Following in the footsteps of Mischa Barton, Hayden Panettiere, and everybody’s favorite Party of Five cast member, Emma Roberts has just been signed on as the new brand ambassador for Neutrogena.
The 18-year old Nickelodeon princess, who made her rounds at Spring 09 last year in New York, has previously modeled for Dooney & Bourke, another hallmark of commercially successful teen queens (think Lindsay Lohan, and Hayden, again).
Interestingly, Neutrogena/Dooney girls tend to have a penchant for designing on the side: Lindsay’s leggings, Mischa’s line of purses, Hayden’s guest designing for Dooney & Bourke, etc (fortunately, Jennifer Love’s star fell long before starlets were required to design anything but careers with direct-to-video endings).
So is this the first of many stepping stones on the way to Emma Roberts, the Collection?
Brian Reyes showed so early in the morning that they let us bring our coffee into the tent.
In one front row, sat Joe Zee, Robbie Myers and Kate Mara. Across the runway was the Vogue team and Emma Roberts. The only people who conversed were Roberts and Mara.
Both sides, however, seemed pleased with the perfectly girly, made-for-starlets collection. For the most part, Reyes stuck with a neutral color palette. Toward the end, he introduced some prints, including a perfectly striped, slouchy shirt dress, and even mixed and matched patterns. There were lots of mini skirts, a few ruffles and almost everything came with a belt.
At one point, Roberts grabbed her stylist’s arm and said, “Oh. My. God. I have to have that.”
We felt that way about a lot of it, too.

The Erin Fetherston show was last night, and even with all the shows we’ve gone to so far today, we still find ourselves thinking about it.
You see, if you’re not used to Erin’s clothes (girly, floaty, romantic), then you may not have liked Erin’s Spring 09 collection - the clothes had the same classic Erin feel as always, but this time around, floaty gave way to poufy, girly gave way to saccharine, and romantic was replaced with frocks that sort of looked like sorbet-streaked cream puffs. She even managed to include runway oddities (not an easy feat) like dollar coin-sized sequins in pastels on loose bell bottoms, and bits of fabric that looked a lot like the light-reflecting stuffing that comes at the bottom of Easter baskets.
All in all, it was definitely a show - we couldn’t take your eyes off the runway, and the girls did sort of look like hazy dreams. Not to mention, there was a dress or two in there (see the shorter, floaty piece that looks a lot like a melted and swirled rainbow icy) we fully plan on hunting down once Spring enters the market.
But we can’t imagine too many people daring to wear most of it - not even the incredibly press savvy Emma Roberts who declared Erin one of her favorite designers from her front row seat after the show. We’re pretty sure this ones only for the truly die-hard Fetherston fans.

And now, a note from Faran…
Maybe this is dating me, but here’s a list of the Nickelodeon shows I watched religiously:
Hey, Dude!
Salute Your Shorts
Nick News with Linda Ellerbee
The Secret World of Alex Mack
None of these shows involved fashion, despite the fact that 11-year-old me was obsessed with W, Vogue, and Mademoiselle (again, maybe this is dating me).
But now it seems Nickelodeon is climbing off the horses and summer camp flagpoles, and onto the fashion bandwagon. After its announcement of Lily Collins as fashion news correspondent, and after its Unfabulous star Emma Roberts signed a campaign deal for Dooney + Bourke, they crafted a TV show about a fashion company called True Fashion that hires a teenage girl to run their juniors department.
The good news is that the girl will be played by Keke Palmer, the adorable star of Akeela and the Bee seen at left.
The bad news is that… well… maybe it’s not “bad” news, but do you want your 11-year-old daughter or sister having fantasies about working in fashion? That’s a loaded question, and I’m grateful and thrilled to actually work in the fashion industry, but still - worth discussing.
And for the record, here are the Nickelodeon shows I watch religiously now:
iCarly
Drake + Josh
The Backyardigans - I can’t explain it, I think the spooky cartoon hippo is amazing.

August 2007: It was the quote pulled ‘round the world. Fashionista Diaries’ cast member Nicole told everyone that her favorite designer was Juicy Couture.
Fast forward to September 2007: Karlie Kloss, Teen Vogue cover girl, adds Juicy to a “three way tie” between Miuccia and Marc.
And then last Thursday, veritable cute girl Emma Roberts, talks shop with Stacie Farber, and sandwiches the suburban staple between Luella, Marc, and Miu Miu on her list of favorites.
Are they paying these girls to say this? Do adorable, rational teenagers with access to anything money can buy really choose Juicy over say Charlotte Ronson or Trovata?
Because if so, we are really out of touch with high school girls…

We hear that teen star Emma Roberts is heading to Fashion Week, and should be turning up in a front row near you.
This is good news because…
*She’s just adorable.
*Teens should see that an interest in fashion doesn’t necessarily mean you should look like Mary Kate… or on the other, Juicy-er side of the spectrum, like Hayden Panetierre.
*She’s not pregnant.
*We love Taylor Momsen, but she’s already vying for the “most outfit changes in a day” award for her exhausting show schedule - the same honor given to Hilary Duff last year. It’ll be nice for someone else who was born in the ’90s to get a shot at the crown.
Welcome to New York, Emma!
