Now we know many of you, not unlike some of us, are a little over it when it comes to the First Lady and her style choices.
And of course, the work she does is incredibly more important than which Michael Kors sheath she chooses for an appearance. But you can’t ignore the fact that, like it or not, she garners major press every time she makes a move.
Now she’s made perhaps her boldest decision since the Jason Wu Inaugural Ball dress by chopping off her hair into a much shorter bob, which I for one think is incredibly chic.
What interests me more will be whether or not this translates into a national trend like those inspired by Victoria Beckham, Jennifer Aniston, and Farrah Fawcett.
It’s even got the potential to go international.
UPDATE: Okay, so apparently it’s not a cut, just a rather brilliant updo. But we would highly recommend she go for this look on a permanent basis. We love it more now than we did this morning.
Farrah Fawcett’s recent death is still inspiring odes to her famous locks. We’ve already rhapsodized on how much we love Farrah, but this got us all thinking about other 1970s hair icons.
Since it’s summer, the first lady that came to mind was Bo Derek, running on the beach in 10.
Farrah had the blown-out voluminous curls. Bo was on the other end of the spectrum with her sleek cornrows.
Sure it’s a beach-associated style, but we’re actually of the belief that an incredibly wide range of people can work it with confidence, even on the isle of Manhattan. Hell, even David Beckham looked great in them back in 2003 (okay, actually, David Beckham basically always looks good.)
Looking for a way to spice up your hairstyle? Give cornrows a second look. Now, if we could look that good in a nude bathing suit…

So, you gotta figure there’s going to be a new rush on those red leather jackets (both the Beat It and the Thriller versions) right?
I just popped over to Ebay and there definitely weren’t as many for sale as I’d expected. Maybe sellers are hanging onto them now or perhaps that run already happened this morning.
The zipper jacket is definitely the more iconic of the two, and the one I’d snag if I was a collector. There seem to be a plethora of replicas of the other style, somewhat diluting its specialness.
If you’ve got an extra two grand lying around and yesterday’s events have stirred a long-forgotten Jackson obsession, head here now. It looks pretty real deal to me.
On the other hand, originals of the famous Farrah poster are running around $100, with signed copies going as high as $500.
Not to turn Fashionista into a sad place, but another style icon did pass away yesterday and we should give her some props, too.
Farrah Fawcett was definitely one of the greatest beauty icons of all time. Really, who didn’t want to look like that lady at some point in life? Especially in the red Norma Kamali bathing suit, with perfectly tousled and feathered hair.
As much as Michael Jackson represented the 80s, Farrah was the 70s.
As a former beauty editor, I can’t even count the number of times that I referenced “The Farrah” (or the “Jill Munroe” as my Charlie’s Angels-obsessed self preferred) and worked on creating updated versions on set with a hair stylist and a model.
“The Rachel” was nothing in comparison to what this ‘do did to the nation. I’m pretty sure all of my mom’s friends (um, and their daughters) tried to rock it out at some point. And it was 100% percent American, worn by a girl from small town Texas.
Now, we love our Brazilians, eastern Europeans, and Russians as much as any model-philes, but Farrah had that quintessential All-American beauty that we actually don’t see very often on the runways these days.
Perhaps it’s time for a revival. Just a thought.
