Would You Bare Your Midriff?

baremidriffgraphic.jpgEach day of NYFW presented more and more examples of belly baring for S/S 2010. From Alex Wang and Brian Reyes to Yigal and Charlotte Ronson, and about a dozen other in between, skinny model tummies were everywhere. And this got me quaking in my booties, no doubt.

First, my midsection is not my favorite area of my body on the best of days. But more importantly, I’m not sure that someone like myself, nearing (gasp!) 34 years of age needs to be baring anything even close to my belly, unless I’m in a beach/pool type setting.

Unless, that is, I suddenly become Gwen Stefani overnight.

Sure, they look cool on the models. What doesn’t? But I don’t think I’ve worn a half shirt since the 80s and I’m thinking I never need to again. I’ll leave it to the rock stars and the supermodels.

What about you?

The Brow Makes the Woman

R7Q2Y8P_large[1].jpgGrazia is in a tizzy today over Cheryl Cole’s eyebrow trim job. They compared a recent picture of the British pop singer to a picture from last year, where she has more going on above the eyes, and held up the older picture to be far more appealing. I think Cheryl looks pretty in both pictures, but definitely in different ways.

It’s amazing the difference removing less than an inch of hair can do for a face. My natural eyebrows are very thick. Even my tweezed brows are heavy. I once had them waxed even thinner, and was devastated. I saw a whole different person in the mirror. I underwent a similar transformation to Cheryl’s, and felt I was verging on plastic - like I had lost some part of my personality.

Miley and Elle

miley-cyrus-elle-august-2009-03.jpgIt’s pretty clear that Elle is skewing its cover choices a bit younger lately. While we’re huge Gwen Stefani fans, we weren’t at all psyched about Megan Fox.

And perhaps even less so about Miley Cyrus, here on the August cover. Though at least we can appreciate how incredibly famous she is, whether we like it or not.

The fact that we don’t hate the picture is actually throwing us off, big time. We’ve never seen Miley’s hair and makeup look so subdued. She actually looks rather lovely, don’t you think?

But don’t you worry, she’s still the same girl we love to mock.

Andrea Lieberman to Design

andea lieberman and gwen stefani.jpgIf this morning’s story on Mischa Barton’s new headband range for Stacey Lapidus ranked exceptionally low on your radar, here’s one that might round up your fashion diet a little better:

Andrea Lieberman, the stylist celebrities like Gwen Stefani and Gwyneth Paltrow can thank for their fashion cred, is set to design her own first line, A.L.C.

No word on exactly when the line hits stores, but Andrea says you can expect a line full of a “girl’s favorite things”, and that she considers the $500 mark “investment” territory, unlike just about every other high-end designer of today.

So hooray for an actual fashion person announcing a new line, and for understanding the economy, too.

Fashion Is Fun

Harajuku Girls, Live

harajuku girls ad.jpgGwen Stefani’s been harping on the whole Harajuku look for a while now, and today is no exception.

Mrs. Rossdale’s backup singers will be doing a grand tour of New York’s Bloomingdale’s locations - first, they’ll perform at the 59th St location today at 12:30pm, then again on Friday at noon before they head downtown to the Bloomingdale’s Soho location for another performance at 3pm.

Their mini-concerts are meant to celebrate Harajuku Lovers’ new handbag collection, but this probably has more to do with not getting lost in the Fashion Week shuffle, being that Gwen will only attend as a guest, if that.

It’s not a bad idea - though we would have much preferred a window performance by Siri.

DIY: Super Kawaii!

diythumb.jpgBetween flipping through Fashion Rocks wondering how/why Justin Timberlake got the cover and seeing Rihanna’s face on every other page, I was was overcome by a “fatal attraction to cuteness.”

That cuteness was Siri sporting rubber toys on her head in the most fun fragrance ads since Juicy and Moschino. And the fatal part? Well, my friends (and you guys) might kill me for wearing this in public…

What you’ll need:

- An elastic headband, 2 for $3 at H&M
- Needle, Thread, Scissors
- Rubber ball toys (not sure what to call these, but they were in a clearance bin at Kinko’s and Party City probably has them too.)
- Flair: flowers, sequins, bows, and buttons, to your heart’s content
- Gwen’s Love. Angel. Music. Baby. album (troop of pet backup dancers optional)
- A sense of humor

All you need to do is sew on the balls & other flair. Not that hard.

Dare you to wear it out - take pictures!

Is Heatherette Dunzo?

Heatherette DressIndustry insiders have keenly noted two departures from Heatherette in the past two weeks:

First, technical designer Macky Dugan got his own label and his own studio, and then publicist Lysee Webb took a new job at Paper magazine, running their events and promotions.

Now we hear (from a TV producer, no less) that Traver is trekking out to Los Angeles, leaving Richie in New York to start some new solo projects.

That sort of makes Richie like, the Fergie of glitter t-shirt fashion, but whatever.

If indeed there is a Heatherette diaspora, the big question is, “Who will throw an insane fashion show next season?”

Then we remember Sean Combs and Gwen Stefani both have their own lines in the tents and we feel a little bit better.

But only a little bit…

Gwen’s Inspiration

Gwen Stefani Harajuku Lovers Fragrance.jpgGwen Stefani just revealed her latest fragrance venture with Coty, and it’s pretty deja vu.

The singer’s been obsessed with the Japanese street style known as Harajuku for years now, and her main source of inspiration shows no signs of letting up.

Her fragrance, a collection of four perfumes called Harajuku Lovers, comes in the shape of four little Harajuku girl dolls, and each scent is a bit different from the others. They’re named after her backup dancers, Love, Angel, Music and Baby.

We have to admit, the little doll bottles would be a pretty adorable gift, or just another decoration to add to the dressing table, but we think we’ve pegged Gwen’s other inspiration -

The first of the ads, at left, are a little Louis Vuitton SS ‘07/United Colors ‘now, no?

Tory Burch, Trendoid

tory burch trendoid.jpg Tory Burch has always had an under thread of youth culture humming beneath her hems: Those signature tunics swing a little bit hippie; those insipid ballet flats can be doused with black spray paint to look rather awesome; the MisShapes DJ her Fashion Week parties.

But now it seems her cool aftertaste might be rising more to the surface, at least according to her newest arrivals:

The boatneck Noisetta dress may claim inspiration in maritime fashion, but we’ve seen this shift before: On the Giles Deacon runway, in Gwen Stefani’s Sweet Escape video, and most recently, in the Kate Moss for TopShop collection.

Meanwhile, the blue blazer with piping…

Well, we don’t even need to explain that one.

Maybe this is the time to note that Tory’s two daughters are both college-age; one does studio art and the other interns for Proenza Schouler.

Guess she’s been paying more attention to the girls and their friends than the women who frequent her shop.

Scent Sells

L Stefani perfume.jpgWWD reports that Coty, the beauty monolith known best for celebrity fragrances, is buying a color cosmetics manufacturer as part of a long-term business plan to more than triple its profits.

Coty is number one in the mass-market perfume business, credited with starting the celebrity fragrance boom in America. We can thank Coty for scents such as NY Chic (Olsen Twins,) Lovely (SJP,) Intimately (David and Posh Beckham,) Shania Starlight (Shania Twain) and L (Gwen Stefani.)

And since it’s a bit of a one-trick pony (they sign celebrities to a cute bottle, fill it with Kool-Aid and sell it in department stores), we’re betting this means we’ll see more of the same approach, except with actual makeup.
