Ruben Toledo Talks It Out

nordstromsas1-thumb.jpgWe’re not big on envy, but we can’t help but feel a touch toward Ruben Toledo.

He’s not just married to his high-school sweetheart who happens to be fashion icon Isabel Toledo, he also has talent by the bucketfuls.

Ever since his eerie, disproportionate ads for Nordstrom, we’ve been jealous of his creepy, kitschy illustration style. Not to mention, he’s the proud owner of one of the most memorable moustaches since Salvador Dali - or Hamish - and for that we’re twice as envious.

So lucky for us, he’s speaking on October 29 at FIT. He’ll talk about art and fashion and also about his wife Isabel and how her influence affects his work and why he thinks “collaboration is the name of the game.”

Shop Talk at MAC & Milk

mac&milkpaneldiscussion.JPGYesterday afternoon MAC’s John Demsey and Milk’s Mazdack Rassi hosted a panel discussion for Parsons and FIT students in the studio that was the site of so many shows this past week.

First, let us just say kudos to the two. MAC & Milk was a huge success in my opinion. It was such a more serene atmosphere than the agita-inducing tents. The staff was incredibly helpful. PR people told us it was drama-free and easy to stage their shows and presentations. There were no nightmarish elevator or temperature situations (two of our big concerns). My only real complaint was the patchy internet service I sometimes got inside on the second floor. A girl’s gotta Tweet!! But all in all, it was a job very, very well done. Let’s do it again in February!

Back to yesterday’s interesting panel, moderated by the hilarious Suzy Menkes and including Rassi, Jack & Lazaro, Humberto Leon and Caral Lim from Opening Ceremony, Parsons Dean of Fashion Simon Collins, and Alexander Wang.

Kanye West is Sort of a Model Now

kanye west at band of outsiders.jpgBefore I got to the Band of Outsiders presentation, Kanye West got a little silly and started posing with some of the models.

Even though I wasn’t there, we still have this photo as proof (well, sort of, this was taken right after Kanye got up from that bench), thanks to an FIT student named David who desperately wanted to share this with the class GG style.

Thanks, David.

And now, we’re about to be late to Jeremy Laing.

Talk soon.

Mondrian, Everywhere

more mondrian.jpgFor reasons unknown, the Mondrian-inspired clothes just keeps rolling in -

First, a reader sent in the DVF dress at left in response to yesterday’s Mondrian-inspired finds. Then, Kyle sent us a text saying that he spotted a Mondrian-inspired Louboutin in the window of the FIT museum.

And in our Inbox this morning? A Mondrian-inspired tee from Topman.

What’s next, color-blocked sunglasses from Marc?

I Met Giorgio Armani and All I Got Was This Stupid T-shirt

armani pic.jpgArmani’s talk at FIT is already over, and here are the only Giorgio highlights, other than the free shirts (at left) handed out at the end -

“You live in a city where you can practically eat fashion.”

“Not everything that is new is beautiful.”

“Make sure the clothes you design are wearable, no third arms or third legs.”

“I just fell into fashion by chance.”

“What I’ve done up until now is work to improve the way men and women look.”

Do you think he designed this t-shirt to make us look better?

“Giorgio Armani at FIT, Right Now.”

Armani More proof that we’re the fashion Gossip Girl:

Random FIT students keep sending us camera phone photos of celebrities.

At left is our latest acquisition, a photo of Giorgio Armani sitting on an FIT panel on Seventh Avenue, taken about fifteen minutes ago.

Superintern Brett is on the case, and he’ll be back with a full report later.

In the meantime, let’s discuss whether Mr. Armani’s super power is a Kriptonic orange glow also known as perma-tan…

Goodbye Gallagher’s

old vogue cover.jpgAttention designers, fashion students, interns and magazine addicts: Gallagher’s on 12th Street is (almost) officially no more.

WWD reports that the 17-year old basement store, piled high with what seems like every copy of every magazine ever (they have over a million editions), will close up at the end of this week, due to a steep rise in rent.

The Gallaghers are moving their archive to their barn in the Catskills, and you can still buy certain editions from Vintage Magazines.

We have no idea where design assistants will go to flip through old issues of Charm, but we guess Gimbel Library (Parsons) and Gladys Marcus Library (FIT) might get a lot more interesting people hanging out in the study cubicles now.
