Vogue UK stumbled on a very fun(ny) fact recently:

That Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes approached Richard Prince about “a project” they’re working on, and were rejected because Prince said there was “no connection” for him.

So of course, the big question is, what is this project, and could it be a fashion collaboration with the artist a la Louis Vuitton? After all, Katie’s been seen out and about sporting outfits she co-designed with her stylist, Jeanne Yang, (at left) so her designer dreams are already evident, thought it would be curious timing since some people are already calling the time of death for celebrity clothing lines, Heidiwood having died quietly last week. (Though, yes, Katie Holmes and Heidi Montag are two very different types of celebrities, who obviously design two very different types of clothing.)

Or maybe Katie and husband are just trying to commission an artist who happens to be very tied to the fashion world?

Let the guessing game begin.

We know we usually do an eye roll when singing and dancing celebrities announce they’ll be applying their talents to fashion design, but today, not as much.

Rihanna’s revealed that she’ll soon be designing a line of her own, though she gave no further details than that.

The thing is, we think she can actually pull it off. We’ve been fans of Rihanna’s style for quite some time now. Ever since she started showing up at events in young British labels, we’ve been watching to see what she’ll wear next. Not even the Spring ‘08 Balenciaga sandals she recently rewore - gasp! - could deter our admiration. In fact, it might have only made us love her more - we have to give credit to any celebrity brave enough to wear such a seasonal item after the fact, just like normal people.

So given that she knows her fashion abc’s, we’re expecting some great stuff - can’t you totally picture some daring, colorful dresses with a few tough leather pieces thrown into the mix?

I’ve had a long love affair with Hermès. I love the house’s sense of secret luxury; I love the connections with Grace Kelly and Jane Birkin; and I really love the Hermès tie I stole from my dad years ago because I loved the horses on the label.

What I don’t love however, is Heidi Montag’s recent habit of toting Birkins around LA to prove how much she loves “fash-on”. Nor am I much inclined to smile when I see Pharell’s giant purple crocodile travesty. I mean, don’t we have Gucci for these people?

And yet, I still love Hermès despite myself, specifically the ladylike Constance, and anything with a shot of Jackie O. But every time I see some reality TV actress carrying a perfect beacon of elegance, I die a little inside. I think, “Am I really coveting the same stuff as Audrina?”

So the bigger question is, could you wear something that someone you loathed loves? Could you get over seeing say, Britney, walking around in those Roger Vivier flats you’ve drooled over? Or Megan Fox matching her night gowns with that Bottega Veneta knot clutch you’ve been waiting to buy?

And before you come out with “Oh, that’s ridiculous,” just think of how many names are ruined for you because of that bad college roommate or that mean boy on the playground. Sometimes, it’s about the association.

And so, does that translate to what you wear?

Oh no, Oh no! I just watched the E! red carpet special of the SATC premiere, and I saw SJP show off her (ugly) gold Givenchy shoes. Clicking through the Fashion Police on E!’s website, I noticed that Heidi Montag wore the same shoes when she made a fool of herself on Dave Letterman.

What’s worse: SJP and Heidi wearing the same shoes period or SJP wearing the shoes AFTER Heidi has already ruined them? At least SJP had the decency to hide hers under that stunning Nina Ricci gown…
