On the Job: Stephanie Winston Wolkoff, former director of special events for Vogue, just landed a new position. She’ll be the director of Fashion Week for Lincoln Center when it moves in September 2010, “consulting on internal and external coordination between Lincoln Center and the fashion industry.” But the question is, who can she steal back from MAC? {FWD}

Still Haunting: Alison Sarofim’s Halloween party brings out fashion’s best and brightest. This year’s theme was downtown New York circa 1980’s; Marc and Lorenzo were dutifully costumed while Valentino opted for a spot-on Valentino look. {VanityFair}

The Fruits of Their Labor

fruit etc ss2010.jpgThese past few weeks we’ve seen a resurgence of all things juvenile. From pigtails at Prada to side braids at Wang, girlish hairstyles are a go for spring, but it doesn’t stop at the head.

Tao, Moschino, YSL and Ungaro embraced the youthful phenomenon in their Spring collections. Each designer topped their ready-to-wear with prints that would make any little girl giddy. Tao and YSL chose strawberries while Moschino opted for cherries (as did Anna Dello Russo on her feet all week). The playful prints are charming and romantic, stopping just short of saccharine, but the reviews weren’t, to put it mildly, nearly as positive at Ungaro.

Quote of the Day

“The gold is just enough to spice up any outfit for a special occasion, like a date with your favorite vampire or werewolf, or just for your everyday dreams.” —MTV’s Twilight Fashion Week reporter on Nordstrom’s new collection of Twi-gear.
Spring 2010 New York

“Despite the current economic apocalypse, there are still places where semi-employed journalists like myself can suckle at the teat of an open bar, subside for days on passed hors d’oeuvres, and listen to the plaintive rumblings of famished supermodel stomachs, even when the DJ is playing Lady Gaga really loud. They’re called Fashion Week parties.” —Chris Wilson, Gawker’s new Fashion Week writer.

The Night Before

sonia sundance proenza.jpgFashion Week unofficially kicked off last night in a small screening room at Norwood packed with Vogue-ettes, socialites, Rachel & Rodger & Brad, Lorenzo, Nathalie Rykiel, Jack, Lazaro, Leighton Meester, Patrick McMullan and the Trainas.

Sundance Channel screened the first episode of The Day Before, the documentary style show that follows designers for the thirty-six mad hours leading up to their runway show. It was, as past fashion documentaries have proven, hilarious, stressful and fun to watch - there’s even a bit with a dog.

Before the screening Jack swore, “We never fight,” with a twinkle in his eye.

Lazaro jumped in to clarify, “In the end, if he sees a black collection and I see white, it’ll be gray.”

Lily Rages

lily cole in rage.jpgSally Potter, the renowned British filmmaker, takes on the fashion industry in her newest film Rage.

The film poses as a series of interviews shot by a young boy on his camera phone at New York Fashion Week. Behind the scenes he stumbles upon the craziest of the fashion crowd; Jude Law and Lily Cole play models, Judi Dench plays the fashion critic, Eddie Izzard’s the money and John Leguizamo’s his bodyguard.

Someone’s shot in the trailer and it looks as though a satirical fashion forward version of Clue ensues. The movie premieres via satellite September 24th, details here.

Internships

Help Halston

carrie in halston.jpgNothing like waiting until the very last minute!

Halston needs Fashion Week interns, which basically means they need you to start Tuesday morning and help them with their presentation.

This means dressing models, sitting at the front of house during buying appointments and assisting both the PR and sales teams. It’s unpaid (duh), but it’s such a small company that you’ll get some serious hands on experience.

You obviously have to be in New York (or willing to come here and put yourself up next week) and should be a super fast, enthusiastic learner. Prior experience a plus, love of fashion high energy and awesome attitude are a must.

Send a very brief cover letter and your resume to internships@halston.com, Attn: Lisa.

Magazines

The Daily Does Jersey

christine staub fwdaily cover maybe.jpgphoto courtesy FWDOn its most basic level, Fashion Week means heels, ‘wichcraft and The Daily - the industry mag pumped full of juicy gossip and pretty pictures that occupies the hungry, waiting crowds.

It’s usually covered by a model, sometimes a designer or last year even Glenn O’Brien as the face of Interview’s mess. But this year we hear an entirely different type of person might grace a cover - Danielle from The Real Housewives of New Jersey and her recently signed to IMG daughter, Christine.

And in a weird Housewife twist, the mother daughter pair was shot by Gilles Bensimon. Half the shoot was solely Christine and if any of this actually does make a cover, we’ll bet on her solo appearance.

No word on just how jealous Kelly is right now.

Internships

For Pete’s Sake

style sightings internship.jpgWe’ve probably said this at least three times by now, but really, this is a dream internship.

Like, if you’re in school, we’d highly recommend skipping eight days of class (well only six because two are weekend days) and getting yourself to New York to hang out with the photographers of StyleSightings. They need a Fashion Week intern to help photograph parties, shows, cool people etc. for the street style site.

Peter [Miszuk] suggests you “know something somewhat about cameras,” but we’d suggest knowing a bit more. If you question whether or not you know enough, you probably don’t. You should also be super into fashion and the people behind it, ie. you should be able to recognize the major players.

Plus, you need to be excited, enthusiastic, friendly, personable and fun to hang with.

If that’s you, email stylesightings@stylesight.com and we’ll see you around.

Life With...

Life With Who What Wear!

WWW katharine and hillary.jpgWe’ve interviewed stylists and editors and publicists and designers, but we’ve never entered the world of blogging, or even the internet for a Life With.

So welcome to the world of Who What Wear.

We know you love their site. We love their site. And I made it a priority to sit down with Hillary Kerr and Katherine Power while in LA at the end of July to learn how they left the world of print and moved onto the internet. And more importantly, how they ended up putting together one of the most successful fashion sites among the millions.

Inside, how they blew up, where they’re going and what the launch of their book means
to them.

Black Frame Needs Helping Hands

nick kirkwood shoes from j and j.jpgPhoto from Jak&JilBlack Frame, the PR company whose client list includes Rodarte, Nicholas Kirkwood, Opening Ceremony, Viktor & Rolf and Visionaire, needs both interns and Fashion Week volunteers.

The good news is you don’t have to be a college student for either one, but you should have some fashion industry experience for both. As an intern, you’ll need to commit to at least three months starting now. You’ll help track and organize samples and press clippings and you should love fashion and be an excellent communicator and team player, especially under pressure.

Rodarte Curates Colette

rodarte to collette.jpgIf there were a fashion retail scale, Target would be on one side and Colette the other.

And yet, just weeks after announcing their collaboration with the former, Kate and Laura Mulleavy of Rodarte announced their work with the latter.

This October, they’ll curate an exhibition of their favorite things for Sarah Lerfel’s concept store in Paris. The sisters have consistently boasted the most impressive, obscure and yet still viable list of inspirations and we’re guessing this project will do a pretty good job of encapsulating what, in their lives, produces such dreamy clothes.

Elettra Weidemann for G-Star

elettra for gstar.jpgElettra Wiedemann’s landed a new campaign for fall.

Isabella Rossellini’s daughter has posed for Abercrombie & Fitch, Bill Blass, Samsonite, Lancôme, Hogan and now, adding to what might be the most scattered modeling portfolio ever, she’s the face of G-Star Raw’s AW09 collection.

She’ll star in their print ads through December; they chose her since she represents “hardcore luxury.” And to strengthen their rock n’ roll vision, the denim brand’s enlisted photographer Anton Corbijn who also directed Control, the Joy Division biopic starring Sam Riley who went on to front Burberry with Rosie Huntington-Whitley.

Now we wonder if Elettra will walk G-Star’s runway at Hammerstein Ballroom on September 15th. She might be a constant Fashion Week presence, but we’ve never seen her tackle a runway.

Fetherston’s Film Debut

Scratch that.

Erin Fetherston’s short film, Birds of a Fether, just premiered on Style.com. The four minute piece features Paz de la Huerta, Ingrid Schram, Daria Strokous, all-girl punk band Effi Briest and a bevy of models following Erin throughout the West Village. Director Marisa Crawford imagined the designer as a pied piper-like leader and her collection couldn’t be more perfect for the fantasy.

If you’d rather see Erin’s clothes in person, you can log on to Shopbop and win a three day trip to New York, two tickets to Erin’s SS10 show, $1000 shopping spree to Shopbop and $400 spending money for your days in New York.

Questions & Queries

ss10 fashion week calendar.jpgFive questions for the Fashion Week calendar:

1. Why is a man named Cesar Galindo going up against both Anna Wintour and the Mayor of New York City by staging a runway show in the middle of Fashion’s Night Out? And how does he have that much money to throw away? Also, is he related to Rudy Galindo?

2. Why does Vladimir Roitfeld get a box on Tuesday September 15th (which, by the way, he shares with DSquared2 which is interesting)? His event, or whatever it is, lasts from 6-11 and overlaps with Narciso’s show.
