“It’s my new thing! It makes me happy. It can definitely go asshole, but it can also be a fabric smile.” —Drew Barrymore on bow ties in Time Out New York.

I’m a huge Bikram yoga junkie, though my practice has certainly fallen off a bit since I landed at Fashionista. Note to self: get back to that hot room!
That said, I’m always on the lookout for cool yoga gear. Currently, I’m obsessing over these canvas totes from Beyond Yoga, which are actually not yoga-centric at all but definitely useful for carrying around my mat, clothes, and coconut water.
But really, they’re just super cute canvas bags that graffiti artist Andre Charles adorned with words selected by some A-List celebs. They were asked to complete the sentence “I am beyond…”
Each and every time we see these Chloe multi-strap wedges we wince a bit and wish we’d had the courage to spend our tax return money on them instead of a new computer.
Chloe Sevigny’s been rocking the beige all summer and now Drew Barrymore’s traded in her festival grunge for the black version paired with cuffed skinny jeans.
Not wanting to feel left out, Topshop’s made their own. They’ve ditched the two inch wedge, silver oval buckles and $700 plus price tag in favor of a cone-shaped heel, gold rectangular buckles and a $120 tag. They’ve also eliminated an extra strap and offered their version in black and hot pink instead of the more neutral grey and forest green.
Unfortunately the Chloe version’s already sold out everywhere (trust us, we’ve looked), but that doesn’t mean you need the Topshop shoe. They won’t fool a soul.
We had a little thing in my family when I was younger that when someone was wrong, he/she had to repeat this sentence three times in rapid succession, “You were right and I was wrong.”
Now, I’m not willing to completely concede on the face paint front by any means, but I do have to admit that Drew Barrymore may have been on to a trend (albeit one I’m not necessarily into) with her painted cheeks and forehead at Bonnaroo.
This spread from a story in the newest issue of V Magazine (shot by Willy Vanderperre) shows Iris sporting the darker, edgier version, in comparision to Drew’s hippie fairy.
Regardless of my feelings on the matter, it seems that I may have to accept this as a trend for a bit longer than expected. But then again, it might just grow on me, in which case I’ll totally do the “You were right…” speech, even if you all can’t hear me.
So once I got over my line of Olsen questioning I finally got down to business.
If there’s a common thread among the people I’ve interviewed, it’s their nostalgia for a time when talent was enough, when you worked hard and made your way up the chain to the ridiculously successful place in which they all sit now instead of these days when everyone wants a piece of the industry and who you know becomes more important than what you know.
In Part II, we talk about how Rolando ended up at Bumble & bumble, Fashion Week work versus editorial work, being on a plane with Charlie’s Angels and his Madonna moment - because really, everyone has one.
‘Tis the season of the outdoor music festival, which tends to bring about some very cool, and also some very bizarre fashion choices.
Gwyneth, the Kates (Moss and Bosworth), and Sienna have all perfected fashionably bohemian rock festival garb over the years, throwing in a pair of wellies when the weather demands, or wearing the tiniest of dresses while grooving in the desert at Coachella. Drew Barrymore, on the other hand, we’re less sure about.
Now we usually love Drew and all her fairy dust sensibilities. We’ve even lately embraced some of her colorful beauty choices. This one from Bonnaroo over the weekend (while enjoying a little Bon Iver) is not one of them.
She looks like she just finished playing dress-up with a group of five year-olds. And while we love embracing our childlike innocence as much as the next girl, this just seems to be taking it a bit too far. Really, a feather? Though we will give her credit for picking a rather lovely palette of glittery face paint to work with.
This is a picture of Drew Barrymore at one of last night’s Prop 8 rallies in California, but we’ve noticed that she’s been sporting these blue swipes for a couple of weeks now.
The last time we wore blue eyeshadow was to Henry Holland’s after party - a completely appropriate and reasonable occasion - but Drew’s pop of neon is making us want to add color to our summer makeup routine. (A routine that usually consists simply of no makeup.)
We’re a bit afraid of coming off alien-like, however. The idea looks awesome in the pictures we’ve seen shot from a distance, though up close it looks like a child tried to circle her eyes in crayon, or sidewalk chalk.
Have you tried this? Will you try it? Tips, please.
Magazine Whore
If you, like us, are obsessed with magazines, welcome to phase one of the best project ever.
A friend just sent us a link to Premier Issues, a site that’s taken it upon itself to scan in debut covers of all the magazines they can get their hands on. They have obvious ones like LOVE, but hard to find, nostalgia-inducing covers, too like Cindy Crawford on the cover of George, Courtney Love on Flaunt, Drew Barrymore for Jane, Jessica Simpson and Nick Lachey on Teen Vogue.
Most of the covers come with Letter from the Editor text and hopefully, soon, scans of the rest of the magazine.
For now, here’s this, from Jane Pratt in Jane’s first issue, “Drew said, ‘If you put anyone else on your first cover, I’ll kill you.’ Seriously, having one of my most beloved people on the front of the premiere issue is overwhelmingly wonderful,” because we still miss it every day.
On Friday, WWD reported that Salma Hayek is currently working on an undisclosed beauty project. Earlier this month, it was also rumored that Jennifer Aniston is on the hunt for an endorsement deal herself.
But all I could think was, really? Isn’t the celebrity endorsement template a bit staid, especially in today’s tough economic times? There are plenty of models out there that could do the same job for much less money and hassle. Sure, a celebrity creates more exposure for your brand, but do they really influence consumers to spend money? I can’t say I know anyone who’s rushing out to CVS because Drew Barrymore’s shilling a Cover Girl mascara via alluring blinks. (And just think of the stable of stars L’Oréal Paris employs - sixteen celebrities, including Beyonce, Scarlett and Eva Longoria Parker - and somehow they can’t think of how to help that year-to-year net profit drop of 26.6%.)
You’d think beauty companies would try to cut some of the dead weight right now - could what Neutrogena gets out of Susie Castillo’s advertisements really make up for whatever she was paid? - unless we’re totally off. Do celebrities smiling and flipping their hair really get you to spend your cash more so than models?

So, you think we’re obsessed with LOVE?
Maybe.
But only because we’ve been obsessed with POP since we went to London sophomore year of college and spent too much money on mind-blowing magazines.
Since then, we love all things Katie Grand. And while we can’t wait for LOVE’s debut, it’s with great sadness that we mull over her final, Drew Barrymore-covered issue of POP.
Her last letter from the editor, in which she talks beginnings, highlights and ends, after the jump.
WWD is all excited about the Gucci / UNICEF auction, and with good reason. While they raise funds for Malawi orphans, they’ll also raise their own profile with Madonna, Drew Barrymore, Adrien Brody, Salma Hayek, Alicia Keys, Demi Moore, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rihanna, and Sting.
But the party takes place on Wednesday, February 6th in New York City - and that’s smack in the middle of Fashion Week.
If all of these stars are in town during Tent season, does that mean they’ll actually show up for some shows?
We doubt Madonna will attend anything, and after sitting dangerously close to the photo pits in Paris this Fall, we can’t really blame her.
But if we were betting girls, and sometimes we are, we’d say a definite seat filler in February will be Lucy Liu (who will need tons of PR for her new TV show, Lipstick Cashmere Jungle Fight (isn’t that the name?).
Demi might return to subtly brag (again) that she just looks better with age. It would be fun to see her again, even though we don’t know which big magazine is left to interview her (maybe W?).
And Drew Barrymore?
Well, we doubt it, but there’s always wishing on stars… or in this case, wishing on Chris Benz’s inspiration board.
Those who caught the Never Been Kissed marathon on Bravo this weekend may have spotted something fun:
A knockoff of Kate Moss’ Versace dress that she sported with Johnny Depp!
The outfit’s a little more dominatrix than Kate’s, but it’s undoubtedly inspired by Versace’s design, and it’s hilariously bad -
In the movie, Drew Barrymore wears it as one of the nerds in high school, desperate to impress Jessica Alba and the rest of her In Crowd!
Fortunately, Drew’s chosen accessories - a hot pink cardigan and a neon feather boa - never made it to the TopShop selling floor…
The girls may have filmed a music video during this week’s Top Model, but the only clip we really noticed was the new Cover Girl commercial.
It stars Drew Barrymore and some chubby new mascara, along with a mod citrus wardrobe that looks like it has a lot of Giles Deacon, plus several rolls of neon tights.
We suspect the stylist Katie Grand has something to do with this, and we also wonder if this is the first time makeup’s ever been sold based on sheer personality.
After all, Drew’s lashes do look long, but the real pull of the ad is the “Do You Think We Could Be Friends?” factor - like you can borrow her mascara in the girl’s room, and maybe get some tips on yoga and running, since Drew seems to have dropped 10 pounds just for this campaign!
