Wonders of Fashion

corset.jpgDecember’s British Vogue is a treasure chest of goodies, from the how-to on glitter to Lara looking very un-Lara-like in ballgowns and a stunning Doutzen editorial.

But the one article that really caught my eye was a beautifully written collection of stories by some perfectly appointed contributors. “The Seven Wonders of Fashion” is an examination of pieces that are just so incredible that they endure the test of time. (There are some seriously great collages of fashion images over the years, too.)

Charlotte Rampling starts it all off with the tuxedo, an item of clothing she declares “empowering” and statement making. Amanda Harlech muses on the ballgown, the dress of every girl’s dreams, while Alison Goldfrapp informs us of the power of the hat, praising milliners as artists and hats as sculptures.

Are You Feeling Angelic?

doutzenvictoriassecretmodelingcontest.jpgThink you have what it takes to be the next Alessandra, Miranda, or Doutzen? Well, Victoria’s Secret’s giving you a shot at proving it by holding a nationwide open casting for their next fashion show (airing in December.)

Starting October 3, castings will be taking place in New York, Los Angeles, Miami, and Chicago. Panels of experts will narrow the choices down to 10 finalists and then the whole thing gets democrati and America gets to vote. But all ten finalists will be flown to New York for “Angel Boot Camp” which sounds rather ominous to me, but is apparently a series of challenges that sounds like a compressed season of ANTM. And we’ll all be able to follow along via weekly webisodes.

If you win, hopefully you won’t be the one stuck with the heavy metallic cape. For all the official rules, webisodes and whanot, go to VSAllAccess.com

Phillip Lim, Shop Boy

phillip and doutzen at the met.jpgI’ve been meaning to tell you guys about this all week.

Last Sunday, while I splashed in mud at All Points West, a friend did some Back to School (minus the school part) shopping in Soho.

She was trying on the Mongolian fur vest, the one Iris Strubegger rocked down the AW09 runway, at Phillip Lim, when Lim himself popped out onto the floor to spend some quality time with his customers, most of whom had no idea who he was.

He argued with my friend about which size to get, she wanted six, he wanted four, and built a few outfits onto different women until a group of girls, “who looked like they stepped out of Teen Vogue” came in the store and blew his cover. He stuck around though, offering advice and chatting up customers. As if the man could be more perfect.

The Searing Skyline

slide_2112_27536_large.jpgThe old adage is that sex sells.

Certain brands—Calvin Klein, American Apparel and Emporio Armani—often bank on the appeal of skin for their notorious billboards. The CK jean-clad orgy (which has now been replaced by the slightly tamer scene of Doutzen Kroes in a red bikini) billboard was right by our offices.

There has been high public outrage and disgust over these billboards. But these companies are obviously not backing down anytime soon (Calvin Klein is a veteran in causing scandals with their ads—Brooke Shields and her jeans, anyone?), because they also know those other words of wisdom: bad press is better than no press. The Huffington Post has put together a slide-show of the most scandalous New York City billboards, in case you need proof.

VS on FB

doutzenvictoriassecret.jpgWe usually learn about a new fan page on the book of faces by seeing it in our “suggestions” or noticing that a friend has become a “fan.” That’s not how Victoria’s Secret rolls at all.

They do big productions with angels and supermodels. Even if it is just to launch a Facebook page.

Instead, Alessandra and Doutzen will be at the store on Lex this Monday morning to make the announcement about the company’s official fan page.

The girls are also accepting VS’s Webby Award later that night at Cipriani.

Tech boys everywhere are very, very happy.

Quote of the Day

“Broadly speaking, there are two kinds of models: commercial models (who appear mostly in advertising) and editorial models (who tend to pose for fashion features, like the ones in this magazine). Typically, if you have healthy — i.e., strong (like Doutzen’s) — thighs, you may end up less of an editorial presence.” Robert Sullivan, in his profile on Doutzen Kroes, in April Vogue.

A Testament to Testino’s Favorite Move

We just came across this old Model Diaries video of Doutzen Kroes, before she became a Victoria’s Secret Angel.

In it, Doutzen smiles, Doutzen talks about her small hometown, she eats a cantaloupe slice, etc.

But the best part is with Mario Testino: “I love when you can tell a girl, ‘I want you jumping.’”

Oh, Mario.

What Do You Heart?

i heart tote bag by chris deane.jpgYesterday, during step one hundred of Britt-Cleans-Out-Her-Closet week, I found a giant bag full of tote bags.

I felt like Mary Poppins pulling them out - the never ending stream included bags from Bumble, from Charlotte Ronson and Alexandre Herchcovitch, one from Preen and another from Eley Kishimoto - the tangible fruits of my Fashion Week labors.

But I’d trade them all in for this one from Christopher Deane.

I’ve always been a sucker for the traditional I Heart logo and this thick, cotton, made in the USA tote looks sturdier than any of the paper thin bags I’ve garnered from the runways.

The only trouble is that I have to decide what exactly I heart. And while today I might write The Grinch or Kate Moss, tomorrow I might want to write Candy Canes or Doutzen.

What will you heart?

DOUTZEN CHECKS HERSELF OUT.jpg

Quote of the Day

“Sometimes it’s tough at first glance to identify the model at a shoot. You look around for the glossy, glamorous woman you’ve admired on billboards and in magazines but all you can see is a pale schoolgirl whose legs are too long. One has no such difficulties with Doutzen Kroes.” - in an article on Doutzen, in the new Vogue Australia.

Whitney Art Party: People Watcher’s Paradise

dior couture shoes.jpgWhat we saw last night, in between looking at the art, dancing under the disco ball and stalking Moby:

- Doutzen Kroes, frustrated, spelling her name to a PR girl who couldn’t figure out why she was there and if she should let her in. Also, she’s the most stunning, perfect human being we have ever seen in our lives. We are not exagerrating.

- Sean Lennon dancing with an Irina look-alike, who definitely wasn’t Irina.

- Barbara Bush dancing with Derek Blasberg, who we thought was Jack McCullough of Proenza, but wasn’t.

- Model kickball. OK, not really but Coco, Behati, Hana, Doutzen, and Elettra, (all in skintight, envy inducing Herve but Coco), huddled in a circle while their dates/friends huddled in a protective outter circle while Rachel Zoe tried to eye her way in.

- The girl in back of us in the bathroom line, asking Lou Doillon, who was in back of her, where she was from, why she was in New York and how she finagled her way into the party. Weird, because Lou is so beautiful it’s kind of obvious she belongs in all the cool places.

- Vogue’s Stephanie LaCava rocking these Dior shoes (left) like they were her favorite Repetto ballet flats.

- Rachel Bilson, waiting in line for champagne, just like us, checking out Natalie. Yes, Rachel, she actually is smaller than you.

Notes on the Met Ball

kate at the met ball.jpgWhat I learned at the Met Ball last night:

- Zac Posen is my fashion superhero. Please see his combined superman costume with Kate Mara.

- Models only hang out with models. I felt like a kid in a candy store watching Coco, Anja, Hilary, Chanel, Stam, Lily D., and Doutzen cluster for 15 minutes…although literally no one else cared. Apparently George Clooney’s a bigger deal.

- Michelle Trachtenberg is one of the models. She jumped into Stam’s arms and kiss/kissed everyone else, (while also, interestingly enough, avoiding every single Gossip Girl cast member on the red carpet).

- Philip Lim and Chanel Iman are the perfect couple - and probably the only two people who look amazing in that faded mustard color.

- The Voguettes did not have to wear shades of white. I spotted mint green, gold, purple, and navy - which was on Meredith Melling-Burke who also wore Natalie’s beloved YSL star necklace.

- When I asked Christopher Bailey which superhero he was channelling, he said, “Christopher Bailey!” and giggled.

- Donatella Versace wears a wig.

- Penn Badgley wears red and blue cufflinks - his personal homage to Spiderman - while waiting for Blake Lively to pose for pictures. Apparently, the waiting has become a nightly routine.

- When Pacey stands next to Chuck, Nate and Dan, I long for the teen dramas of my adolescence - even if the clothes are better now.

ThreeAsFour for Gap: Confirmed

threeasfour gap dress.jpgBack before the Fashion Week madness, we reported that runway favorite ThreeAsFour was doing a capsule collection for Gap as part of the deal that Gap struck with the CFDA/Vogue fashion fund after a hefty donation.

Now WWD fills in the rest reporting that 3.1 Phillip Lim, Band of Outsiders, Michael Bastian and Philip Crangi will also design limited-edition collections (all having to do with the white shirt) for the mass brand this year.

The clothes hit stores next month, but you might have to do some hunting for some of it - as of right now, it looks like only Phillip Lim’s designs will be available in most Gap stores (including Gap Canada, UK and Japan.) So if distribution is decided by popularity or name recognition, we’re not sure where ThreeAsFour will land - but we’re hoping right on Broadway so we can just swing by on our way to work.

In the meantime, we’ll be sure to put up the ad as soon as possible, featuring guest appearances by Chanel Iman, Jessica Stam, Lily Donaldson, Du Juan, Catherine McNeil, Anja Rubik, Doutzen Kroes and Irina Lazareanu.

The Doutzen Wears Prada

doutzen54fj.jpg On the short list for Doutzen Kroes’ Vogue shoot in the ice rink yesterday:

Also, apparently the Dutch model really can speed skate, which just seems absurd but also strangely sensible:

Actually, if you told us Doutzen held a degree in nuclear physics, we’d probably be like, “Oh yeah…”

On another skating note: Last night, Richie Rich told us, “Don’t be sad Heatherette’s not having a fashion show. I’m not. Skating is way more fun.”

Doutzen on Ice!

doutzen.jpg Jessica Stam may have the ice-eyes, but we hear Doutzen Kroes is the model who’s getting the literal cold shoulder from Vogue this week:

She’s been shooting at an ice rink with speed skater Apolo Anton Ohno and Annie Leibowitz - apparently, they’ve even made the Dutch model her own pair of speed skates!

No word on what else the Victoria’s Secret face will be wearing, though Nike and Adidas are big advertisers in the magazine, so of course those are possibilities.

Then again, Vera Wang is both a former figure skater and a former Vogue editor, and often made ice costumes for Olympic champion Michelle Kwan…

And if they really want to surprise everyone, Richie Rich was also once a professional Ice Capader, and sometimes creates his own spandex creations for skating exhibitions.

We’re not betting on that last possibility, but whatever - a little glitter never killed anyone.
