Armani Drinks the Koolaid

megan fox wonderland armani .jpgWe still don’t really understand Megan Fox.

We know she pouts a lot, breaks up with Brian Austin Greene a lot and takes off her clothes a lot. This news falls into the last category - she’s been named the new face of Armani Underwear.

For some reason, amid swirling retirement rumors and old age, Giorgio’s really into pushing his underwear. Last season brought naked Beckhams on every corner and come January, we’re really looking forward to seeing Cristiano Ronaldo’s fifteen foot tall torso on our way to work each and every morning.

Fox will be his girly counterpart, WWD reports that Mert & Marcus shot the actress this past weekend in LA. Unfortunately, not even they could get an image, the campaign doesn’t launch until January. But Google image Megan Fox and you’ll get a pretty good idea of how she likes to pose in her undies.

UPDATE: According to the most recent press release, she’s also the face of Armani Jeans. So she does get to put clothes on, too.

Armani Flambé

armani dada kitchens.jpgGiorgio Armani, he who promised to better “edit” the selection of items bearing his name, is partnering with the Molteni Group to produce and distribute kitchens under the name Armani/Dada.

The brand is defined by the words “design, comfort, elegance and functionality” though all we can think about is what would happen if Marcel Duchamp got his hands on an Armani gown.

As for the kitchens themselves, a version of The Bridge model already exists in the Armani/Casa Residents in Dubai. Giorgio himself is “delighted” that “prestigious homes” the world over will finally have the chic Italian counters they deserve.

Wonder which lucky girl gets to lean against the stove for Armani’s SS09 ads?

Fashion Is Fun

Become a Fashion Designer in Your Second Life

SECONDLIFE.jpgDon’t ask why, but I recently had to create an avatar - a character/person (for those not in the virtual gaming world) - in Second Life. Then, after some minor Googling, I entered this vast world of virtual fashion - think people creating full clothing lines, garnering major “celebrity” (in the meta way) attention, and actually making money (in the real, cold hard cash way) off of it.

If you’ve never heard of dresses from Simone!, lingerie from Insolence, or stilettos from Shiny Things, it’s ok, neither had we. Not only are these virtual designers getting a virtual (but still real) audience, but some big name, real designers are too - Armani has his own virtual boutique, and Jean-Paul Gaultier used the virtual world as a platform for launching his “Fleur du Mâle” fragrance through a VIP event that gave invitees access to a new Second Life area.

We even found Second Style Fashionista (we’re so happy to get a mention in the virtual world), where a woman has been wandering “all over the grid” - Second Life speak for looking all over the place - in search of a wedding dress!

If all this seems too fake to be real, you might remember that story about a real-life couple divorcing over Second Life. So just remember - if you’re actually into this, and you think there aren’t any real-life consequences to donning a puce, sequined tube dress in your Second Life, think again.

Armani, for Josh, for Rain Man, for Laughs

josh for armani diamonds.jpgWe couldn’t stop laughing at the Josh Hartnett-does-Rain-Man-in-the-West-End posters plastered all over the tube in London.

Loved him in The Virgin Suicides, and he is super cute, but Rain Man? Really?

So imagine how giggly we got when we read that Giorgio Armani’s personally given the actor two made-to-measure suits for the run of the show. The announcement comes the day after we saw Hartnett’s commercial for Armani’s Diamonds for Men cologne, which also kind of cracked us up. Is Hartnett the male Beyonce?

The designer says, “I have long admired Josh Hartnett, who represents one of the most talented actors of his generation.”

Vogue UK says the suits will “doubtlessly help the actor feel a little more at ease should stage fright strike.”

Um, ok.

I Met Giorgio Armani and All I Got Was This Stupid T-shirt

armani pic.jpgArmani’s talk at FIT is already over, and here are the only Giorgio highlights, other than the free shirts (at left) handed out at the end -

“You live in a city where you can practically eat fashion.”

“Not everything that is new is beautiful.”

“Make sure the clothes you design are wearable, no third arms or third legs.”

“I just fell into fashion by chance.”

“What I’ve done up until now is work to improve the way men and women look.”

Do you think he designed this t-shirt to make us look better?

“Giorgio Armani at FIT, Right Now.”

Armani More proof that we’re the fashion Gossip Girl:

Random FIT students keep sending us camera phone photos of celebrities.

At left is our latest acquisition, a photo of Giorgio Armani sitting on an FIT panel on Seventh Avenue, taken about fifteen minutes ago.

Superintern Brett is on the case, and he’ll be back with a full report later.

In the meantime, let’s discuss whether Mr. Armani’s super power is a Kriptonic orange glow also known as perma-tan…

Celebrity Breakup: Agyness Deyn + Christopher Bailey

agyness-deyn.jpg To: Natalie@fashionista.com

From: EnglishRose@fashion.co.uk

FACT:

Agyness Deyn will not be in the Burberry campaign next season.

Trust this.

We do trust it, but that leaves a bigger question:

Last week, Agyness said she wouldn’t be attending the ball because of a European fashion shoot - which we find suspect since everyone in the industry will in fact be at the Met tonight. Maybe she’s not going because Christopher Bailey’s taking Lily Donaldson? Or because Gareth Pugh’s Batman Goes on LSD outfits are being worn by someone else? Couldn’t she have sat at the Armani table with Katie Grand, since she is one of his faces?

Other Met Ball news?

Audrey Tatou’s confirmed to wear Chanel tonight which makes perfect sense after this morning’s announcement that she’s the new face of Chanel No. 5.

Enough anticipation already - can it please be 8?!

armaniskates.jpgGiorgio Armani makes roller skates now.

1. If any designer’s making roller skates - shouldn’t it be Heatherette?

2. That new business plan - the one where he refrains from sticking his name and logo on everything in order to re-establish himself as a luxury instead of mass market brand - was introduced less than six months ago. So has it not started yet or did they just ditch the idea?

3. Why don’t they come collaged with pictures of David Beckham rocking his Armani briefs?

4. Does Giorgio himself roller skate through the streets of Milan? Because we would LOVE to see that.

5. Who, exactly, is the target consumer for this $425 product? We’re dying to know.

Shopping

Explain: Men’s Beauty Products

Clinique for men.jpgTuesday’s launch of Armani’s first beauty line for men has us thinking - who buys this stuff?

It’s been our experience (ahem), that men tend to just borrow their girlfriends’ products, often times a surreptitious act while in the shower.

But we keep reading about beauty lines intended specifically for men, especially by non-drugstore companies.

Clinique, Frederic Fekkai and Bliss are just a few beauty brands with products intended specifically “for men.” But we’ve never known any guys to actually buy themselves men’s beauty products. In fact, when we have seen guys buy skin care/hair stuff, we’ve seen them in Duane Reade, buying gender neutral options like Neutrogena.

We don’t know if this is an embarrassment of doing something “girly,” or if men’s products are sort of pointless, as if men’s skin and hair is really so much different from women’s, for whom most beauty products are made.

Do you buy men’s beauty products, either for yourself, or for a boyfriend? Or does it strike you as the same stuff but in darker packaging?

David Beckham Brings Designer Underwear to the U.S.

david b.jpgThere’s been a lot of talk over David Beckham bringing soccer to mainstream America. We don’t know (or care?) if he can pull it off, but now he’s bringing us something we actually do care about.

The soccer legend will star as the new global face for Emporio Armani Underwear- which will be available in the U.S. for the first time starting in February.

This isn’t the only fashion occasion the two have met over- Armani designed a custom wardrobe for the English national team back in 2002, working with Beckham on the designs. The two have been friends ever since, and Armani has even spilled to the press what he believes Beckham’s true reasons for moving to the U.S. were- not the $250 million contract with LA The Galaxy, but the chance to audition for parts in Hollywood.

We have the feeling this is just the beginning of seeing Beckham’s face (and abs) all over billboards and magazine pages beginning next month.

Could David Beckham be fashion’s next big British import?

Too Much of a Good Thing?

stella target.jpg
It seems like every week, we read about a new Stella McCartney collaboration: Stella and LeSportsac, Stella and Bendon, Stella and Target.

Today, it’s a small capsule collection for Notify Denim. All profits go to Marine Connection, a UK organization that provides aid to the world’s oceans and sea life.

As can be expected from the designer, the move champions a great cause. But how many projects can she take on before something suffers?

Yesterday, Giorgio Armani addressed a similar issue within his own company. He vowed to “fine-tune the organization behind the company,” after allowing his name to be used on Vespas, sports gear, and even creepy Second Life characters.

The Italian legend admitted to offering, “too many choices,” promising to better “edit” the products bearing his name.

Armani’s been a commercially successful designer, with multiple lines and licensing deals, for 50 years. Focusing on exclusivity is a major business shift and one we think will serve him well.

It’s great to make high fashion accessible to the masses, but there’s a line between accessibility and oversaturation.

How many lines can bear Stella’s name before people don’t take her seriously anymore? We love the luxury clothes Stella sends down her own runway. But we think a little focus might be in order.

Nothing kills good momentum like repetition.

Armani, The Phone

armani phone.jpg
Giorgio Armani already helped design a Vespa, and now he’s getting his own cell.

Samsung will launch an Armani mobile this October in Europe and the States, with a sleek design true to Armani’s brand vision.

The move comes after Prada paired with LG and Diane Von Furstenberg did a Sidekick, but the new gadget’s real competition will probably be the iPhone, which has no fashion connection other than the fact that it’s really cool.

Maybe more interesting?

An Armani Exchange phone already launched last October in parts of Asia, followed by a Calvin Klein phone later in the month.

Will we get a CK one here, too?

Magazines

Dunst vs. Stiles; ELLE vs. Glamour!

kirsten jacket.jpgjulia.jpg

Kirsten Dunst and Julia Stiles were vaguely interchangeable in the ’90s, but now they’ve gone their separate ways (especially since Kirsten still acts in movies).

Still, our reader (and resident style heroine) JM points out they’re about to move back onto each other’s radars with separate short films, each sponsored by a different fashion magazine.

Julia Stiles already premiered her brief drama, Raving, last month at the Box. Since the movie was produced in part by ELLE, the flick is also up on the magazine’s website, but that hasn’t stopped the Tribeca Film Festival from debuting it again this Sunday. The film stars Zooey Deschanel and Bill Irwin, and the clothes of Giorgio Armani, who basically paid for the whole thing.

Meanwhile, Kirsten Dunst has been using her Spider Man 3 tour to promote a new film she’s making for Glamour’s Reel Moments series. The film is a thriller starring Michelle Williams and it’ll go live on Glamour’s website in August.

Whose film do you want to see?

Get High With Donatella

donatella.jpgGiorgio Armani and Coach have both designed Vespas; Eddie Bauer even got to create the inside of a Jeep.

But Donatella Versace might be the ultimate travel designer now that she’s paired with Agusta Westland to design the insides of private jets.

When we heard the news, we assumed Ms. Versace would gild the whole thing in solid gold, but maybe that was too heavy for a flight craft.

Instead, she’s outfitted her first plane in luxurious black and white fabric.

The decor seems to match her Spring ‘07 collection quite well, and it’s high contrast enough to spot from far away - which you’d need for a VIP landing on the Riviera.

As for those of us without a private plane, we hear Donatella has also designed some very nice beach towels.
