Fashion Is Fun

Take It Off

Models take off their clothes all the time, obviously. And the fashion industry is no stranger to the “green” movement. But in this video, the two come together in a totally cute way. And we likey.

Cameron, Hanne Gaby, Heidi, Crystal, et al really couldn’t look more adorable getting down to their skivvies for a good cause, 350.org—which is all about taking action for climate change. Go, girls!

But, we ask, can you name all the pieces they discard?

Would You Wear

Would You Wear a Letterman Jacket?

hanne alex wang letterman jacket.jpgOr we should say, will you break out any of your official high school gear just because the runways tell you to?

Even Alexander Wang, god to the too-cool for school crowd, embraced the iconic American jock in his all-American SS10 collection. He sent Hanne down the runway in a letterman inspired jacket, albeit one with a side zipper, v-neck and flattering waistline. Then in London, though Topshop’s Unique collection was pretty scattered, a good portion of it was sporty, including a letterman-like sweater (but with a number) on Anya Kazakova.

I spent my last day in London wandering through Regents Park and up to Camden Market where almost every rack of vintage featured a handful of jackets I last saw in my high school halls (until these recent runways at least) and they’re just as unflattering now as they were then. Which means of course you’d have to buy an Alex Wang one or get yours, or your boyfriends, taken in.

Worth it?

The Long and Short of It

twang2001812867_p1_v1_m56577569831772253_254x500.jpgOne thing that I spotted on girls all over NY during Fashion Week that I couldn’t wait to get my hands on was the long-sleeved mini dress. I loved that the simple piece was versatile enough to look striking in both daytime street style shots and each evening’s party pics.

Everywhere I turned, this style seemed to pop up. Hanne Gaby Odiele paired hers with a leather jacket and black booties at the Alexander Wang after-party, and Harley Viera-Newton wore a blue velvet Erin Wasson x RVCA dress to Wasson’s show at the tents.

Possibly the greatest thing about this dress is that there are so many affordable versions of it. The T by Alexander Wang style is on Shopbop for $90, and there is also this Velvet option for $86 that comes in three colors.

If we are in for a few more weeks of warm weather, I can’t wait to wear this dress on its own, but I’m sure it will work just as well with tights and a cozy sweater as soon as the temperature drops.

Oscar the Pretty

karlie kloss oscar resort 09.jpgOscar De La Renta showed his resort collection this morning.

On Park Avenue, naturally, in a pretty small, light room with an organ at the end of the runway and a balcony wrapping around. Vogue took up three rows - Andre Leon Talley wore a dusty pink alligator trench, at least two girls rocked Ann Demeulemeester’s brown lace-up sandals, one lounged in Alex Wang’s grey sweatpants and when Anna tried to sit down Bee squealed, “Mom, that’s my seat!” to which Anna laughed and promptly switched to her proper seat beside Grace Coddington.

The first half of the collection - white and navy boucle tweed suits, shifts, newsboy - screamed Chanel, especially when set to French tunes. The fantastical cocktail dresses built from lace, jewels and what looked like a fabric interpretation of chocolate shavings are exactly what we’d wear if we decided to be a lady who lunched for Halloween (if the costume came with a check).

Karlie opened and closed the show while Aminata, Daiane, Kasia, Hanne, Arlenis, Liu and Ubah also walked. I couldn’t help but think of all the nasty comments Oscar’s made regarding the First Lady’s fashion choices and wonder if this was him desperately trying to land in her closet.

Meanwhile, we just heard Vogue has swine flu. Great. My morning just got significantly less glamorous.

First Look: Topshop Unique

TOPSHOP aw09 .JPGLike any good American girl, I’m obsessed with Topshop.

And like any good fashion obsessed girl, I love Katie Grand.

But I have to admit, the Katie Grand styled Topshop Unique show was kind of a mess.

The clothes were very new rave, neon and kind of grungy. Liu Wen, Karlie (walking her first London Fashion Week), Jourdan & co. stomped down the runway in hooded anoraks and massive, blanket-like scarves. There were Balmain-shouldered sweatshirts paired with patchwork leather skirts, ill-fitting tube dresses and a hooded multi-colored sequined jumpsuit to top it all off.

Meanwhile, the accessories rocked, especially the glow stick necklaces and clutches.

Before the show, Hanne Gaby Odiele complained about her fat legs.

During the show, I sat right behind Daisy Lowe, Pixie Geldof and Lydia Hearst (from here on out referred to as the Brit It-Girls). I’d stuffed my face half full of delicious Topshop meringues before someone was kind enough to point out that I’d be in every single paparazzi picture this side of the Atlantic.

Whatever, the meringue was delicious. Wish the clothes were, too.
