FrostFrench Wants Gemma, Now

gemma ward for frost french.jpgFrost French, Sadie Frost and Jemima French’s contemporary clothing line, want Gemma Ward for an ad campaign.

But they want her now, at this weight. Not later, when she’s lost it, or when she decides to get back into modeling. They want a real girl, albeit a really, really, ridiculously good-looking girl, to be the face of their brand.

It sounds like the cherry atop their rebirth sundae.

After suffering financial difficulties in 2008, the brand was rescued by a Norwegian investor within weeks and they just opened their second London store, in Soho, earlier this month, which could only be bested by a runway show in February. Their runway’s featured a Kate Moss striptease and Liberty Ross trapeze act in the past - we’d kill to see Gemma on a London Fashion Week runway.

Sounds like the balls in Gemma’s court, so cue the online encouragement please.

i-D-less?

its the end of iD as we know it.jpgThere’ve been tweets that London’s i-D Magazine is dead.

From Derek Blasberg: Gossip at Chanel lunch in Venice: did London fashion rag i-D just close? Or did it just get really, really smaller? Anybody know for sure?

He’s in Venice for Chanel resort surrounded by people who know such things.

But then there are tweets that say it’s just shrinking.

From COACD: ID MAGAZINE to cut its issue….will publish 6 times a year….Terry&Tricia Jones/ publishers.

But we imagine its publishers know such things, too. And while we want to weep over the possible loss of the magazine’s brilliant blinking covers and its consistent devotion to models, we’ll take solace in the fact that six issues a year are better than none.

And now we’ll go buy a handful of copies just in case they need a bit of support to stay afloat.

DJ Jazzy Gemma

gemma ward dj.jpgAmidst all this model madness there’s one particular doll face we’ve been missing.

We haven’t seen Gemma Ward since, well, we didn’t actually see The Black Balloon, so since the preview for The Black Balloon. Sister Sophie popped up at Australia Fashion Week, but Gemma’s all but disappeared since an Italian Vogue editorial with Lily at this time last year.

Until now - she’s DJing for the Doe Fund at The Angel Orensanz Foundation next week. Tickets, $150 here, buy you a few hours of drinking and dancing to tunes spun by Gemma, Byrdie Bell, Richie Rich, Olivia Palermo and Christian Siriano.

When you see her, tell her fashion misses her.

Gemma 09: Scrambled or Fried?

gemma ward in a fishtail.jpgEveryone’s excited that Gemma’s officially announced 2009 as the year she returns to modeling full-time (we were getting a little worried there, too.)

So, of course, we were wondering: What will she do first? Will she pop up on a New York runway in February? Or will we see her in a March issue holding a handbag, first? In an ad? In an oases?

If you know what Gemma’s first move post-Black Balloon success will be, you know to whom you should confess your burden. But in the meantime, if you just want to dream a little, please, tell us all about it, too.

Because really, we actually want to know.

Who’ll Be Famous in 2009?

gemma ward in the black balloon.jpgIn our second installment of year-end thinking, we ask you, which models do you think will be famous in 2009?

Britt’s picks:

Lara Stone: So maybe she’s been around for a bit, but she’s just now sort of everywhere. Is it weird that I hope Carine’s Loving-Lara issue puts her on Hollywood’s radar?

Gemma Ward: You probably think she’s famous already, but one more movie role and even my mom can add her to the list of current girls she knows - currently composed of just Stam and Agyness.

Natalie’s:

Arlenis: For the obvious reason of her becoming one of the new faces for Lancome and one of the VS girls, which means you won’t be able to click or turn a page without seeing her face very soon.

Lily Cole: Again, you might think she’s famous, but I think even my non-fashion friends will know Lily’s face once The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus and Phantasmagoria hit the big screen in the next year.

So, who’d we miss?

Tim Walker to Film

tim walker shot .jpgBritish fashion photographer Tim Walker’s just confirmed that he’ll branch out into film in 2009.

He’s the man behind most of Vogue UK’s fairytale-like editorials and a major contributor on Nick Knight’s ShowStudio. You know this almost iconic image of Lily Cole and the December 08 spread starring Karen Elson and Tim Burton.

His short film will debut this spring with a follow up feature length film slated for Fall 2009. No word yet on plot lines and characters but we do expect fantasy and would love for Gemma to land a role.

Between this and Tom Ford’s movie and Vogue’s Sundance debut, fashion’s officially crossed over.

Missing Persons Report: Gemma?

img revamps their site.jpgIMG’s changed their website.

We’re kind of indifferent to colors and fonts, but we’re enthralled with their new “Welcome to the World of Beautiful People” video.

Before, one was greeted with an almost perfect trifecta - Kate Moss, Daria Werbowy and Gemma Ward - now you get more, but one less.

The black and white slideshow gives screen time to Naomi, Hilary Rhoda, Stephanie Seymour (in that ridiculous POP come-back shoot), Heidi Mount, Lara Stone and Angela Lindvall, but where oh where did Gemma go?

Just because she’s disappeared from life and runways and campaigns and everything but The Black Balloon doesn’t mean she’s lost her modeling spot.

Does it?

Baby’s Black Balloon Opens Friday

Gemma Ward Black BalloonThose craving a full look at Gemma Ward’s latest film can count the days on one hand:

The Black Balloon, Gemma’s drama about an autistic little brother, opens this Friday in select American theaters.

Ward’s already been given a heap of praise and an Australian film nomination for her performance, now let’s see what the US film industry has to say -

Especially because, remember, the movie’s opening now so it can stay in contention for Oscar season.

And how fun would that red carpet be?

Jumping Gemma

We heard Gemma Ward’s next movie The Black Balloon may premier in “key” US cities sometime this October, so here’s a fun little video to add to the hype.

Gemma wore a beret to talk to Australian TV about The Black Balloon, in which she plays the cute girlfriend of a good-hearted guy, and about how she’s wanted to be an actress since she was seven. And why do we love this clip so much? Because it includes bits of Gemma jumping up and down in her little school girl outfit when she was a kid, and hamming it up for the camera for what was probably a school play audition. Amazingly, she looks exactly the same.

On a side note, we just want to point out that whenever we see videos of younger models talking, our first thought is always “wow, you are so young” since you usually don’t grasp just how young a lot of them are until they break out into fidgets and “you know” between every “like” and “yeah!” But it’s the opposite with Gemma. When she talks, she comes across as intelligent and poised, so you finally realize that she’s not, in fact, twelve.

Enjoy!

Gemma Is More Accomplished Than Liv Tyler

Gemma WardAs anyone with a MySpace account can tell you, previews for The Strangers are running everywhere.

The movie that stars Liv Tyler and features Gemma Ward in her first American movie has also launched their new website, and it’s sort of a kick:

Besides playing creepy noises every time you move your mouse, the site also features a biography section where you can read about the cast.

Liv Tyler’s bio includes her fifteen years of film roles, and takes about a minute to read.

Meanwhile, Gemma Ward’s bio is a monolithic scroll that lists every single designer she’s ever modeled for.

Ever.

Clearly, the marketing department at Universal is chock-stocked with Style.com refugees, because, wow.

The New Village People

lily noot.jpgLily Donaldson has the new Dolce + Gabbana campaign, and also a new home:

She just bought an apartment for about $2,200,000 on Avenue B.

That puts the model just a few streets away from Gemma Ward, who has a place on Third Avenue, but also closer to another working girl:

Lily’s now in the same building as Noot Seear, one of our favorite faces who’s posed for Karl and Calvin, and opened Alexander Wang’s show last year.

The building has a doorman, a view of Tomkins Square Park, and it’s within walking distance from Whole Foods and Trader Joe’s.

Not that we’d ever expect to see Lily Donaldson in either of those two places…

Gemma and SJP Throw Down

As we all know so well by now, SATC: The Movie is finally coming to a theater near every person in America on May 30th.

Naturally, we want to go, but we also remember what it was like trying to find tickets on the day The Devil Wears Prada came out - annoying as hell.

So here’s a fact: there’s another fun flick coming out that day, The Strangers, featuring Gemma Ward as a crazy killer girl.

According to IMDB, her character’s name is Dollface (we couldn’t think of a better name, really), and here’s a little clip of her freaking Liv Tyler out with a knife game.

In other semi-fashion related movie news, Fashionista highly suggests checking out Priceless with Chanel’s newest face, Audrey Tautou, playing at Cinema Village on 12th Street. It’s kind of like a modern day How to Marry a Millionaire, except French and with better clothes. But the best part of the movie experience was when the new Louis Vuitton travel commercial played before the film - the entire packed theater burst into laughter at its end.

Gemma Tries to Murder Liv

The Strangers Exclusive Clip
Serena Van Der Woodsen isn’t the only dangerous beauty out there:

Gemma Ward’s new movie The Strangers might actually come out soon, and MySpace is running this clip of her chasing Liv Tyler through a creepy locked house, wearing a creepy white mask, and carrying a big knife.

The clip reveals nothing about the movie except that Liv Tyler has excellent hair and a powerful scream, but oh well -

If the hype keeps up, maybe next season’s Costume Ball can be all about thrillers and macabre, and then Alexander McQueen can have a field day and Gemma + Liv can host.

I Don’t Care What My Teachers Say, I’m Gonna Be A Supermodel

So, it’s officially 90’s flashback day, and we couldn’t be more excited. And what could be greater than supers backstage?

Here, Yasmin Lebon (yes like Simon from Duran Duran) is a new mommy, Naomi hates wearing clothes, and everyone is wearing swimsuits that would make Rosa Cha blush.

Did we mention this is from House of Style? Oh yeah, and Cindy Crawford is hosting!

Now if only Daria would interview Stam and Gemma at Marc, our lives would be complete.

Lily & Gemma: The Package

gemma and lily.jpg If you spend time on the Paris streets during Fashion Week, you’ll see Lily Donaldson and Gemma Ward hooked together soon enough. They leave shows together; they smoke cigarettes together; they party together; they eat together.

Well, you know…

Now it seems casting directors have caught onto the luminous, luxurious duo, and they’re wielding them like fashion dynamite.

First up, see Lily and Gemma sharing one side of a Dolce & Gabbana ad in magazines this spring. The other side of the page goes to Jessica Stam, also blonde, also explosively pretty, and also an IMG model (Lily switched over from Marilyn last year; starting next week, IMG will handle all of her bookings worldwide).

Next, dream for Lily and Gemma on the latest cover of iD magazine. Both have graced the cover before, but this is the first time they’re paired together.

We hope they interview each other for the main story, but we’ll just have to see…

Celine Gets a New President

Gemma Ward for Celine America’s still in the midst of the Primaries, but in Europe, a fashion label has already elected its next leader:

This morning, Celine announced that Simona Zurki would helm the label’s business dealings, after working as the VP at Miu Miu and the Prada Group.

The move is neat because Celine’s latest designer, Ivana Omazic, also came from the Prada Group, where she designed a big chunk of the Prada sport label after being recruited from Romeo Gigli and Jil Sander (also a Prada company).

We’re not sure what kind of changes Celine’s new head will bring, except (predictably) a bigger accessories line, but we hope one thing stays the same:

Opening their upcoming runway show with Gemma Ward, just like they did in February!
