“You have to offer something that feels produced, because that’s what you cannot have on Internet. You have to reinforce all the good things magazines are there for and eliminate everything else.” —Fabien Baron to The Daily Beast on what he’s doing at Interview this time around and magazines in general.

“…is SO sick of hearing all the crying and whining from Interview Magazine peep. Half the staff will be working at Cat Fancy Mag in 6 months anyway.” — an Interview employee’s Facebook status last night.

So we haven’t weighed in much about all the drama that’s been going on at Interview this week, with Fabien Baron’s reinstatement as editorial director and the myriad changes that is bringing about.
But late yesterday The Daily got a hold of ousted editorial director Glenn O’Brien. And, wow, did he have a lot to say.
We’ve had some crappy jobs in our day…and some that didn’t end so pleasantly. But saying, on the record that “It’s like a Greek tragedy. Like watching a company going insane, instead of a person” is major for a media vet. And makes us seriously concerned about the state of affairs at their Soho offices.
We love Interview and always have. But it sounds like things are even messier than we thought. Is there any way that this magazine can survive, especially in this economy? In our opinion it doesn’t seem likely.
Blonde Ambition: Sessilee lightens up in Vogue Italia. We rather like it. {FashionGoneRogue}

Pop-up shops are all the rage this past year: Target, Puma, Pam Hogg, et cetera. But what about pop-up shops for other things?
Books and magazines to be exact. LOVE blogged that Angela Hill, who manages book selection at Dover Street and Colette in London, yesterday opened a pop up shop of books at St. Martin’s Lane, with a pretty serious collection of vintage fashion magazines (Interview, Ritz and 19 Magazine among others) and some pretty cool art books. It will be around until late August.
We’re green with envy, of course. It seems that so many our cool archival stores have been forced out of business in NYC. And we miss them so. All the more perfect time for a pop-up. Of course, we will then likely become hermits, hidden away while pouring over old issues of The Face and Vogues of all nationalities. But who says that’s a bad thing?
—AMANDA JEAN BOYLE
Wu’s New Lady: Iris Apfel will serve as inspiration for the designer’s resort show next week at the Greenwich Hotel. Bring on the eyewear, please. {FWD}

“Designers always say, ‘Gray is the new black,” and the next season say, ‘I can’t do one more gray piece.’ Where does it go? How come the loyalty vanishes? Why don’t you love gray every season?” —Stephanie Seymour interviews Alber Elbaz in the new Interview.

“The Italian woman shows herself off, but in the end she’s not so obsessed with sex. The American woman, on the other hand, is obsessed with the idea that she might pick someone up.” —Tommaso Aquilano in Interview.
Ingrid Sischy and Sandra Brandt just got named International Editors of German and Russian Vogues.
The duo’s already been contributing to both Spanish and Italian Vanity Fair since they launched last September, and Ingrid’s been a contributing editor for Vanity Fair US since 1997. The Conde Nast press release says, “Ingrid and Sandy are a unique journalistic team, full of ideas and with strong ties to the worlds of Hollywood, fashion and the arts.”
That dose of Hollywood might be perfect for Vanity Fair but it’s fashion they’ll need to keep up with Aliona Doleteskaya at Russian Vogue. Which we guess explains their much discussed presence and frantic note-taking in almost every front row in Paris.
As for sharing their handful of international jobs, we wonder what would happen if one was sent to German Vogue and one sent to Russian - does splitting them up dilute their genius?
“If I were in a band in sixth grade I would have called it The Banana Republic Club.” —Derek Blasberg, while interviewing Alison Mosshart in the new Interview.
Today is Britney Spears Re-invention Day.
The 90’s pop tart’s launching both her Candie’s campaign and her new world tour which means she’s back to being a girl after being a Rodarte-wearing woman for a moment.
We’re drawing a twisted parallel to Interview - one of our favorite magazines that just can’t make up its mind. Its inner turmoil is awfully public and its readers are awfully confused. When Fabien Baron and Karl Templer took control last summer, they bled fashion into the magazine with a heavy dose of rock n’ roll edge. Kate Moss landed the inaugural cover, Stephanie Seymour was named Fashion Contributor and there were models in Margiela all over the place.
But now, with Baron and Templer out and Paris-based creative team M/M in, they told The Daily they’re going for “model-lite editorials” and a more retro design - not so interested in being on the cutting edge of the fashion world, apparently, which is strange since we’re pretty sure those who inhabit it are the ones who read Interview.
How much can a magazine drastically change its appearance, content and focus before seriously alienating its readers? More importantly, while all the controversy and behind-the-scenes drama has garnered Interview loads of press this past year, at some point, might it not be best to handle the changes and transitions quietly and let readers learn for themselves what is changing, instead of publicly and loudly declaring a new mission every eight months?
“I would gather these scrapped photos from the garbage, put them in an envelope, and organize them later at home. I separated the blonde women, the brunettes, the black women, and the men, too, into long hair, short hair, mustaches…” - Azzedine Alaia, on his childhood job at the police station’s photo ID department (we think he must have been a muse for Amelie), in Interview.
Is the New: In Style & Interview
Stella McCartney’s interviewed Kate Hudson for the January issue of In Style.
Stella asks the actress about the pros and cons of being in a relationship and what it’s like being a single mom - the usual.
But In Style’s Managing Editor told WWD, “Yes, we would certainly pair up celebrities again.”
They think it elicits the most candid interviews which should hold true in this case; the designer and actress are close friends.
But with the exception of Interview (which has been doing this since Andy handed it out on Soho’s corners), it’s like when magazines started ditching models in favor of celebrities. And if this continues like that, well, we can only imagine a magazine written by celebs, starring celebs and about celebs.
And we’d rather not.
