The Stylings of John Hughes

pretty_pinkpromdress.jpgFolks like me who came of age in the ’80s are having a rough go of it lately when it comes to the pop culture figures who defined our youth.

Yesterday’s sudden death of writer/director John Hughes lit up Facebook and Twitter with favorite quotes and nostalgia. This man completely defined that period for so many with Pretty in Pink, Some Kind of Wonderful, The Breakfast Club, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, and Sixteen Candles (Jake Ryan!) just to name of few of his classics. He was the voice of a generation.

It’s not just the writing that I remember, though it is pretty damn genius. But also the sartorial “voice”. I tried to recreate so many of the outfits from his movies, with often hilarious results, I must say. Of course, the first character that comes to mind is the ever eclectic Andie Walsh in Pretty in Pink. I longed to be able to fashion a groovy prom dress or wear a hat the way she could. And who didn’t dream of a quirky best friend like Duckie? Oh, sweet Duckie and his mismatched fabulousness. And let’s not forget the preppy perfection that is Blane and Stef.

Fashion Is Fun

Father O’ Mine

abbyanddad.jpgWe all know Father’s Day is this weekend. Or if this is your reminder, get to rush ordering online stat!

And this dad’s day-inspired story that Refinery29 did on their blog just made our Friday morning. They’ve got a slew of photos that staffers and fashion friends sent in of their cooler than cool dads.

Not surprisingly, Chris Benz’ dad is kinda smokin’ hot, way hip, and looks to have been shot in Cameron’s garage from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. And a little Kate Lanphear and her pop are in coordinating tanks. Aw!

Of course, it got me thinking about my own dad’s style. (That is indeed him and yours truly in the photo. He rocks that sweet ‘stache to this day…and now it’s totally in again!) You see he’s the one I got my shoe addiction from. The man loves a great pair of shoes. And he’s so much more of a clothes horse than my mom.

My favorite fashion phase was when he got super into madras in the form of shorts, pants, and blazers. Actually, I think I’m going to tell him to bring those back into rotation.

What’s your favorite dad fashion moment…good or bad?
