Be Italian: We totally agree on the Penny Lane girl crush of course. We can’t even describe the levels of excitement we have for Nine. And Kate never fails to look super cute. Seriously this press tour is going to be out of control fashion-wise. {WhoWhatWear}
Not That Lisa Kline: But the one who styled Sarah and the rest of the Palin clan during the campaign finally comes out to clear the air. And she was asked to do the big makeover during a holiday weekend. Yikes on so many levels. {NY Times}
Change the Date: Fashion’s Night Out is moving to Friday September 10th so that you can drink champagne, shop, and shotgun beers all night long without having to show up for work the next morning. Sweet. {WWD}
That’s Me in the Corner: I (Abby) remember when all my REM tunes were actually on cassette tape. Hence I was automatically drawn to this one-off collaboration between Michael Stipe and Maison Martin Margiela. Though I don’t think I would try wearing it as an eye patch as someone in the shot did. {Racked}
Vogue.TV just launched their new series, 60 Seconds to Chic.
It’s hosted by Louise Roe, who used to host videos for Vogue UK before moving to America and trying, maybe, to follow in Cat Deeley’s footsteps.
This first episode features winter boots (in fact, it’s almost like a commercial for Sorrel), but styled for different winter occasions including a night out. Louise, who’s credited as a Vogue.TV ‘stylist’ pairs short furry galoshes with a black mini-dress and sequin jacket which sounds cozy, but awkward, kind of like when I wore galoshes with a dress on fashion’s night out and then it didn’t rain. Would you actually wear winter boots to dinner with your cocktail dress? Even if Vogue says it’s ok?
We are very happy to hear that Fashion’s Night Out will be back, on September 9, 2010 to be exact.
Before the big night this year, we wondered what it would really be like and if people would indeed shop. As it turned out, many, many did and it was considered a success by most. And according to ShopperTrak, retail foot traffic was up by 50%.
Anna Wintour says, “It was only 15 minutes after the event began, and we were getting reports about lines around the block at stores throughout the city. It was wonderful to see people embrace this initiative, and we are thrilled that they wish it to return.”
Agreed, Anna. Really, FNO was one of the most fun evenings I’ve had in a long time. The city felt alive and united, which I honestly didn’t expect. And the fact that it was the night before 9/11 made my heart swell with New York pride. Plus, I watched dudes shotgun beers in the middle of the Prada store. So there’s that.
No serious details have been announced yet and there’s more than enough time to plan. So what would you do differently in 2010?
Back in June, when I last wrote about consumer confidence levels, I said I was starting to feel a positive retail shift. Yeah, this is probably why it’s a good thing that I don’t do economic forecasting for a living. My hunches are about as reliable as my sense of direction.
And in this case, that’s a real bummer. While Fashion’s Night Out was clearly a success in boosting morale, and in many cases sales for the night, the reality of fashion’s retail situation is still murky at best. The newest numbers released about how consumers are feeling are not so positive, and the people that are paid to analyze such things don’t think there will be much of a significant upswing anytime soon, regardless of the fact that most economists are claiming the recession generally over.
A senior credit officer tells WWD, “There’s been this fundamental shift of people going back to saving and repaying debt. Some of what drove retail growth four or five years ago was really just a bubble of readily available consumer credit.” And that makes a whole lot of sense to me. And while not helpful to struggling fashion businesses, probably a better way to live and not slide back into even worse debt.
photo from modelinia!Last night, at 8, I ran out of Julie Haus’ Kate Lanphear-styled show and into the madness that was Fashion’s Night Out.
The streets of Soho were packed with people who weren’t just shopping, but had properly decked themselves out for the Vogue sponsored occasion. From top to toe they rocked Balmain-shouldered blazers and chunky jewels with booties and their official Fashion’s Night Out tees.
I swung into Intermix, pre-Rihanna & Millers, where it was so packed that even though I wanted a grey Kain tank, I couldn’t make my way to the register. Outside I found Keegan Singh staring into space, more overwhelmed than I at the growing crowds. Then Eddie Borgo found us and I gushed over Jen Kao’s show (on which they both worked, more to come later). We split and I (stupidly) hopped in a cab uptown to Barneys, a veritable frat house full of models, socialites, designers and the most fashion forward children I’ve ever seen - all of them laden with shopping bags.
We hear there are three groups for tomorrow’s Demarchelier shoot in front of the Tents. You know the one for Vogue with 100 models in their FNO tees. If you’re looking for the top girls, they’re most likely in group C…and they’ve got an 8:30 am call time. We’re at events all morning but feel free to send us snapshots!
The only thing more daunting that Fashion Week is turning out to be Fashion’s Night Out.
We’ve probably received fifteen to twenty emails per day since July telling us what’s up, who’s coming, where’s happening Thursday night and after much deliberation we’ve come up with a game plan.
Given there are really only two of us, splitting up’s the only way to cover the most ground without exhausting ourselves before the week actually even begins (and without spending all of our money before Christopher Kane hits Topshop).
I’ll run home for dinner after work which strategically puts me on Bleecker Street to start. I’ll kick off the night with Teen Vogue’s Bleecker Street party then swing by Intermix to glimpse the Miller sisters (and to actually buy a couple of tank tops I’ll need for the week) before swinging around the corner to Rag & Bone on Christopher Street where Jessica Stam’ll be at the cash register and Guinness will flow.
It feels like everyone in New York is doing something for Fashion’s Night Out which means our inbox is flooded and the only way to easily distinguish between actual fashion week invites and Fashion’s Night Out press releases is to hit delete.
But we hesitated over Longchamp’s hoping, thinking maybe for a second that Kate Moss would be in town to host their September 10th bash.
She’s not, but Lily Cole is.
Their new fall collection’s called Gatsby and Michael Arenella & his Dreamland Orchestra will play a jazz set in honor of the theme before Lykke Li DJs the rest of the night.
How we’ll work this in between everything else, we’re not sure. But we’ll layout our divide and conquer plans on the 9th.
The Puppet Show: Fashion finger puppets are coming our way thanks to the kids at Rubbish. Put us down for one mini ALT. {NY Times}
What’s Your Damage? A while back we heard that Heathers was coming to Broadway. Today comes news that it’s getting remade for TV. {Variety}
Sporty Spice: Who knew Resurrection’s Katy Rodriguez was such a jock? Because really an unassisted triple play is pretty major. {VF Daily}
Bye Bye Birdie: Faran’s take on the stylings of Ann Margaret, Betty Draper, Mona Sterling and the rest of the Mad Men ladies in the second episode of the season. {AMC}
Wishin’ and Hopin’: If I could look like this in ripped tights and a sweater for, oh, even five minutes…life would be good. {Topshop}
Modeling Dynasty: So Cara Delevingne got a modeling contract too. But we’re more interested in the fact that Alexis Carrington is her godmother. {Vogue UK}
D-Bags Unite: A little humorous reading for your afternoon. GQ ranked the douchiest colleges in the country. I (Abby) went to the number 2 school. I love my alma mater but I can’t really argue with that ranking and am well aware of how much people hate when Blue Devils are #1. And can I just throw in a “Go to hell Carolina!” for good measure? Okay, sorry, back to fashion. {GQ}
FNO in LA: Our in-boxes are overflowing with Fashion’s Night Out emails and we’re very much looking forward to all the festivities. Sounds like the west coast was feeling a little left out, so they’re jumping in on the action too. {All the Rage}
Everyone’s psyched for Fashion’s Night Out, but everyone’s worried that no one’ll actually shop - or we were worried until we saw the official PSA.
You’d be hard pressed not to break out your wallet after listening to Sarah Jessica Parker beg and watching Diddy dance his way across the screen. Anna Wintour laughs, which is becoming less unusual, and Raquel Zimmermann hangs onto Alex Wang like a monkey to a tree and they’re all SO excited.
Suddenly, it makes sense to shell out for a PS 1 if Jack & Lazaro help pick the color or splurge on Elizabeth & James when Ashley tells you what fits best - especially since the night before Fashion Week all anyone wants are new clothes. Anyway, now we think this’ll be successful, and by successful we mean lucrative.
The official PSA, above. Outtakes, after the jump!
Model Shop: Lara Stone’ll curate the next phase of Not Just A Label, the online shop dedicated to one-off designer pieces and special limited edition products. We see leather, cigarettes and Eres in the future. {NotJustALabel}
One Track Mind: Just how many models does it take to make one night of Fashion run smoothly? About 250 apparently. Coco, Lily, Chanel & two hundred and fifty others will be stationed around the city to make your night a little bit prettier. {ImaginarySocialite}
So Un-Vogue: There’s a scene in The September Issue in which Anna takes issue with the size of the cover font, hate to see what she’d do to the staff of Vogue Brazil for misspelling Guy Bourdin’s name on their September cover. {MadeInBrazil}
Last night marked Anna Wintour’s television debut.
Vogue’s editor-in-chief landed on Letterman’s Late Night couch to promote The September Issue and Fashion’s Night Out and though CBS billed the segment as “The Devil Meets Dave,” she was, dare we say, delightful.
She starts out recommending that Dave explore Thom Browne, “He cuts his pants like really short, so you can focus entirely on the socks,” before bantering back and forth about the film, the economic state of the fashion industry, her relationship with Grace Coddington and her icy reputation. Despite looking nervous, she holds her own and even Dave seems impressed.
The best bit’s after the movie clip when she desperately tries to hold back laughter.
Again, the more excited we get for Fashion’s Night Out - it’s really going to be epic - the more worried we get about people not shopping. Sure, the stores will be packed, but no one’s going to head to the dressing rooms when they’re struggling to catch a glimpse of an Olsen or a Miller.
It’s especially weird to watch this video - in which everyone from Michael Kors and Bradley Cooper to Diane Kruger and Vera Wang discuss the fashion industry’s dire situation - while they’re decked in diamonds and their finest custom get-up for the CFDA’s.
Teen Vogue would like you to channel your Fashion’s Night Out energy into creative endeavors.
More specifically, they’re hosting a DIY contest and, well, we know how you feel about DIYs.
First, you’ll need to log onto FashionsNightOut.com to get your official t-shirt (the same one Lily Donaldson rocks in the campaign and that Anna will be signing in Queens). Then we suggest having your bedazzler ready. If you can’t quite find it in the back of your closet, be armed with some serious flare — we’re imagining rhinestones and ribbon and maybe even puff paint? We’d suggest going all out because we’re guessing this’ll be a fierce competition.
Why? The winner gets two tickets to a runway show and considering it’s Teen Vogue we’re guessing it’ll be a good one. That’s Associate Market Editor Mary Kate Steinmiller’s creation at left, can you beat it?
Fashion’s Night Out just released their prolific schedule for September 10th.
Seven hundred stores across all five boroughs will stay open until 11pm, but Anna Wintour, Michael Kors, a surprise celebrity guest and the cast of Hair will kick everything off at Macy’s six hours earlier.
At Barneys, Wool & the Gang will teach knitting while Scott Hahn & Rogan of Loomstate customize t-shirts. Zac Posen will be painting inside Bergdorf’s Fifth Avenue windows while Peter Som and Cynthia Rowley have an in-store cook-off. What are we most looking forward to (aside from the Olsens)? A fashion game hosted by Andre Leon Talley with teams led by Donna Karan, Robert Verdi and Linda Fargo.
Various contests will be held throughout the night in which one can win tickets to runway shows, haircuts by Sally Hershberger and Oscar Blandi, a custom Carolina Herrera wedding dress and the chance to be on set during a Demarchelier Vogue shoot. Cindy Crawford, Hugh Jackman, Stephanie Seymour, Sasha, Caroline, Chanel, Lily, The Misshapes, Taylor Momsen, Yasmin le Bon, Coco and Diddy are just a few of the people with planned appearances.
Don’t forget to shop while you’re out ogling your favorite fashion people!
ABC’s: Agyness Deyn’s the face of Anna Sui’s AW09 cosmetics campaign. You can buy the makeup and Sui’s new line of hair products at her Soho store, though we’d avoid whatever made Agy’s hair look like that. {BeautyCounter}
More to Love: More facts on Fashion’s Night Out, including this scary tidbit, “one-out-of-10 retail-industry employees [are] out of work.” We’ll bring you the full report on Monday so you can start making a game plan for September 10th. {WSJ}
Now We’re Talking: A few behind the scenes shots of Charlize Theron for J’Adore Dior. It’s the fragrance’s tenth anniversary and these images should put Vogue to shame. {InStyle}
Cintra-Gate: We’re pretty sure the Gray Lady writer isn’t going to put out the fire she started yesterday with her JCPenney piece with these kinds of apologies. Not that we think she really wants to. {The Cut}
1. Why is a man named Cesar Galindo going up against both Anna Wintour and the Mayor of New York City by staging a runway show in the middle of Fashion’s Night Out? And how does he have that much money to throw away? Also, is he related to Rudy Galindo?
2. Why does Vladimir Roitfeld get a box on Tuesday September 15th (which, by the way, he shares with DSquared2 which is interesting)? His event, or whatever it is, lasts from 6-11 and overlaps with Narciso’s show.
To publicize what is sure to be one of the most amazing nights September has ever seen, the CFDA is filming a PSA which will run on TV, in taxis, and online.
The spot will include well-known designers, celebrities, and models, as you would expect. But for the finale they want YOU!
Britt’s in LA this week (though heading back to us on the red-eye tonight), but if you’ll be in SoCal for the rest of the summer, circle August 20th on your calendars.
Downtown LA has a monthly Art Walk, which has shot energy and sales into the downtown gallery and art scene, and now the Los Angeles fash community is gearing up to throw a party with a Downtown Fashion Walk, where a selection of stores will be staying open late and hosting special events. We’re jealous that we won’t be around, but happy that our west coast friends get to experience something like Fashion’s Night Out, because why should us New Yorkers have all the fashion fun?
That rumor we spread about Mark Fast doing a line for Topshop? It's true. And it's in last week's Sunday Telegraph magazine which means it was true before we even said anything and we've had it in our lap since... Read More
Meet Blue Logan, if you haven't already. A couple of years ago a friend dragged the soft-spoken Brit to a show at London Fashion Week, Aquascutum he thinks, and he started to draw the models as they walked down the... Read More
