Kate Gets Glam

katehudsonelleuk.jpgJezebel has a couple shots of Kate Hudson from the latest issue of Elle UK, coming out later this week. First, let me just say I barely recognized her, but I don’t mean that in an insulting way.

She looks amazing, but not really all that much like the girl spotted night after night watching A-Rod help lead his team to a World Series title (Go Yankees!) or even the way she does in most of her fashion spreads. It’s much more model than actress which is rather nice.

For me it’s all in the makeup. I love the way her skin is somehow matte, yet glowing, at the same time. And while I usually stick to the most basic of basic black eyeliner applications, I’m definitely going to start practicing this extremely exaggerated cat eye for my next big night out. It’s a total face-changer.

What do you think? Do you like the makeup as much as I do?

bloodbrooches_edited-1.jpgBloody Good: Those are $800 blood brooches. Ick, but they fit perfectly with our Halloween spirit today. But really how does one even think to design something like that? {The Moment}

Get Online: As the print world crumbles, new magazines continue to launch on the interwebs. We love that Glossy is put together bi-monthly by a group of 16-25 years. Impressive. {Issuu}

Bags of Becks: Well not exactly, but rumors are flying that Victoria Beckham will be adding handbags to her line. We hope that doesn’t mean she’ll stop carrying that ginormous Birkin we love so much. {ElleUK}

Yikes: Economist-types keep saying the recession is over, but I’m pretty sure the 540 people about to lose their jobs at Time Inc would beg to differ. God, we hope this stops soon. {NY Post}

Oh Boy: Penn Badgley tells Cosmo that he likes his women to dress “simply”. You know, like in “plunging v-necks” and “thigh high boots”. Sweater dresses are good, too. This editorial, however, is creepy. {Cosmopolitan}

Designer Facebook: Gucci’s launched their own social networking site, Eyeweb, to promote their new sunglasses; Frida Giannini even makes a cameo in one slideshow. There are only two models for now, but more to come, and more colors, for spring. {Grazia}

Bananas for Anna: We’ve had a crush on Anna Friel since Pushing Daisies, now she’s playing Eliza Doolittle in London’s West End. Here, some of her best looks. {ElleUK}

On McQueen: Try to break up your Sarah Mower with other important critics. Like Hilary Alexander’s Alexander McQueen review; it’s twice as long and has a video of the show (since Lady Gaga killed the initial live stream for most of us). {The Telegraph}

The Fat Lady Is Not Singing Yet: It’s still unclear how many more names will be added to the 180 that already lost their jobs this week at Condé Nast. How un-fun are those flights back from Paris going to be? {NY Observer}

They All Fall Down: We’re rather partial to the “Drop It Like You’re Hot” but what’s your favorite Falling Model dance? What would have happened to me if I ever tried to put on those McQueen shoes defies all known categories. {The Frisky}

edandleightonforaskenquired.jpgBass Alert! We have yet to personally spy our fair Chuck in the ‘hood shooting this season. But thankfully Nylon offers up a scrumptious fix today in the form of a multi-image foreign ad campaign in their Korean edition, with Miss Waldorf of course. Man, we can’t wait for season 3 to start. {Nylon}

Lily Hops & Bops for ELLE

Lily Allen’s landed the cover of ELLE UK’s October issue in honor of the 25th anniversary of London Fashion Week.

They’ve put her in a blond wig and custom outfits by Brit designers including Richard Nicoll, Stella McCartney, Burberry and Giles. The crystallized, body con Louise Goldin’s her favorite.

In this behind the scenes video, which also features photographer Rankin talking about how “uber-cool” Lily is, she says she’s never really been into the whole Kate Moss, Sienna Miller thing and jokingly claims Alexa Chung’s her London Style Icon.

It’s the graphic rock star make-up we really couldn’t take our eyes off of though.

“Deacon of Fashion”: Elio Berhanyer passed up the opportunity to work for Cristobal Balenciaga and sent a young man named Oscar de la Renta to New York City in his place, but no regrets. At 80-years-old he’s the most respected and apparently feisty Spanish couturier. {NYTimes}

Dirrrrrrty: Depending on where you work, these editorials pulled together by the kids at Refinery may be NSFW. Regardless, they are hot. {Refinery29}

Shop Swap: New York’s Lower East Side and London’s Newburgh Quarter are trading places for a spell in October. We’ll get some of their goodies like Cowshed and they’ll be treated to a full-on American Halloween party and street fair, along with their pop-up shops. {ELLE UK}

Welcome Back, Winona

winonaryderELLEukcover.JPGWe love the special subscriber’s cover of Elle UK that just arrived in our inbox (and hits newsstands tomorrow).

It’s Winona at her absoute pixieish best, perhaps being plucked from what was really starting to look like fashion and film obscurity.

And the coverline, one of the most written about tattoos of all time, is the kind of simple perfection we wish wasn’t relegated to non-newsstand issues.

We’ll forgive Winona her transgressions as long as she brings back the actress and gritty style muse we knew and loved throughout our teenage years.

Later. We gotta motor if we wanna grab that issue.

Karl Loves Lily

lilly allen lands chanel.jpgLily Allen’s landed on that oh-so-enviable list of Karl Lagefeld’s favorites.

Elle UK reports that after much campaigning - she does carry Chanel handbags everywhere and she does sit front row at Chanel each and every season - Lily will be the face of Chanel accessories for AW09. Karl’s set to shoot her next week in London.

We’ve long been told of Karl’s obsession with youth and young people and if there’s such thing as the perfect person to carry off lucite encased 2.55s and furry pink evening clutches - it’s probably Lily.

Or Blair Waldorf, but since she’s not real Lily’ll do.

Gwyneth: And Now, Designer

gwyneth paltrow in custom stella dress.jpgLet’s count it up:

1. Mother

2. Actress

3. Model - face of Tod’s, Estee Lauder, RCV (red carpet vet)

4. Gym owner (we just realized “Gwyn Gym” could be cute)

5. Fashion insider (personal friends with Stella McCartney and Valentino)

6. Amateur cook both in the home and on television with her own book of recipes coming out next year

7. And now, celebrity designer.

At the very least, it’s not her own namesake line like “G, Isn’t This Incredible,” but a capsule collection for the French brand ZOE Tee’s, which is best known for easy jersey pieces that can be bought on sites like ASOS.

At least she’s paying mind to the “celebrity” part of that title.

An Open Letter to John Galliano

john galliano.jpgDear John Galliano,

Why don’t you advertise in our magazines?

Is it because you think we can’t handle your fashion? Because we can.

We had a seven hour plane ride on which to read four different British magazines and in the midst of every single one - LOVE, Vogue, Bazaar and Elle - we paused to admire Sasha lounging in your colorful silks and powdered wig alongside the Fashionista typeface.

Anyway, you’re probably busy getting ready for Paris, but we think your people should call American people and start spicing up the ad pages on this side of the Atlantic.

See you in Paris!

Merci,
Fashionista

Tim Walker to Film

tim walker shot .jpgBritish fashion photographer Tim Walker’s just confirmed that he’ll branch out into film in 2009.

He’s the man behind most of Vogue UK’s fairytale-like editorials and a major contributor on Nick Knight’s ShowStudio. You know this almost iconic image of Lily Cole and the December 08 spread starring Karen Elson and Tim Burton.

His short film will debut this spring with a follow up feature length film slated for Fall 2009. No word yet on plot lines and characters but we do expect fantasy and would love for Gemma to land a role.

Between this and Tom Ford’s movie and Vogue’s Sundance debut, fashion’s officially crossed over.

Fashion Bandits Caught?!

hamburgler.jpgRemember the band of outlaws that haunted London’s most fashionable streets this fall? Elle UK is reporting that they’ve finally been caught.

Apparently, the group of bandits included seven men, ages 19-43. We’re kind of surprised there weren’t any women involved, since we secretly wish we could sneak into all the best stores after hours.

But we want to know, are these guys rocking their designer outfits to London’s hippest parties? Because we would have noticed if huge quantities of clothes and accessories from Sonia Rykiel, Luella, Marc etc. started popping up on eBay.

If the crime spree is really over, designers can head into fall Fashion Week breathing a bit easier… meanwhile, we can imagine this story getting optioned for a movie, sponsored by the designers involved.
