photo courtesy of Jak&JilThis picture over at Jak&Jil has us wishing that we had someone to come over and put a slew of well-placed bobby pins and flowers in our hair every morning.
Alas, this is likely never to happen. But we are still currently in the market for ways to make our thrown-up-in-a-bun ‘dos look vaguely more interesting and less, well, haphazardly thrown together.
We love the floral motif mixed in with the classic pins—and a quick internet search let us know they wouldn’t be too hard to get our hands on. This copper set is super cute, and the Etsy seller seems to have lots of other vintage pin options too. We also found some with a little sparkle for fancier occasions.
Now if we could just master the art of perfectly place things on the backs of our heads without breaking into a sweat.
In my ramp up to last Sunday’s season premiere of Mad Men, I re-watched the first season. Of course, the ladies’ outfits (and Don, duh) made me swoon just as much as the first time around. But something else stood out that I hadn’t paid much attention to initially—the sleepwear. Most specifically Betty Draper’s short, flowy, chiffon nighties.
Now, I still pretty much look like a college girl in a dorm when I crawl into bed at night, but I’m seriously considering stocking up on a few of these romantic numbers. Don’t you love how Betty lounges around all day in one sometimes? (She evens shoots at neighbors pigeons!) And they do look incredibly comfortable, even for hot summer nights. Plus, the little robes that go over them? Love!
I found some great ones on Etsy here and here that I’m loving lots.
What about you? Would you wear proper lady pajamas a la Betty?
When we put our own rings on it, we like to layer them.
And since we’ve been feeling quite crafty as of late, we went on a hunt for some handmade, rustic looking ones to make into our new signature accessory. Etsy is offering up exactly what we’re looking for.
This rough diamond ring has a perfect unrefined quality, and we love that the colors and texture of the ring can be customized to suit your fancy.
And it’s only $67. Now we can buy more than one to stack on.

Lately, we’ve been on the fence about cork shoes. Not shoes with just a cork platform, mind you. But ones that use the material for the entire shoe.
We were intrigued when a friend told us there were super cheap vintage cork shoes on Etsy.
This pair and this pair totally sold us on the trend.
Though as always, the unfortunate thing about shopping on Etsy (or eBay) is that there’s usually only one size, and if it isn’t yours…tough luck. And these two? The Goldilocks dilemma: one too big and one too small.
So we got pretty excited when we saw Topshop has their own version. However, this is just a bit too woodsy for our tastes. Stuart Weitzman did a cork slingback two years ago (pictured) that we would consider rocking, so let’s hope that more designers get on board. Or that more vintage pairs flood the market.

Brace yourself Mr. Lagerfeld.
We just spotted this “Coco Chanel Genuine Mink Charm Bracelet” on Etsy.
It’s being sold by PoetSummer who says she’s trying out some new designs. For this particular piece she’s linked black and white pictures of the designer with actual mink, Eiffel tower charms, vintage rhinestones, pearls and the focal point - interlocking C’s.
She’s selling it for $99 and will give you two chains so that you can wear the “piece of art” as a bracelet or a necklace.
What she doesn’t mention is that she’s using another company’s logo to make a profit. Someone should probably let the artist know that Chanel has one of the strictest copy policies in the industry and goes so far as to take out ads in newspapers and magazines warning people against breathing the name Chanel inappropriately - let alone using their logo.
So if she can’t come up with any new ideas, we’d suggest selling that logo someplace other than the internet.
1. Because after all the little flashes of jade at Chanel, you can’t get the idea out of your head either.
2. Because you should really stock up on your spring wares so you actually have stuff in your closet come real spring.
3. Because you might be strapped for cash these days, and these adorable stainless steel bud studs are $5, which is less than I paid for my bagel with lox this morning.
4. Because they’re made in America and you’ve been totally meaning to help out with that whole economy thing.
5. Did I mention they’re $5? And since shipping will cost you $1.95 no matter what, you may as well scoop them up in red, baby blue, yellow and purple, too. Come to think of it, that might make a cute decoration down the length of a placket or along a cute clutch.
Did I miss anything?
My dad’s on a cufflinks kick.
He scours outdoor markets from Lisbon to Cairo to Istanbul looking for readymade antique versions or vintage coins and baubles to make into his own.
So I’ve had my eyes open - his birthday’s coming up - and these popped up on Etsy. They’re charmingly vintage, but not cheesy, and the colors of the playing cards are subtle enough for him to wear to work with his suits.
And of course, because I’m the one who actually loves them, I’m already guessing which size men’s shirt, (with link holes), I need to buy so that I can wear one as a dress with an unexpected accessory.
Don’t worry, I promise to wear pants.
We love nautical for summer.
Britt will buy anything with stripes or navy blue and Hayley rocks this romper sailor suit (which Britt plans to steal) from Beckerman.
But if you’re not so vocal, or visual, about your love of sailors and the sea, this bracelet from designer TrystByKerry is for you, and frankly for us, too.
The anchor is small, the chain looks a little bit antique, the pendant reminds us of Portuguese tiles and it’s long enough to be worn as a necklace or multi-stranded bracelet.
Now if we could just find a sailboat on the East River, we’d be set.
We just came across BRadelyBB, a seller on Etsy, and we knew we had to share. Her online store is packed with adorable accessories, mostly stud earrings, and at incredibly low prices.
The ice pop earrings, at left ($4!), are what first drew us in. We’re picturing them with braids and a romper.
And then we saw these steel anchor studs ($5), these neon yellow rose studs ($6), these bright watermelon slices ($3) - we could go on and on.
Extra best part? The seller is located in upstate New York, so if you’re in town, dying to buy something cute and have less than $10 to spend, believe it or not, you’re in luck.
Reasons why we want at least twenty of these:
1. Because we’re becoming obsessed with flowers
2. Because these might actually make a decent gift for Mother’s Day
3. Because whenever we get a cute bobby pin, we lose it immediately
4. Because the red will really suit our hair color (or anyone’s)
5. Because we’re getting into muggy heat territory, and these are better than just plain black ones to hold up braids
6. Because sometimes, it’s the littlest details that really make a look
At the blog mode panel at the Met two weeks ago, Harold Koda said Simon Costin’s Victorian looking necklaces were two of the most discussed pieces of the exhibit.
Most people who took the time to post comments were disturbed by the sperm filled vials and dried bird claws, but a few found them really beautiful - and so did we. The gothic-themed jewelry included intricate wire work, polished stones and engraved pendants, a perfect accompaniment to our white t-shirt dominated wardrobe.
Unfortunately, no mere mortal, (except maybe Daphne Guinness?), could get her little hands on the pieces so we might layer a couple of these from Etsy seller Aminyitray instead.
We love the seahorse to the left. There’s also a microscope slide, specimen jars, and even a bobcat tooth necklace.
Sorry, we couldn’t find any with sperm - but we’re pretty sure you’ll be ok with that.
We just stumbled upon the best vendor ever on Etsy.
The Lovely Teaspoon makes the kind of random, creative little plastic baubles you find in trinket stores in mini towns on the way to somewhere isolated.
There are G.I. Joe earrings, Barbie shoes strung on necklaces, dinosaur rings, a Bambi pin, Lego pieces in the vein of Marc by Marc and our favorite, the plastic baby bobby pins to the left.
It’s the kind of playful jewelry that’s perfect for summer when you’re hot and sweaty and running from the pool to free concerts and don’t want to worry about anything you’re wearing. And there are a few pieces that wouldn’t look out of place on Jeremy Scott’s runway.
We wish we’d thought to do such creative things with our leftover childhood doodads.
The Hayden-Harnett store is comfortably situated between my apartment and my favorite breakfast place ever, so I’m there at least once a week.
I’ve been obsessing over this vintage ring at the counter. The black metal would take up a good third of my finger and it’s punctuated by pin-head size pieces of glass. It was gone by the time I went back for it and I’m obviously still not over it.
But then I saw this one by VintageFilligree, and it’ll do just fine.
It looks Victorian but it’s size is modern. I love a big ring that’s still feminine and it’s hard to find something funky that stops just short of making me look like I’m gearing up for a fight.
Then again, if I do get in a fight, it can’t hurt.
We’ve been meaning to do a DIY brooch before spring hits.
Ideally, the floral accent would be simple, chic, everyday appropriate, not at all reminiscent of Carrie, and less than $20.00.
Unfortunately, work has been seriously cutting into arts and crafts time, so we’re going to buy this one from designer Foundling. She, appropriately, uses all recycled materials for pieces that aren’t cheesy or overly crafty.
These poppy brooches are made from vintage silk blouses and recycled glass beads and come in a handful of colors. We’ll be pinning the butter yellow one onto our navy linen scarf come May.
Now if we could just skip the April showers on our way into Spring.
We love the crazy, swirly designs that came from the London runways.
But sometimes (ok, almost all of the time,) it’s a little weird to show up to work looking like Fred Flinstone.
Our solution, as always? Say it with accessories.
We scouted out this perfectly colorful and slightly trippy ring from Vermont designer BrokenFingersArt.
Even though each ring is only $13, each one is made to order, so put in your request fast if you want to pair it with the perfect little white dress come May.
Maybe you could even convince them to change the colors since they’re custom made? Just saying…
Fashion week was, among other things, a blur of stacked Cartier Love bracelets, stacked wooden heels, and stacked Bulgari rings.
In all the above cases, more is better, and if you can afford to pile on two out of the above three, then you can stop reading.
We found these perfectly stack-able rings by Canadian designer Kate Szabone. The best part? You get five of them to go stack crazy, for $50.
You can custom pick your own set, from gold, silver and oxidized silver. And while the edges might not be engraved with “BVLGARI,” they’re actually a much cooler shape and not quite as flashy.
They’re perfect twenty-four hour jewelry.
Just in case your watch doesn’t go with that outfit.
We already mentioned that Coca-Cola is sponsoring the famed Heart Truth fashion show.
The annual event features very famous ladies in blood red gowns by very famous designers. Expect lots of Coca-Cola ads and models sipping Diet Coke instead of the usual tap water.
We’re getting sponsored by Coke too - well sort of. Aside from the multiple cans we’ll be drinking to buzz through the week, we’ll also be wearing this Diet Coke charm bracelet from designer madefromtheheart.
The heart charms are cut from recycled cans (bonus green points!), with foam backing so you don’t cut yourself.
It’ll match our Lady Grey bone bangles and make a little sound every time we wave our hand - the real reason we stack bracelets anyway.
We’re always looking for ways to drop subtle hints with our clothing.
That’s why we’re so into this simple charm necklace from Stereoette.
We suggest wearing it around boyfriends/boyfriend prospects against a solid and striking background like a purple tee, to make the charm and its message as clear as possible - you’ve always wished you were the girl in romantic comedies, right?
The best part? You could totally DIY the charm into any color (polka dots, maybe?) with a little spray paint and innovation.
And if you’re really handy in that arena, you could even figure out a way to hang the little frog from one of Marc’s chunky charm bracelets.
