Is the New: DvF & Cash Cab

I’m always desperate to land in the Cash Cab, but scooting into the backseat of a Diane von Furstenburg driven taxi would work, too. She’s launching eyewear today, a collection of sunglasses in homage to her most famous dress silhouettes (we’re not sure how that works, but it’s what they say), and in honor of the debut, Diane’s filmed this Taxi TV commercial.

You can enter to win a pair of glasses, or even an entire resort look, on the DvF Facebook page right now. If you win the pink ones, or get in the Cash Cab, we’ll be jealous.

Louis Live, Too

louis vuitton goes live stream ss10.jpgEveryone’s doing it.

Louis Vuitton just announced that they’ll hop on the live stream bandwagon and broadcast their SS10 show, too.

Burberry did it in their stores, Dolce and Gabanna (and D&G) did it online, but ever the exclusive ones, Louis Vuitton will broadcast it on their Facebook page only. The show will stay up for just twenty-four hours and then slideshows will have to satisfy you.

So pencil in ten minutes in front of a computer next Wednesday, October 7th at 2:30pm in Paris which means 8:30am in New York or way too early in California. And don’t forget the night before, Alexander McQueen’s broadcasting his show, called “Plato Atlantis” at 8:30pm Paris time (which you can translate accordingly).

It all makes the hurt of not actually being in Paris slightly more bearable.

Time Traveling With Betsey Johnson

betsey johnsons video archives.jpgWe like Betsey Johnson now, but we loved Betsey Johnson fifteen years ago, which is why we spent last night watching these vintage videos instead of True Blood.

Her team’s uploaded an insane archive, dating back to 1978 when Betsy debuted her namesake label and sent gyrating models down the runway in neon satin dresses with major side ponytails and shoulders I’ll call Balmain even though I’m aware they weren’t that back then.

You can catch Steven Tyler and Marc Jacobs walking her runway, as well as Pat Field, Bjork and of course, the famous ending cartwheel.

There are ten videos posted so far through the eighties and into the early nineties, and they’ll be adding more on a daily basis on Youtube, their Facebook page and via Twitter.

You Wanted to Poke Pilati…

ysl manifesto.jpgFor this, the fifth edition of the YSL Manifesto, the brand has finally decided to take things online.

In preparation they’ve launched both a Facebook page and a Twitter account to increase their online social networking presence and prepare their fans for the launch of a ‘microsite’ on September 1st which will store archives of past manifestos, a manifesto blog monitor, links to their new online sites and eventually a downloadable copy of the manifesto.

But before you get your hands on the actual publication, you’ll have the chance to watch the behind the scenes video of Inez & Vinoodh’s shoot with Christy Turlington. And then finally, on September 12th, you can snag a copy of the manifesto mid-Fashion Week. Though honestly, we still haven’t figured out their favorite corners.

But Lancôme is partnering with the darling designer for the next shade in their Pout-à-Porter series. Past collaborations include ones with Behnaz Sarafpour, Thakoon, Proenza Schouler, and Peter Som.

This time around the cosmetics company is giving all you guys a chance to help name the shade (which will be worn by models at Chris’ show in September.)

If you win, you’ll also snag a $500 gift certificate and a bunch of the lipsticks which is a very good thing as all the others have sold out almost immediately. One of the Proenza Pinks even sold for over $120 on eBay!

Just head over to Chris’s Facebook fan page to post your suggestion by 5 pm EST on July 12th.

Networking It

naomicampbelltalenthouse.jpgJust what the world needs, right…another online community. But this one has us at least mildly intrigued.

Launching today, Talenthouse.com is a site for the creative and artistic. You can upload your art, designs, music etc onto your profile and it will also link up with Facebook, MySpace and the like.

I guess the point is that it’s a more focused, niche community and who are we to knock anything that lets people get their creative work out in front of more people. Their soft launch has already garnered 25,000 members and they’re hoping that number will grow to a million.

Naomi Campbell is on board as a supporter. As is Stephen Dorff, which is super duper random. But the name that made us take notice is director Fernando Meirelles. Because City of God might just be one of the most amazing movies EVER.

If you guys join up, let us know how goes.

One Love

onedresswithpinksash.jpgDesigner Malcolm Harris hung up on Angelina Jolie twice when she called him up to order some dresses.

You know, because usually when you answer the phone, the most famous actress in the world is not on the other end. Maybe he should have asked to speak to Maddox for confirmation?

Anyway, he finally believed it was the real Angie and took her order for three of his One-Dress - which got us wondering about said dress.

Turns out that Harris spent about a year and a half gathering the opinions of women, via social networking outlets like Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, and ASmallWorld, about everything from fabric to cut to color and then created the One-Dress.

You can wear it in a million different ways and it’s meant for every body shape. Check out the website to see options that people have come up with. As you’d expect, some are great and some are not.

We can actually imagine Angelina working something nice out. Plus, there’s totally a humanitarian aspect which we’re sure is how she came to find it in the first place. A chunk of the proceeds go to Womankind Worldwide and KIVA.org.

All in all, kind of a cool thing.

VS on FB

doutzenvictoriassecret.jpgWe usually learn about a new fan page on the book of faces by seeing it in our “suggestions” or noticing that a friend has become a “fan.” That’s not how Victoria’s Secret rolls at all.

They do big productions with angels and supermodels. Even if it is just to launch a Facebook page.

Instead, Alessandra and Doutzen will be at the store on Lex this Monday morning to make the announcement about the company’s official fan page.

The girls are also accepting VS’s Webby Award later that night at Cipriani.

Tech boys everywhere are very, very happy.

Is the New: Holt Renfrew & Lane Crawford

holt renfrew.jpgHolt Renfrew - think Barneys, but north, doesn’t need a street style blogger to shoot their ad campaign, but they do need a Canadian to write for them.

They’re launching a contemporary style blog and looking for three fashionable boggers to report on and take pictures of fashion events in Montreal, Toronto and Vancouver for the next five months. You have until May 28th to log on and submit two hundred words, plus a picture, explaining why you’re perfect for the job.

Six finalists will tackle a handful of fashion competitions before the department store’s Facebook fans pick one winner from each city. And of course you can’t blog without a computer so just in case you don’t have one of those they’ll give you a Sony VAIO.

And for all the parties you’ll have to attend? A $1000 Holt Renfrew gift card - which is enough for almost one whole Stella dress.

Tim Gunn Gets His Tide On

tim gunn for tide.jpgLast summer, Tide announced that Tim Gunn would be their new spokes-
person.

We finally saw his “Dressing to the Sevens” video and it is a gem.

In it, Tim talks about how your clothes need to do more than just fit correctly and make the perfect first impression - they also have to be clean. He gives solid advice, like to go through your closet and throw away any stained articles of clothing or anything that has, “more pills than a bottle of aspirin.”

And the way he basically says, “Treat your clothes with respect, hang them up, fold them etc.” is way nicer than the way my mom used to say it.

CNN: Rap on the Wrap Dress

dvf.JPGIn case you didn’t get enough of Diane Von Furstenberg in her Amex commercial, CNN has you covered.

Tomorrow night, on Revealed, DVF will spill her soul about how she will be forever associated with the wrap dress, the Wonder Woman project and, if we’re lucky, secrets about secret CFDA projects.

The super fun part though is CNN’s call for testimonials about buying a 70’s era wrap dress and how much it means to you. So if you love your jersey frocks and want to express your love to Diane (the best ones will go on the air) leave a message on CNN’s Facebook, or email them at revealed@cnn.com.

And more importantly, tune in online to watch Revealed, or find out when you can watch it on TV.

Best Part? The copy refers to her as a German Socialite - wonder what she’d say about that.

Add DVF as Your Friend

DVF IMAGE.JPGDid you know Diane Von Furstenberg has her own Facebook page?

You probably did. But did you know you can now use it for sales?

Apparently, she’s trying to really reach out to the youth, kind of like Obama, and look at where that led him.

If you search “DVF” and click on her fan page, you’ll see this pretty DVF graphic offering 30% off over the next five days on Fall ready-to-wear and accessories (we hope that includes the comic book). If you’re not on Facebook for some reason, just enter FACEBOOKSALE on DVF.com at checkout.

We’re delighted that Diane’s tapping into the youth market in a way that actually works with youth, especially since we don’t want her pretty wrap dresses to go away with our mother’s generation. Here’s to hoping for what we think is the next logical step, sales or design previews popping up on your newsfeed, because wouldn’t you love to read, “Those Miu Miu flats on your Net-a-Porter wish list are now on sale” first thing in the morning?

The Thing About Stylista..

stylista judges.jpgLike you, we watched the premiere of Stylista last night. And probably like you, we were left… unsettled.

Can we be frank? Good. Because this is getting kind of weird. It was all fun and games when Nina Garcia decided to be a judge on a show that used to be genuinely good, and all she did was give her professional opinion while sitting neat and tidy in her director’s chair, occasionally trading jokes with Michael and Heidi, which was cute.

Then when Kelly Cutrone joined the Hills cast, it was just like “ha ha” cool, because, after all, she is a publicist - as in, publicist - and she truly did not attempt to act any differently than she does in real life, which on MTV, is admirable. (We’re not even touching The Fashionista Diaries at this time - and ANTM never felt shocking since the judges on the show are hardly industry members anyway.)

But now what was once fun and games has hit a bona fide fever pitch, with the Style Channel’s new The Stylist, MTV’s Model Makers, and of course, Whitney Port’s new spinoff, The City, in which she works for an actual designer who’ll probably be on camera a total of ten seconds by season’s end. But we doubt any of these will hit home the way Stylista did last night.

Because the thing is, everyone knows these people. You’ve either seen them out, seen their work, worked with them or maybe for them, and you definitely know what they actually walk / talk / look / dress like, so watching them play their own caricature was a little like seeing your little sister’s Facebook - disturbing.

(And can we just add here that when it came out that contestant Megan is co-owner of Addict on 12th St, we literally involuntarily yelled, “WHAT?!” to the screen.)

No one expects reality television to be real, so these real, recognized people with real jobs playing their tele-real versions is kind of like getting robbed in your home - you can’t believe it’s happening, and you keep asking yourself, “is this really happening?” Because dear reader, it’s not. At least, not really.

Lauren Conrad, Fashion Blogger?

lauren conrad hand puppet.jpgAnd you thought Faran was a flake.

Today, Lauren Conrad announced a new partnership with College Tonight, a social networking site aimed at campus communities.

Not only will Lauren be paid a lot to blog her opinions on the site, she’s also being given her own opportunity to showcase her style, and of course, her burgeoning fashion line, which she’s aligned with ShopIntuition in order to drive eCommerce.

Now, we think Lauren Conrad should absolutely take advantage of every business opportunity possible, and so if an internet company offers her a gig, cool -

But we can’t help noticing: Lauren’s life on The Hills seems a lot more like Juicy Campus, not some sanitized attempt at the social networking that Facebook and MySpace already enable college kids to do.

But maybe that kind of tawdry network is more of a Heidi endeavor?

Louis Vuitton Infiltrates Facebook

lv facebook.jpg We’re not financial analysts, but if we had to point out the one Achilles Heel of Facebook, it’s this:

Brands can basically advertise for free on the site by creating “applications” that ostensibly function as ads.

Witness the “TopShop Fashion Fix” application (one of Faran’s favorites), where every time you click, a new stream of TopShop outfits are unloaded onto your screen - then you vote on your favorites, and challenge your friends to do the same.

There are hundreds of others, but the latest is particularly interesting:

The Louis Vuitton application.

You send Louis Vuitton “gifts” to your friends - basically just graphics of expensive and very branded LV merchandise - then wait for them to do the same thing back to you. The more “gifts” you get, the more Louis Vuitton stuff appears on your profile - and the more “gifts” you send, the more new “merchandise” you’re allowed to preview.

Setting up this application probably cost the Louis Vuitton people $5000 - assuming they hired an outside techie and didn’t get the LVMH in-house computer team to design it. Meanwhile, they’ll make hundreds of thousands of virtual dollars back in brand extension, product placement, and the priceless experience of getting young men and women to interact with their brand, even if they’re not setting foot in an LV boutique.

We’d go so far as to say Facebook is losing money by allowing branded applications to exist on its network. But whatever, as long as we can play Scrabulous, we don’t really care.

PS: If you haven’t joined the Fashionista Facebook group, there’s really no excuse by now!
