Hallelujah: Is there anything wrong with the fact that only one photographer and one model have been booked for the August issue of French Vogue? Not when Inez & Vinoodh are shooting Daria. {WWD}
Are You Ready: It’s that time of year, when the fashion blogosphere holds its breath in anticipation of Fall ads. So far, Marc Jacobs throws Natasa V out the window and Calvin Klein casts Jourdan Dunn. {TheFashionSpot & Fashionologie}
Mellow Yellow: Have you seen this yellow Margiela clutch Sea of Shoes Mom has? It’s amazing. Also, Sea of Shoes Daughter is designing shoes for Urban Outfitters, but we’re not supposed to know that. {SeaOfShoes}
Givenchy gave WWD a sneak peek of their new campaign and change abounds.
Inez and Vinoodh have shot for Ricardo Tisci for the past nine seasons, but Mert and Marcus did the honors for the AW09 collection. Their spreads - for glasses, bags and clothes - feature Mariacarla (duh), Iris Strubegger (who’s officially everywhere), Leonor Scherrer, Ranya Mordanova and Adriana Lima, who already surprised everyone just by walking in the show in March.
Tisci hailed the changes as steps toward a more realistic brand image, “It’s important to give reality to women.”
But aside from the fact that the above image represents reality to very few women, who wants reality in their luxury fashion ads? We appreciate acknowledgment of the economic times, but when the Givenchys and McQueens actually embrace reality, we’ll be devastated.
Jacquetta Wheeler’s the new Gucci girl.
Sort of, she was the face of Tom Ford Gucci ten years ago, but the British-born, New York-living model’s been in campaigns more Lord & Taylor and Banana Republic these past couple of years. Her most recent high fashion campaign was Ralph Lauren in 2005, but Frida Giannini got swept up in London’s energy while in town to re-open Gucci’s Sloane Street store and wanted a real life English girl for her Fall 09 campaign.
Jacquetta joins the more traditional Gucci girls Natasha Poly and Freja, as well as Raquel Zimmermann who at this point is a given for pretty much every campaign.
Frida really wanted to capture the London spirit so Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin are shooting the campaign in a studio in North London.
Thanks to Leah’s obsessive archiving of magazines and all noteworthy ads, we’re starting a new ongoing conversation here on Fashionista, all about ad campaigns.
First up, Balenciaga. At left, we have a Fall 2000 ad, shot by Inez van Lamsweerde and Vinoodh Matadin. At right, the more familiar Fall 2008, shot by David Sims.
Of note first, obviously, is the use of a celebrity, Charlotte Gainsbourg, instead of models. With Charlotte, come connotations that inevitably affect how we think of the ad - Charlotte is sweet, down to earth, subtle, kind of crunchy. We’re supposed to be struck by her in such a stiff, alien-like pose, her seemingly inhuman shadow meant to scare the hell out of us. In focus is the armor-like severity of the dress, just before our eyes finally fall onto the shoes, accessories having become so much more of a focal point for major houses in recent seasons.
But in Fall 2000, the story was different. The models come with no baggage at all, so we can only really guess what they’re supposed to be telling us, the mystery seeming to lay somewhere between the model’s awareness of the camera, and the bizarreness of a horse on stairs he’d have trouble climbing anyway (assuming they’re ordinary house stairs).
On a side note, doesn’t that dog sweater now seem like the un-ironic predecessor of the Chanel penguin sweater?
Now, your turn.
