We love Housing Works not only because you can always find the best stuff there, but because of all the good work they do.
Their sixth annual Fashion for Action charity event is coming up and they just announced the details. The event, which raises money for homeless and low-income New Yorkers living with HIV and AIDS, will be co-chaired by Derek Lam and sponsored by Essence magazine.
The four-day affair kicks off with an opening night benefit at the Rubin Museum of Art and continues with a huge public sample sale at the Housing Works Thrift Shop in Chelsea. Over 150 designers have donated $1 million worth of merchandise to be sold at 50-70 percent off retail prices. Hooray! A bunch of new names have been added to the list this year like Acne, Band of Outsiders, Bottega Veneta, Lanvin, and Karl Lagerfeld.
All the details about how you can take part after the jump!

Next Tuesday, Allure’s fashion director Michael Carl is hosting a party at Housing Works.
It’s part of their editor’s choice series in which the charity, the largest community-based AIDS service organization in the country, asks an editor to cull the best pieces within the store and present them to the public.
Carl’s party, “Last Days of Summer,” also has two co-hosts, Charlotte Ronson and Shoshanna Gruss whose swim collaboration debuted earlier this year. The friends are donating shoes and swimsuits for the event, too.
The party’s free and open to the public from 6 to 9 on August 24th at their Tribeca store on Chambers St. Go early so you’re home in time for the Rachel Zoe Project’s season two premiere and Anna’s Letterman debut.
Housing Works is throwing a party with Robert Verdi tonight.
The TV stylist is working with the NYC charity to raise money for those living with AIDS through an exclusive sale of products from Steven Alan, Richie Rich, John Bartlett, Jonathan Adler and more.
While the VIP hour is from 8-9, the event opens to the public from 9-10 and will be full of brand new merchandise from all the designers, not to mention food and drinks, at their Chelsea location: 143 West 17th St.
And if a good cause, fun designers and free food aren’t enough for you - we’d place a pretty high bet that Simon Doonan‘ll be around.
Housing Works must be making a killing on their fashion related auctions.
Just a month after their Marc hosted auction and one week post-vintage YSL blowout, they’ve announced a major Steven Alan sale.
The designer’s donated one thousand pieces of his own line, as well as the other brands he sells in his Manhattan store including Sea, Lulu and Willa, to the New York City charity whose profits go toward housing the homeless. There will be sweaters, coats, dresses, shirts and shorts for men and women - all priced at 70% below retail.
The sale starts, and probably ends, on Saturday December 27 at 11am at their West 17th Street location.
So whether you’re celebrating Christmas a couple of days late, looking for a post-holiday bargain or just a Steven Alan junkie like us, we’d suggest checking it out.
Someone walked into Housing Works - the New York-based thrift store whose profits house AIDS patients across the city - with a bag full of clothes.
And by “bag” we mean almost 500 pieces of vintage Yves Saint Laurent.
So while Christie’s is going to try and sell Monsieur Laurent’s art to the very rich and unaffected, Housing Works is going to sell some vintage YSL to you.
They’re hosting a cocktail party next Thursday December 11th at their 23rd Street store. It’s free and open to the public and while you sip your drink you can do some damage. But not too much damage because the prices are like Marc by Marc - on sale. Evening dresses for $250, suits for $150, a leather skirt for $90.
We won’t guarantee le smoking or safari, but we’ll bet it’s worth stopping by.
Before Marc hosts the Met, he’s hosting an even more important gala.
Well, maybe not if you asked Anna, but if you asked just a handful of homeless people living with AIDS and HIV in New York they’d probably answer that Housing Works’ Fashion for Action auction is infinitely more important.
The opening gala is Thursday November 13th, though the sale goes until the 16th at the thrift store’s Chelsea location. They’ve procured more than a million dollars worth of designer merchandise including Gucci bags and Doo.Ri and DVF dresses and priced it 50 - 70% off.
They’re hoping to raise $500,000 this year so even if you can’t splurge on a $100 ticket to the Marc-hosted benefit, swing by the store for some severely discounted goods - and an even better cause.
