Would You Wear Kitsch?

small_glasses.jpgLittle girls have been wearing charm bracelets for years, but we’ve seen a burst in kitsch jewelry recently. Food, animals, kitchen appliances—just about anything and everything has been put onto a necklace or earring.

It’s a fine line though, between cute kitsch and tacky kitsch, and sometimes we aren’t even sure. For instance, Fred Flare’s PB and J earrings: my favorite food is smiling! And has cherubic cheeks! But how would those look perched next to my actual cheeks? Hmm…

What about Gilbert & George’s glasses necklace? We love the two Brits’ sharp humor, and those are some pretty sleek frames, but even those of us who don’t wear glasses on our faces (because we’re pretty sure that six eyes: funny in theory, idiotic in practice) are a little wary.

Just Call Us Four Eyes

99nwwk[1].jpgIt’s been a long time coming, but we of the weak eyes are finally getting our due.

It started on the runway: Natasha Poly looked sexy with her chignon and frames walking Michael Kors for Fall 08, and then Charles Anastase accented his sweet but sexy Spring 09 collection with black glasses.

Now they’ve gained real momentum. Terry Richardson (whose big frames we love) hilariously chronicled Lily Donaldson’s visit to the eye doctor (a process that ends in the always uncomfortable eye drops that we are all too familiar with) for US Vogue and the new Dolce & Gabbana and D&G ads include shots of bespectacled models.

Apart from advertisements for their actual glasses collections, this is the first we can remember them being used so very prominently in fashion advertisements. And boy, did pictures of Justin in those black frames at the CFDAs get our hearts pumping.

There are some serious fashion idols that rocked frames (Yves Saint Laurent and Iris Apfel come to mind) but now glasses have become a versatile accessory, and even our friends with 20/20 are joining in.

Those of us who suffered through elementary, middle and high school embarrassment eventually coming to self-acceptance and love of our glasses, felt a little bitter at first towards those who just threw on the frames now that it was cool. But ultimately, we feel rather proud that glasses are being embraced.

“You Got it Made With the Guy in Shades”

moscot chris benz glasses.jpgPay attention mass market brands. This is how it’s done.

Moscot, the almost one hundred year old eyeglass shop on the corner of Orchard and Delancey on Manhattan’s lower east side, is inspired by the darling Chris Benz, his retro designs and soft fall colors. But instead of just copying his creativity, they’ve channeled their admiration into these limited edition glasses.

The vintage-y shades come in peacock, cerulean, orchid and golden olive. And they’ve only made 200 of each color - so buy them now.

Wear them with a little summer dress. You’ll look pretty.

Would You Wear Fake Glasses?

Chloe in glasses.jpgAs WWD reported yesterday, there have been a lot of celebrities spotted in glasses as of late.

The first to really set things off was Cate Blanchett, who was photographed wearing thick black frames out to the theatre. Then, we saw Helena Christensen and Daisy Lowe sporting their own pairs, and when we spotted a bespectacled Chloe Sevigny, we knew this was officially a trend.

But how come we’ve never seen any of these ladies in glasses before? Did everyone just decide to ditch the contact lenses all in the same month? We think this could be true for some of them. But we think we’re on to the others’ secret: fake glasses.

We’ve actually known people who wear fake glasses on a daily basis. They say specs make them look smarter, kind of like when we wear wedges under long pants to look taller, or highlights to appear blonde.

We guess this could be just another accessory like any other. But there’s something about their false use that comes off as, dare we say it, poser-ish?

Would you wear fake glasses? And, more importantly, would you cop to it if anyone asked you if they were fake?
