Model Slash Move On

kate moss topshop tea dress.jpgOur world is full of model slash something iterations.

The original, and most common, would be model slash actress: Lauren Hutton, Cybill Sheppard, Cindy Crawford, Elle MacPherson et al. Then came model slash photographer: Ellen von Unwerth, Helena Christensen, Iekeline Stange, ad nauseam. Now we’ve been blessed with a stash of model slash designers which brings us to our point.

To the pretty faces out there making dresses, please spare us from yet another slew of wannabe vintage floral tea dresses. You know who you are, the Gail Elliots, Milla Jovovichs, Erin Wassons and Kate Mosses of the world.

Miss Moss, your Topshop disasters have reached cringe-worthy status. The ditzy, daffodil covered, forties style, matronly, smocks without a dash of cool belong in the back of musty thrift stores, not on high street racks. And you can throw as many super cool Balmain blazers on top of the floral frocks as you like but you’re still a lamb in sheep’s clothing - especially since we know you ordered eight key pieces from Poltock and Walsh this season. Nary a flower in sight, just edgy leopard prints, sharp shoulders and a heavy dose of sexy.

Come on girls, leave the designing to Alexander McQueen. Model slash model can’t be so bad.

Ed & Helena Get It On

helena ed and dolce.jpgEd Westwick gets very close to Helena Christensen in next month’s Bazaar. This makes us feel:

1) Jealous, so jealous we could cry.

2) Hot, it’s pretty sexy.

3) Excited to be 40, Helena only pops up in front of cameras when she gets to wear lingerie these days.

4) Creepy, she’s old enough to be his mother.

5) Bummed, that we have to wait five more days for a new Gossip Girl and that we won’t even get to watch it because we’ll be at shows.

6) Did we say jealous?

Helena Christensen's Pretty Pictures

helena picture 1 copy.jpgLast night, I stopped by Helena Christensen’s photography exhibition, Far From, Close.

The launch, at Dactyl Foundation featured an incredibly eclectic group of people waiting in a ten minute line for Trader Joe’s wine.

Behati Prinsloo, wearing the same Hayden-Harnett cuff I treasure, waited in line while her boyfriend/jewelry designer Jamie Strachan huddled with Helena - in black feathers - and Jeff Koons.

Michael Stipe held court in the center of the room while Ally Hilfiger, looking more hipster than Hilfiger in buffalo plaid and motorcycle boots, ran around snapping pictures of everyone, including our own Jeremy (more from him later).

Kelly Cutrone slinked through the crowd in head to toe leather pouring Pellegrino and checking on Helena while Rachel Feinstein, not wearing a stitch of Marc, admired the proof sized prints in the entry way.

Looked like a fashion party, sounded like a fashion party - can you spot the recession friendly change?

Helena’s Pretty; She Takes Pretty Photos, Too

helena christensen also takes pretty photos.jpgNot everybody knows that Helena Christensen is actually a pretty good photographer in addition to being a very pretty model. Her work’s appeared in Marie Claire and ELLE, and she’s had several exhibitions here and abroad.

But if you haven’t had the pleasure of taking her handiwork in, we suggest stopping by the Dactyl Foundation Gallery at 64 Grand Street anytime between December 15th and January 10th.

That’s where Helena’s next exhibit takes place, a series of photos she’s titled “Far from, close”. For every work sold, Dactyl will give a child at The Point a camera of his/her very own, and all proceeds will benefit The Point and CPI Chernobyl organization.

But the opening night party will be thrown by People’s Revolution - so don’t come unless you’re ready for potential cameras!

Supermodel Dance Party

A supermodel loving reader sent us this fun video of Stephanie Seymour’s engagement party from 1994.

We haven’t seen this many supers in one place since an Issac runway way back when. Spotted are Naomi, Claudia, Kate, Stephanie, Helena and Christy all living it up on a roof-top terrace.

Highlights:

- Janice Dickinson’s narration and praise of Naomi’s awesomeness.

- Naomi speaking Italian and French sporadically, even though no one else is.

- The stuffed animal that Naomi calls her best friend and her lover, we’re wondering if he’s still around.

- The phrase “vodka…straight up” coming from Kate when asked what she’s drinking.

- Stephanie Seymour’s white lace gloves.

Can we come to the reunion?

Supes, Supersized

In honor of Fall 2008’s return of the supermodel, we found a fun video for everyone to watch over and over again.

Check out the clip if you want to see some majors from the 90’s do what they do best - walk the runway. There’s no talking in this one, so don’t bother with sound - it’s just smiles and trivia.

It begins icy blonde with Nadja, Karen Mulder and Elle, then come Naomi, Christy, Helena Carla Bruni, and then it finishes with Eva Herzigova doing an impersonation of Marilyn Monroe.

We don’t know if we just described the video, or some kind of culinary dish, but here goes…

Would You Wear

Would You Wear Fake Glasses?

Chloe in glasses.jpgAs WWD reported yesterday, there have been a lot of celebrities spotted in glasses as of late.

The first to really set things off was Cate Blanchett, who was photographed wearing thick black frames out to the theatre. Then, we saw Helena Christensen and Daisy Lowe sporting their own pairs, and when we spotted a bespectacled Chloe Sevigny, we knew this was officially a trend.

But how come we’ve never seen any of these ladies in glasses before? Did everyone just decide to ditch the contact lenses all in the same month? We think this could be true for some of them. But we think we’re on to the others’ secret: fake glasses.

We’ve actually known people who wear fake glasses on a daily basis. They say specs make them look smarter, kind of like when we wear wedges under long pants to look taller, or highlights to appear blonde.

We guess this could be just another accessory like any other. But there’s something about their false use that comes off as, dare we say it, poser-ish?

Would you wear fake glasses? And, more importantly, would you cop to it if anyone asked you if they were fake?

Helena Christensen Goes Eco, You’ll Probably Follow

Helena_christensen_music_video.jpgHelena Christensen is one of our favorite faces, so we were thrilled when Monsoon announced her as the new face of their eco fashion range - even though Monsoon is only sold in Great Britain.

Meanwhile, UK chain store New Look unveils its upcoming organic collection, which will be modeled by Fearne Cotton, a London TV presenter.

What does this mean for American girls?

Nothing - yet.

But pop culture trends often trickle from the UK to the US - American Idol, text messaging, and fast fashion are good examples.

So next season, if Selma Blair models a new brand of eco-friendly jeans from Gap… just don’t say we didn’t warn you.
